Aug-16-01, 01:51 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Chicago - L version 0.6a WHAT DO YOU THINK??" I really like your route which is quite brilliant and I spend most of the time on it when using MSTS - albeit with british steam trains or the empire express charging around it.
The skyscraper area which has appeared recently is superb but if you are looking for improvements please can you finish off the sort of circle route which I have found as my engines hang when half way round and won't progress forward! Could you also please block off those gaps as there has been much death and destruction when the poor trains drop off the end. There is also a strange area at the top of a hill with tracks all over the place. It would make an excellent sort of fiddle yard where one could turn the trains? I use it to move the steam engines around their train but the points and trackwork seem to be corrupted?Incidentally when there is an accident did you know that the trains sort of sink as though they were at sea!Again my thanks and appreciation for giving me hours of enjoymentKind RegardsPS Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-16-01, 03:01 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Chicago - L version 0.6a WHAT DO YOU THINK??" The loop:
There are two possibilities for the train not making it around the loop.
The first is that the cars in the train being too long and coupled too close together to navigate the tight curves. That's why I use the srs 2000, even though the KIHA 31 is shorter, the 2000 will take the curves better. So basically the train would be grinding to a halt because it's stuck in the curve.
The second is if you flipped the switches on the loop so that a continuous circuit track was formed. If so, MSTS does not support the continuous circuit, and will therefore lock the SIM.The tracks North of the 'L' tracks along the part of the Green line west of Laramie are to represent the C&NW tracks. They basically run a mile or so and dead end. They are not associated with the 'L' in any respect other than the fact they run parallel on the same embankment. That's why they are only on the sim for the mile, as the real tracks which are UP now, run much farther than that.I hoped that answered your inquiry. Aug-17-01, 06:17 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Chicago - L version 0.6a WHAT DO YOU THINK??" I really like this route effort a great deal and encourage the author to continue. I realize it is a 'work in progress' so I'm not going to be overly critical, in fact, consider this 'constructive dialogue'. I'm questioning the height above average terrain that the area the tracks run on in the route. They seem extraordinarily high and the Cermak Chinatown area borders on 'hilly' terrain. Now I recognize some of the heighth is a necessity due to trying to 'layer' the terrain so the subway sections will appear to be underground, but it'd be nice to see the very low areas then raised up to be more precisely the way they really are. In reality the average height really is probably less than 20 feet in most areas. As a kid growing up in Chicago we used the rail embankments as a makeshift sledding hill when it snowed. They weren't long rides! Hopefully as this progresses the surrounding terrain will be more realistic. I'm also hopeful that some of the platforms will be redone so there's not a major leap from platform to train!! But the sim, the editor, and the author is new at this...so I have hope it'll just keep getting better. It's been fun to see how well it's come since version 0.1 in fact.
Keep it up....these are just my thoughts.

Aug-17-01, 08:15 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Chicago - L version 0.6a WHAT DO YOU THINK??" Most of the "hilly" terrain is temporary, and steel structure will eventually replace it. I have the tracks set at 13.2 meters I know that is a bit high, and I know the Cermak - Chinatown station is higher, but I believe that station is higher in real life? Aug-19-01, 05:37 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Chicago - L version 0.6a WHAT DO YOU THINK??" I always get "Train world initialization failed".
Seems that I am the onlyone who has this problem.
Do you have to install MSTS in the default directory? I installed it on my G-disk.
Do you have to check or uncheck any marks?

Aug-19-01, 11:07 AM (EST) 8. "RE: Chicago - L version 0.6a WHAT DO YOU THINK??" For the loop buildings, make sure you have the lastest version. As far as the world init. failed, make sure you ran the runme.bat file from the routes folder. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-19-01, 05:19 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Chicago - L version 0.6a WHAT DO YOU THINK??" Chris,
Installed the latest version Lv 0.6a with no problems. I need to show some of my ignorance about the scenery. You mentioned loop buildings. Is there suppose to be scenery other than the tracks, switches, underground etc. green landscapes. I have not detected any buildings, roads etc. Have I done something wrong on the install.??
Thanks for your help and thanks for dedication to this project.Carl Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-20-01, 10:52 AM (EST) 10. "RE: Chicago - L version 0.6a WHAT DO YOU THINK??" Make sure you run the batch file from the routes directory, if it is run from anywhere else you will not get the desired results, one question I want to ask is what version of windows you all are using, because I have been made aware by jim that batch files don't work in all versions of Windows and the xcopy command on some others, so I'm working on a workaround for that right now, as well as I have layed track for the Blue Line from Logan Square to LaSalle, and have redesigned my method of creating subway stations. Instead of just laying the tunnel track and allowing the platform to partially protrude from it, I have made it an open air platform where you are still in the subway, but you can see the track on the other side, as well as the entire platform. Aug-20-01, 08:40 PM (EST) 13. "RE: Chicago - L version 0.6a WHAT DO YOU THINK??" Chris,
I installed with the bat file in the "main" routes directory as per instructions, not the L1 directroy. I decided to delete and try again with the same results. Installed without a problem and runs fine. Still the only buildings I have are the various stations, no other buildings in site. If I am suppose to see Chicago somewhere something has gone wrong. I am using W98SE on Pentium III 1.0 gig and 384 ram and Geforce 64mb card. Carl Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-20-01, 06:44 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Chicago - L version 0.6a WHAT DO YOU THINK??" I finally installed it and ran the explore last nite. What a nice piece of work. You have a talent for working with barest of tools. Must be a Marine.I like the subways, really cool stuff. I was expecting a railroad route, but you really surprised me with this route.I don't know where I was on the route, but I threw a switch and ended up going to the left and into a subway, a good ways in there was this huge chunk of green earth stinking out of the side of the tunnel. It was blocking my way and I tought I was going to crash, but I went right through it. Funny though it actually made me jump and got my heart up a notch or two, guess I am into it too much. Oh, well, very nice job, keep it coming.Bob Artim

Aug-20-01, 09:36 PM (EST) 14. "RE: Chicago - L version 0.6a WHAT DO YOU THINK??" Sorry to bust in on your thread Chris, but I think I figured out "rails" problem. The buildings downtown are detail level 2 thru six, and I'm assuming rails has the object number slider all the way up with his sys specs so he should see everything unless he's not going all the way downtown. He's probably starting at harlem and lake, and not getting all the way downtown where the buildings are. Start explore route at Clinton. If it was a bad install you'd be getting all kinds of missing shapes and textures error messages. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

You nailed it..guess I just kept taking the long routes and never could have patience to get to where the action really is. Now I see why everyone is so pleased with Chris's work. Got to finally see Chicago. Wanted to go buy to see the Cubs, but I guess tonight would not be a good time since they are getting beat pretty bad..
Thanks again for busting in on the thread. I knew it was something stupid I was doing. Rails on track again. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-21-01, 01:52 PM (EST) 22. "RE: Chicago - L version 0.6a WHAT DO YOU THINK??" The blue areas are new track, the black solid lines are tracks that are already included in the current release (v0.6a), the black dotted are not an option for construction yet. The red lines are the proposed options for further development, and the purple depend on a red to be built. Again, where do you all want me to go next?
