Aug-17-01, 09:43 AM (EST) "Prototypical versus fictional routes..some comments" Okay, I'll admit that at first I was a staunch advocate of 'real' routes. I wanted to run specific livery over trackage common to that livery. Only. But, I've given some serious consideration otherwise. Here's why:
routes like the Port Ogden route have caused me to reevaluate my previously limited scope. I've found that a well constructed fictional route, or a fictional route closely based upon a virtual route is EVERY bit as engaging as running a closely depicted real world route. In other words...I'm having precisely as much fun running something like the Port Ogden as I am running the NEC or Marias. One other plus is that a fictional route can include quite a variety of different endpoints -- coal, lumber, scrap iron, passengers, sugar cane, you-name-it, the artistic liberty allows a variety of options. When I compare it to other simulators too..it's really no different than a fantasy race track on a racing sim...or that remote 'fish-camp' in the Alaska wilderness accessible to an FS2K float plane. So, the bottom line is I've changed my myopic view now to welcome the well done fictional routes, and this is a credit to the authors who do them. It's gonna be fun to watch the Port Ogden evolve....and I'll certainly encourage more routes like it.
Great job to all the route guys!bill

"RE: Prototypical versus fictional routes..some comments" Glad to hear it!Our route is also "prototypical", as we have been forced to use US DEM data for a Canadian location - but I am working with aerial photos of the real area to try my best to mesh the actual track configurations, yard layouts and building landmarks to what "reality" is.So far, it has worked well for us, and we have had continued success and enjoyment during our creation process.Kern Pegg - Route Developer
