...a continuing review of railroad operating rules applicable to MSTS, in the interests of more realistic operation of the simulator. From the BNSF Air Brake and Train Handling Rules for engineers:Rule 104.3 Train Braking:
Rule 104.3.1 Use the automatic brakes as follows:
A. Applying or Releasing Brakes
When applying or reapplying brakes, make brake pipe reductions according to these guidelines:
1. Make an initial brake pipe reduction as follows:
A. For a fully charged system (i.e., BP=90 for freight), reduce the brake pipe at least 6 psi. (comment: in a well designed MSTS engine, you usually get 6 psi if you tap the brake key), or
B. For an uncharged system (i.e., BP not back to 90), reduce the brake pipe 5 psi BELOW THE PREVIOUS REDUCTION (emphasis added).
2. Use split reductions for planned slowdowns and stops. Make an initial reduction of 6 to 8 psi followed by additional reductions in 2 to 3 psi increments spaced 30 seconds apart.
3. Limit brake rductions as follows:
A. For light grade territory, limit the effective brake pipe reduction to 15 psi or less.
B. For heavy or mountain grade territory, limit the effctive brake pipe reduction to 18 psi or less. (comment: this means that if you can't hold he train at BP=72 or higher, stop the train. Try again if you wish, but stay below the speed limit (-5 mph or more) this time.)
B. Unintentional Brake Release: If an unintentional brake release occurs (i.e., you press the wrong key) while the brakes are applied, increase the brake pipe reduction at least 5 psi below the last effective brake pipe reduction.fwbryan
