Aug-15-01, 10:05 AM (EST) "New Garratt Locomotive" Hi all. After Modeling the Rocket I decided to model a larger loco. Since I live in NSW I have decided to model the
AD-60 class Beyer Garratt (4-8-4 + 4-8-4) locomotive. Here is a picture of it on my Aussie route (also under construction).

It corners quite well. You will find the headout view very interesting around corners.

Aug-15-01, 03:40 PM (EST) 7. "RE: New Garratt Locomotive" That's great! I really liked your Rocket, and when you had photos of this one before, I thought - what a challenge!Speaking of which - people are really clamouring for a Big Boy or challenger - you should give it a try.....people keep requesting it from me, but it's not my thing - like streamlined steam!! Aug-15-01, 04:54 PM (EST) 8. "RE: New Garratt Locomotive" I second Cyrus' request. There is tremendous interest in large US *freight* steam (wouldn't even need to be articulated, but a big loco from the golden age of steam (1940-1950s) like a Birkshire, or a Northern for example.Great job on the Rocket Joseph!Best,

Think there's already a Garrett in msts?

Aug-16-01, 07:32 AM (EST) 12. "RE: New Garratt Locomotive" Just a little update:
The model is complete and textures are nearly complete. Eng and wag files are complete. Still to be done is the cab views which will be done on Sunday night after my visit to Therlmere Railway museum to take photos. I will upload this loco to a few more sites than I did with the Rocket. I have been having upload problems.
Here is another screenshot:
As to taking requests for my next loco... I have a whole list prepared of locos I really want to see in the sim. Sorry.
Regards

Aug-16-01, 09:50 AM (EST) 15. "RE: New Garratt Locomotive" Man, the first pic was already a great appetizer, but the second one really made me HUNGRY!!!!!!!! Joseph, in my view you are already worthy of a praise just for your idea to model a machine as "non-standard" as your Garratt. I'm getting tired of all those Geep repaints, and am longing for fresh meat ...!What were those Aussie Garratt locos mostly used for anyway, freight or passenger service? Were the class 60's standard or broad gauge? And, is somebody planning to make some matching cars for this loco as well?

I assume this engine will use the standard Scotsman. If the download is below 4 Mb, I'll download a copy ASAP.Looking forward to your next release (could you drop us a hint eg. what country)Euston

Aug-18-01, 10:54 AM (EST) 24. "RE: New Garratt Locomotive" The AD-60 class were Freight only locos. Although a couple did pull some enthusiast passenger trains in the 60s or 70s. The garratt is standard guage.Joseph Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-17-01, 02:27 AM (EST) 19. "RE: New Garratt Locomotive" That looks like such great work, can't wait for it. Can I ask you what route you are modeling, I'm a NSW guy and would love some aussie scenery, also I was wondering which trains you were considering modeling, and if they included 3801Adam

Aug-17-01, 07:56 PM (EST) 20. "RE: New Garratt Locomotive" Hi Adam
This is just a freelance route so that I have some Aussie scenery to run my aussie trains on. No particular prototype.
I'm actually in the process of creating 3801 right now and may be released next week.

Aug-18-01, 10:31 AM (EST) 22. "RE: New Garratt Locomotive" Looking very nice!
I know this is not inline with the purists but would it be possible with a version featuring automatic couplers? It is very close in apperance to many Garrats running in southern Africa and those had automatic couplers thus it wouldn't be that for off.

Aug-18-01, 10:50 AM (EST) 23. "RE: New Garratt Locomotive" Actually the NSW AD-60 Garratt had both Chain and auto coupling. I'm not sure how I am going to represent this in the sim though. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-20-01, 06:22 AM (EST) 25. "RE: New Garratt Locomotive" One way to do it is to use transperacy.
Model both buffers and the automatic coupler. Then by setting the alpha layer in the texture you can select either buffers or automatic coupler (or both?).

Aug-20-01, 07:25 AM (EST) 26. "RE: New Garratt Locomotive" Oh no Sorry that is not what I meant.
I meant that the Garratt had both Chain and knuckles on the buffer beam at the same time. So it could be either automatic or chain coupled. I was meaning I was wondering if I can have both in the eng.file . I have found the answer to this and it is yes.
