Aug-15-01, 12:22 PM (EST) "Praise for MSUK tech support" I've had lots of problems with disc 2 and my CDRW drive. It always comes out with "unable to read disk is drive F:" but I have been able to much though and get the damn thing installed many times.Last night (with yet another re-install) I had the same trouble, so today I decided to call tech support. For reasons that are my own, I do not like MicroSoft. I rarly buy their products (saying that I do have flightsim 4, 2000, CFS2, TS and Win98) and have never called their support.10 minutes on the phone and he sorted my problem. I'm no computer newbie, and if I'd thought about it, I may have got there myself, but not that fast. So, whoever the nice Scottish chap was, thanks a lot.Ohh, he did say they have had "a fair few calls" about this product, anybody surprised? Aug-15-01, 12:41 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Praise for MSUK tech support" LAST EDITED ON Aug-15-01 AT 12:42 PM (EST)I had the same trouble with my disk two and didn't know it, and I uploaded a route (port ogden & northern) with the installation set up to copy files from directories that wouldn't have those files in a good install. I found some tiny air bubbles in the plastic on disk 2 and took it back and exchanged it. I append the part of the explanation for the PO&N version 1 fiasco that tells how to check here so you won't have to hunt for it in the route designer's forum:Double click on \routes. Right click on each of the original routes, select properties, look at the number of megabytes for each route. For fat32 disks you should have approximately:
Europe1 - 149 megabytes
Europe 2 - 184 megabytes
Japan 1- 139 megabytes
Japan 2 - 169 megabytes
USA 1 - 244 megabytes
USA 2 - 261 megabytesI say approximately because I don't have a fat16 disk to look at, and the size is going to increase by a meg or two depending on how many extra activities you have in it, but if you have a problem like I had it will stick out like a sore thumb - my Europe 2 was 138 megabytes when it should have been 184, and Japan 1 had inherited all the missing OE stuff, plus some orphans from who knows where, making it 331 megabytes when it should have been 139. Most stores have a no return policy on opened software, but they will allow an exchange for a defective disk. My disk number 2 had a couple of small air bubbles in the shiny part.

Aug-15-01, 12:49 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Praise for MSUK tech support" Thanks for the info, sniper! Actually, I have already exchanged mine once. When I first got the game, it would install to 97% then crash and I could not get it to go any further. I took it back, swapped it and it seemed like the second set worked better, but I still have some problems when I try to do a full-reinstall when it comes to disk 2.Maybe we'll get this figured out soon!John D. Aug-15-01, 03:03 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Praise for MSUK tech support" Go into performance settings | File System | CD Rom set the cache size to small and the "optimize access pattern for " to "No read ahead"Go into device manager, get the properties for the CD rom, turn off DMA access. This makes the CD go slowwwwww but it worked first time for me. After just put all the settings back to what they were. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
