RE: Dumb question, but.........

You can't use feet/inches in Train Sim. All 3D modeling is supposed to be done in meters, therefore that's what the games are written to support.
Its not that hard to learn, and you've claimed on here several times you're pretty smart.

Claims aren't worth much if you don't back them up with actions. Good luck with whatever you're doing...Tim Frost

You talking about WAG and ENG files? I've specified stuff in inches before, but it's not the default so it's more work to define.3D MODELS need to be in Meters. That's just the way it is.Actually, once you start using the metric system, you start to wonder why we hold onto a non-decimal based system in America.

RE: Dumb question, but.........

Pete,
In simple terms it comes down to dollars and cents. Just think of any product made in the United States, lets say washing machines. Every bolt and nut is an American thread. Change them all to metric today and they won't work on your machine you bought yesterday. If you are a appliance store, now you have to stock both American standard and Metric. In this day of cost cutting and down sizing, who is going to spend more money on double parts. No one wants to spend more money on re-tooling. I'm not sure of the current cost if we all were to switch over night, but the last time I heard it was in the billions. By the way, what's 4 feet 8 1/2 inches in metric? Take care,
Rich S.

If everyone keeps griping and moaning and talking about how hard it will be to change, yes, we will never change...Think it's something PC developers think about? NO! Imagine if concern for backeward compatability meant we never move away from ST502 drives because we were afraid to move forward? Or 30 Pin SIMM Memory. The best approach is to use BOTH for awhile and then it's easier to migrate. No one seems to have a problem making documents and signs in both spanish and english. And we all know that Americans will be speaking only spanish soon.
What's 4 feet 8 1/2 inches in metric? The distance between 2 important items. The same in the US as it is in Great Britain, but not globally... Pete Willard

I did wish him good luck, my post wasn't entirely in bad taste.Besides, there's no need for a lot of the things many people say here. Also, four feet eight and one half inches in metric is one thousand four hundred and thirty-five millimeters, one hundred forty three point five centimeters, or one point four three five meters.56.5in, 4ft 8.5in = 1435mm, 143.5cm, 1.435mTim Frost

RE: Dumb question, but.........

A bit of short history here:Why do we use feet and inches? Because 12 is divisible by 2,3,4 and 6. 10 is only divisible by 2 and 5. I believe the yard came from the distance between Roman chariot wheels, but that may be incorrect. The US has been using decimal for years with their currency, so why the reluctance to change everything else is unclear. The UK used pounds shillings and pence for years (12 pence makes a shilling, 20 shillings in a pound, plus things like farthings, florins, halfcrowns, crowns, 10 bob notes, guineas (21 shillings, don't ask!)), and anybody who was brought up on that, knows the problems involved. Computers run in binary (base2), and consequently hexadecimal (base 16), so that all characters can be represented in 8 digit code (plus a check bit).Base ten is natural, because we have ten digits on our hands, which is where counting started. Base 12 is more logical and possibly has more potential, but duodecimal died a death some years ago.A piece of trivia. An ell measurement is 45 inches long! LOL!David
