I am new to MSTS.
MSTS on itself works flawlessly.I downloaded some new locos and unzipped them into appropriate trainset dirs. However, I cannot find the locos in MSTS.
I was told I had to do something in Activity Editor.
I tried and tried but apparently I do miss something.
But what ?Sorry for this basic question, but I did an extensive search in " Search " in vain and I don't know where to ask this question elsewhere. Thanks for help ( explanation or reference ).

Hi,You need to build a so called consist.
Better choice is to use ConBuilder. You can download it from the file library. The full version of ConBuilder contains a Help file.Dick van den HovenPlease help newbie installing downloads – image 2

RE: please help newbie installing downloads

Hi Dick,Thanks.
With your help I managed to have the loco appear in MSTS.But then it said the cabin view was missing.
OK, I found I had to use an existing cab view off another map.
Right now things work OK.Hey Kevin, Sorry, don't understand you.
Did I say something stupid ??
Maybe because I am new ?

RE: please help newbie installing downloads

Nothing stupid. It's just that those of us who have had MSTS for a while know that it rarely works "flawlessly." If you've tried to do much out of the ordinary (and all too often, things that should be ordinary), it's really easy to generate lots of error messages, a crash, or machine lockup. I think he was just getting a laugh out of the thought that MSTS works well. Nothing personal toward you - just the usual cynical view of MSTS.Andy

OK, thanks for enlightening me.Yes, as i said I am brand new to MSTS.
I was so happy that things seemed to work.OK, right now I have to realize that flaws will appear to me too.
OK, good to know that it might not be my comp buts just MSTS itself.. Thanks again.

No, sorry, pardon my dry sense of humor. Andy hit the nail on the head. Just remember to be patient when you start dealing with the flaws! Have fun!

RE: please help newbie installing downloads

It sometimes takes my breath away at how unhelpful the responses CAN be on Train Sims forums!!!Having said that, you can get some of the best help available here. However to help you with this particular problem, and to get you "hooked" just like we all are.... Try thishttp://www.uktrainsim.com/index2.php?form_reader=beginner&CUTHERE=ab33a9a45853c09b8ab64518fdcfcd54UKTS is the UK equivalent, and in some respects better than, TrainSim.comIf you stick around you'll soon find that this sim has NO national boundaries. We all have a united enthusiasm for trains.A really excellent site for easy to follow tutorials is http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/There seems to be some sort of "Macho crap" going down on this forum from time to time. It's not tolerated on UKTS's forums so feel free to register for some friendly help this side of the "pond" if you feel you're banging your head against a wall.As you'll probably gather there are a lot of UK fans of US "Railroads" and that's because they're so different from "Railways" here in the UK. We were still using steam right through till the 1960's when most major US companies had invested in Diesel. Check out some of the excellent UK Steam loco's on UKTS and routes that can be purchased on CD for a few dollars. Believe me, some of the best routes around are UK ones. That's not me being nationalistic, it's a matter of fact.Hope you persevere with the tutorials. This is a great sim, a great community and there are just so many people out there being creative and helpful. Ignore the idiots. Welcome aboardGeoff. Geoff Brown

OK Geoff,I feel your links can be very helpful to me.
I bought MSTS just a few days ago ( but had to pay the price, 42.50 Euros, it was in 2002 as I was told ! ).Searching with Google for MSTS I was really overwhelmed by myriads of links and didn't know what to click and what not.I will follow you links and take advantage of those.Thanks.

>U.K. Hi Geoff, please explain the above quoted reference to a dumb American here. What it is called is good old "American teasing or ribbing", something you Brits have always had trouble understanding. But I don't want this post to be a war between the two countries. I just think you have trouble understanging our sense of humor as we do yours. It is different. I have lived in England so I do have some background there. I love the country by the way and most of my ancestors came from there so no, it isn't a war I want to start. I am just trying to explain that what you think is "macho crap" is nothing of the kind. If you can't have a little fun in the forum it makes for a very dull place to be. I am a member of the forum you quoted, by the way, and it is for me a rather boring place to visit on a regular basis. That said it is informative and there are a lot of things that I get from there. We are different. And one must understand that difference when one reads posts from other areas of the world. If you go to a German board (and I do read German) it is very technical and nothing like ours or your boards. The French boards are more open like ours here. I just think you have to understand that we aren't out to get anyone here and no one is Macho as you say. These same people have helped more new people with the game than some of the not so "macho", as you call them, people. One must have a sense of humor, American style, to appreciate what goes on here. Sure, there are moments that aren't particularly nice, but they are rarer than you think and besides, they make it interesting.
We openly tease each other here because we like the person, not because we dislike him. It's an American thing that I just don't think you understand. I just want to clear this up.
The rest of your post was very true. We all love trains, that is why we are here. But please don't put a rubber stamp on our humor and call it something it is not. Let's all be civil and get along. Like I said, I lived in England for a time and would go back in a heartbeat, but our sense of humor and sensibilities are not the same.
Just a fact of life. Anyway, it is good to meet you, even if through this board, Geoff. And I truly mean that. By the way, one of my ancestors was named Andrew Brown and came to this country in 1632. Who knows, we could be related? RangerWestern Maryland Railroad

