Aug-15-01, 08:31 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Over all out of 10" 10/10 It runs smoother than FS2000 on the same system. The frame rates are great when there are not many trees (26fps) buth once you hit the trees then it gets playable but a little slower (8-9fps)

Aug-15-01, 12:08 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Over all out of 10" I'd say 8 out of 10.It only drops 2 marks for the bugs, some of which should have been found in the first beta! The game looks great, plays great once you fix some of it's shortcomings, and has great potential. My main fear is that it'll stay version 1. The sim as a whole needs a lot of work to make it "as real as it gets" and I am not sure M$ will develope it enough.I run it on a Athalon 650, 192MB RAM, 32GIG HD, 32x8x4 drive (which TS doesn't like), a Creative GeForce2 Pro 64MB and a Creative PCI512. Aug-15-01, 12:15 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Over all out of 10" 9 from my side. I must admit that no game before TS has captured my attention in an equal manner (for that matter, I have neve even looked into a message forum about any other game before). I do have some rather minor (in my opinion) gripes - maybe a somewhat more extended sound suite (wheel screeching in curves, clacking when running over the rail joints, maybe some creaking as the loco frame/body is put under mechanical stress while in operation), randomized weather as an option (instead of only being able to set a certain weather condition before a run), and better integrated consist and "mission" (activity) editors (i.e. accessible within the game) as well as a "random incidents" mode where all AI traffic, as well as your taskings, are generated randomly. But, especially considering it was the "first try" for our software weenies at Richmond, it is already very good. You do need to have a genuine interest in railroading to be able to like it, though.
About the often quoted bugs, either I'm very, very lucky, or MS/Kuju did put some more effort into the German version, because I have encountered maybe a half dozen program crashes max since I have the game (about a month). Performance-wise, it runs VERY well indeed on my 700 MHz Athlon with 256 megs of PC-100/133 RAM and a Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 Kyro 2 graphics card (on the S&C route I am getting 40 fps-plus in 1024x768x32 VERY frequently). So, in all (though honestly I do not agree with many things MS does) I must give this game a "well done".
Just my two cents...

Aug-15-01, 01:00 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Over all out of 10" 9/10 from me. It's been a hell of a long while that something has absorbed me for so long, and no sign of me tiring yet! It's big bonus is the fact that it is so open for expansion - whether skins or routes or utilities. I've probably spent more time painting stuff for it than running it, apart from Explorer Mode, so the bugs haven't been so evident. It would have got 10 if they had sorted out the sound before release. MSTS is everything I expected (except sound) and more! I'm a total addict. If you are looking for perfection then I suggest you take up a career on the railroads. No computer sim will EVER get that close to reality.1.2 Athlon

Aug-15-01, 02:45 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Over all out of 10" I'd give it about a 4 out of ten for the actual release of Train Simulator. Naw, that might actually be generous. The graphics aren't as good as Combat Flight Simulator 2, the documentation is terrible, the editors are worse than awful, and it has bugs and hitches to boot, including "flying" trains!
That said, the one saving grace for MSTS is the open architecture of the sim. I know that the flight sim community took a mediocre flight sim program (Microsoft Flight Simulator95, 98, 2000, CFS1, CFS2) and have turned it into an absolutely outstanding sim. I have already seen the railroad sim community begin to do the same with MSTS, and the effort is growing daily. With programs like Abacus' Train Sim Design Shop coming out, I think that MSTS will turn into an outstanding train sim, and the best of any by a long shot.
However, it will be largely due to the efforts of the train sim community. Microsoft put out a mediocre program, with a great concept (open architecture.) That concept, and the communities hard work is what will save this program, and make it truly great.

Aug-15-01, 03:50 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Over all out of 10" LAST EDITED ON Aug-15-01 AT 03:56 PM (EST)Why are you making the comparison between a flight sim and a train sim? It's chalk and cheese. The only thing common between the two is the publisher's name.If it wasn't for the extra stuff d/loaded I thought the graphics in CFS2 were pretty basic. Trees are almost non-existent, which for tree-clad islands is a bit of a bummer, and the a/c that came out of the box stood in the shade compared to the skins off the net. Add to that the various bugs..... And this is on top of experience gained with CFS1 plus a whole legacy of other flight sims. Take away 3rd party support and where would CFS2 be now? I agree with what you say as far as that goes. This is a whole new ballgame. I think it's got off to a bloody good start!Amen Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-15-01, 11:15 PM (EST) 13. "RE: Over all out of 10" Hey All,I'd give the sim probably a 9. The absent 10 is from trains "floating" around in the 4th view and the crappy editors.
I still get smooth fps and lots of fun with the skins I have on my crappy system.AMD K62 @380mhz with 3D Now!

Aug-16-01, 01:17 AM (EST) 14. "RE: Over all out of 10" So far I'd hafta give it an 8.5. Only think keeping it from scoring a perfect 10 is the phoneybaloney train-handling characteristics and the other numerous bugs (not to mention the grief and expense I had upgrading my system and THEN getting it to run on it properly!). The score would be WAY LOWER were it not for all you guys efforts in creating all the cool "aftermarket" goodies! I tip my blue-and-white striped engineers cap to you all!Don Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-16-01, 04:37 AM (EST) 15. "RE: Over all out of 10" I'd give it 7.5 out of 10. 2 point drop for no manual and a half point drop because in places the Japanese freeware simulator BVE beats MSTS hands down!!! Frankly, that shouldn't be possible. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Well guys....I'd give it a nine and a half out of ten!It is a good game with fantastic potential and more to boot!!!All the sim guys out there are doing a great job of working out the kinks and making this a wonderful game to be a part of.I have loved trains all my life ..when I was very young my parents would take me to the train station in Rome, Georgia and let me see the F7's come into town. Southern Railroad serves the South...and it did. Some one out there did a great job with the Southern F7 I got off Trainsim.com and I am enjoying the hell out of it!
Keep up the good work!!! A Southern Fan!!! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
