I just upgraded my CPU. From a xp1800 to a xp2400, the fastest chip my mobo will support. Thought I would get a few more fps and I gained a couple. For 80 bucks, it was worth a shot. That started me on the fps chase. Started tweaking my video card, GeForce3 Ti500. I tried the GeForce tweaking utility and PowerStrip. Tried tweaking on my own. Got the side band addressing enabled but that didn't help much. Seemed like the more I tweaked the worse it got. Boot and reboot until I was blue in the face! Ha!The only conclusion I came to is I need a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro!It drove me nuts. Sometimes its best to let things be!Think Santa will bring me one if I ask real nice?Iggy

Well when its a game like trainsim, you can tweak and you can tweak but at some point... it just doesn't get any better. I do recommend that if you've got the money for it, go ahead... you set yourself up nicely for upcoming games. I'm perfectly happy with my P4 1.8, 256DDR and geforce 2. Remember though, its not what the FPS counter says, its what you feel is right.

RE: Chasing a dog's tail

Is your GeForce card AGP 8x compatible? If it is, make sure your motherboard is also 8x compatible and set it up for that. Sorry this is one of those "check what you have" suggestions - I don't recall what XP Processors you have to have in order to run AGP 8x. That also depends a lot on the motherboard you have.

RE: Chasing a dog's tail

You are right. Geforce 3 are not 8x compliant, just 4x.Since I have this nose and ear infection and can't work, I might as well work on getting the fps higher.I tried the 45.23 drivers from Nvidia and they cause system instablity. So I rolled back to the 44.03 drivers. Funny thing is, the 45.23 are WHQL and the 44.03 are not.Only thing I don't like about the 44.03 drivers is that I can't play DVD movies with them but I get great frame rates in MSTS. I might try to reinstall 41.09 drivers. If I remember right, I could play DVDs but the frame rates were awful in MSTS.Oh, well. If its not one thing, its another.
Thanks for the helpNow where did I put those drivers...........Iggy

>motherboard you have. It doesn't really matter if your mobo supports 8X or not. An 8X card should be completely capable of running at whatever the highest AGP rate your mobo supports. It's a little thing called, "backwards compatibility". If 8X GeForce cards aren't capable of doing this, then this is another reason not to buy one.Not to mention that there aren't many applications written that support 8X yet.

RE: Chasing a dog's tail

Derek,I think you will find that all the latest ATI-RADEON and nVidia top cards are AGP x8 ready and also support DirectX-9. AGP x8 only achieved in MOBOs with AGP x8 slots. Do a "Google" for "AGP x8".They had better be ! Just ordered a RADEON 9800 Pro with 256Mb Ram on it. O t t o

RE: Chasing a dog's tail

Well, for what it's worth, I did a little machine upgrading here as well. Went from 1.4 ghz to 2.2 ghz AMD and added a Geforce FX 5600 Ultra w/ 128 meg DDR ram, taking out my Geforce 2 MX. Frame rates have doubled and in some non-heavy sceniced areas tripled. System now is AMD 2.2 ghz, Matsonic AGP 8x motherboard, 512 meg DDR ram and the Geforce FX 5600 Ultra. I'm happy! The machine is dual-boot between 98 and 2000. I get better frame rates in 98 but 2000 is more stable. MSTS editors are a LOT more stable under 2000 !!!!