Good afternoon to Ranger and Geoff,I am so happy I discovered my first flaw in MSTS...
A loco derailed in a tunnel where it could definitely not.OK guys, please no UK-USA dispute since, after some thinking, this newbie can feel the cynical fun of teaser Kevin.
It is because of me being so new to MSTS that I didn't understand the cynism before.
No problem for me, OK ?And Geoff, thanks again in particular for your link to Railpage Australia.
I found I could download exciting locos without any fee at all and even with a > 300Kb/sec bandwidth.
Also I found valuable tutorials there.A last question please : is this free download service of Railpage Australia the rule rather than the exception or vice versa ?
My question arises since at UK TrainSim it seems I have to pay GBP 30 to download something, which is about twice the price I paid for MSTS ( The UK TrainSim's free download time doesn't appear to be granted to me.... ).Since GBP 30 is relatively quite an amount for incidental downloads, I wonder if you guys feel this is yet worth the money.
Please recommend me a bit.
What other valuable free download sites could you advise to me ?Thanks for any responses.Peter van Daalen

RE: please help newbie installing downloads

Hi Peter,Glad you found the links useful. If you check the forums on UKTS someone asked recently if there was a list of links to as many Train Sim sites as possible. If you do a search you should find them.I'll see if I can trace them and post it here for any who are interested.Don't worry about a UK-US row. I checked, and yes my sense of humour is still intact. Actually it was intact when I made the "Macho" reference. We call it bait. Geoff Brown

RE: please help newbie installing downloads

Ranger,I don't want to start the Anglo-American war! We already did that and we won! You called it the war of independence, and we were happy to let you think you'd won. You must be joking if you think we don't understand American Humour! Firstly we've had it rammed down our throats through films and TV since both media became available, and secondly, as you point out it's origins are from the many European settlers (and Afro Caribbean) that form your country. It may surprise you to know that we even appreciate variations in "regional" humour within the USA.That's because we get out more than you guys. What percentage of you have a passport? It may also surprise some readers to know that UK "Award winning" comedy programmes have to be re-made so that a US audience can understand/identify with them. I'm sure that you personally are well aware of the fact that the originals get shown on the public service channels and recently on BBC America.Oh, and by the way.... we invented the wind up, not you. Although of course the humour of the Real (native) Americans is well known.O.K. I can't keep a straight face any longer. Fact is I went to College here in London with a bunch of Americans. You called them draft dodgers. We thought they were sane, sociable, had great senses of humour and, sadly, we shared their pain when we heard their bad news from family members killed or wounded in, or drafted to, Viet Nam. Many stayed and made careers here and many returned home to their families with, I hope, fond memories of London, the UK and us.So you see, and I have to say this, I do know the difference between "Macho Crap" and a joke. We also know where to draw the line. There is a wealth of help and info in TrainSim.coms forums but a lot of dross to wade through (sometimes) to find it. I'll not deny that the same happens on UKTS and I'm sure some of the more "obscure" technical references to UK rail stock must be totally dry to anyone not familiar with the system and it's history. There is however a great deal of humour there, albeit in rather "in" jokes. In case you're wondering I've visited the US three times. Twice to New England and once to Texas. Now if you really want me to start a fight I could compare the two for you.......

I too am new to MSTS.....the best utility I have found is Conbuilder, available in Train-Sims file library.....It makes building a consist (train) way easier than using the activity editor in MSTS. Once you build a consist using the Locomotive you downloaded, it will then appear in the menu of available locos in MSTS.....Have fun with it....I am.

RE: please help newbie installing downloads

Thanks, lateagain, for the reference to the tutorials on the Australian Steam4Me site. I'm also a newbie having some problems with some downloaded activities, but that's not what I want to say here. (I'm taking care of that on other topics.)The Steam4Me tutorials are great, but those seem to be directed mainly at people starting to use the Tools. I'm wondering if there is something even more basic, directed at us newbie users that are just beginning to download and/or experience problems. I'm imagining something that would document in one place the various resources available (utilities such Conbuilder, RouteRiter, etc., as well as discussion forums like this one), maybe some walk-throughs on installing a typical route, activity, engine, and consist, as well as a section about how the game works technically: what the various file extensions mean, how the directories are laid out, and so on. This is stuff I'm picking up as I go along, as you all did, but I'm lazy and would rather learn it by reading about it than "the hard way".- John
