Anyone know how the B&O used its fuel tenders, with what locomotives, and for what? I'm under the impression that units such as the GP30 were connected to them in the manner of GP30-tender-GP30 and used for yard work or locals, but I can't seem to confirm it. I'm aiming to put together a fuel tender consist to piddle around the Sandpatch (or PO&N) with, so I'd appreciate any information.

NW My knowlege of B&O operations is limited so if those more in the know can correct this then I'll stand down. Are you reffering to the B&O fuel tankers in the file library? If so I think you may be mistaken as to their use,IIRC use of fuel tenders in the manner you're describing did not come in to real use until the mid 80's(up until that point diesel fuel was cheap in comparison to gas)and that would have been into the Chessie Systems/CSX era. What those tanks would have been is company fuel transport, this was common to many railroads to have their own fleet of tanks to deliver fuel and other commodities(the CGW had a fleet of tanks color coded to their use)from larger terminals to smaller outposts on the line and the "prototypical" use for these cars would either be in a freight consist or a car or two on a siding at a loco fuel rack etc. So I'd say(unless someone says different)team the "tender" up with whatever locos you want. Yeah, I was referring to the B&O fuel tankers that had been put in recently. It's quite possible that I've got a mistake in my understanding; I've only got three books on the B&O and two of them deal specifically with the National Limited and the Capital Limited.I'm pretty sure that CSX did/does what I was thinking about; I suppose I sort of transposed that operating practice onto a predecessor railroad. At any rate, thanks for clarifying that! CGW practice will be just fine if/until I learn otherwise. Thanks!

NW Glad I could help. It's not just a CGW practice,CGW's practice I reffered to was simply their painting of company service tanks in different colors,AT&SF had a similar method in later years except it was just a colored band around the tank to indicate commodityGary S
