LAST EDITED ON Aug-16-01 AT 06:09 PM (EST)I've seen several references on various download sites to alias files and how they save space, etc.Would someone post an overview of how they function and how to use them? Many thanks in advance.Mark Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-16-01, 06:32 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Alias Files?" Most locomotives are created based on an earlier locomotive. To do this, you copy over all the cabview and sound files from that previous locomotive into the folder for the new locomotive. That means you end up with two identical copies of all the can and sounds files. These files are pretty big so do this often enough and you take up some significant disk space. The idea of alias files is that instead of copying all these files you design your new locomotive to just point to the original files in their original folder. This works well when dealing with the default locomotives since they should always be in a set, known location. This technique can be retrofitted to locomotives you already have too. It's just a matter of understand the one basic technique involved, which requires some kind of odd looking versions of the path to the necessary folder.

Aug-16-01, 06:59 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Alias Files?" ALIASINGThe jury is still out in my mind on the subject. I have tried the various downloads with the alias and have experienced strange occurances, most common is being stuck in a sound loop. Also seeming violent HD loadings of the ram, even having end-it-all didn't seem to help.I believe the way the alias code is written has something to do with this. The BN Gp15 by Dekosoft Design is the only one that seems to work properly for me. It has a "simple" and different code written. This coming week end I was planning on doing an experiment, using the GP15 alias on various engines to see how it performs as a whole in the Sim.Chuck Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-16-01, 07:20 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Alias Files?" Nels explained how they work and I use them all with great success. To use them you just copy the cab and sound folders from the alias folder that is associated with the engine you are adding instead of from the default engine. You end up using 450k of HD space instead of 15mb for each engine.Ken Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
