Hey ATSF fans, I need your help. Back in the day (circa 1975) the ATSF had unit coal trains that ran to the Kaiser steel mill in Fontana CA. Those hoppers were black or very dark blue with one end painted yellow with the cross herald. Looking from the side of the car it was about 4/5ths black and 1/5 yellow. Does anyone have a photo of one of these cars or know where I can git one? Thanks!

This should be what you are looking for. Unfortunately they are black + white. These come out of the great book "Santa Fe Heritage", by Stephen & Cinthia Priest (pages 176 and 177). Here is an excerpt detailing the cars, "The Ga-152 class of hoppers was the only set of rotary dumped cars purchased by the ATSF. The raised rib configuration made the application of the Circle Cross herald difficult to say the least. The "t" had to be placed on the rib and the black painted from the rib face to the car side. One wonders why the billboard "Santa Fe" was not placed on the side of the cars as well. Other classes of Ga cars carry the Cooper Black "Santa Fe" spelled out between the ribs. The four stylized Circle Cross reflectors were "crowded" onto the center section of the car."Hope this helps. ATSF Coal Hoppers – image 5

RE: ATSF Coal Hoppers

The black and white photo is the beast I've been looking for. I couldn't remember the paint scheme that well since it's been over 20 years since they closed down Kaiser. THANKS guys. Now that I have a unit train, I need to build the steel mill. Fire up the RE, I'm goin in... p.s. Is that thrall hopper in the library?
