When I exit MSTS, the icons are rearranged on the desktop to a random (seemingly) order. Running Win98SE. Any ideas?

RE: MSTS moves icons on desktop

You probably need to right click on the desktop screen, select "arrange icons by" from the popup menu, and unselect "auto arrange".MSTS changes the screen resolution several times, and depending on what your desktop is set at it can do wierd things like that on exit.

RE: MSTS moves icons on desktop

That happened to me occasionally when I was still using my WIN-98SE, running MSTS at an internal Options\Display setting different to the Desktop's. Also not exiting MSTS the normal way, such as after a minor MSTS shutting down problem, can also cause it.What SNIPER suggests is a "Must" if your Desktop uses 800 x 600 and you have to change it to 1024 x 768 to use the MSTS Editors. Was the air BLUE sometimes me forgetting about doing that and having to spend a long time re-arranging all my desktop icons afterwards !!! O t t o

RE: MSTS moves icons on desktop

Thanks for the hints. Auto-arrange is turned off and the resolutions are the same (1024 x 768). Will need to look at the differences between my two computers as my slow on doesn't change and the fast on does.

RE: MSTS moves icons on desktop

Looking into this problem further, it appears to be caused by using profiles under Win98. Don't know why. Still needs more work to find out why.

RE: MSTS moves icons on desktop

Yeah, get rid of 'em. You don't need 'em.
You don't need any desktop icons except the my computer, recycle bin, network neighborhood. And you can drag those behind the taskbar.
You can not only find everything installed on your computer on the Start button, but it is also easily configuable and can be taylored to you personal needs. Most people don't realize the desktop icon concept is a holdover for Apple users and is really a Windows 3.1 way of doing business.

Using a Desktop "Shortcut" reduces the number of Mouse Clicks needed to find and run a frequently used program, not having to move the pointer all over the screen, opening various windows, hence "Shortcut" ! Having too many Icons in the Taskbar distracts when running some programs unless it is being "Hidden".O t t o

RE: MSTS moves icons on desktop

Using desktop icons is a user preference, there is no such thing as 'shouldn`t' or 'should' use them.If you develope a comfort level over time working in this mode, go for it. There is nothing 'evil' about it.Evolving along all the previous versions of windows and mac systems, it is sometimes a lot more productive to continue using the systems in a consistent manner. It is also much easier to alter your approach without the shackles of 25 +/- years continuous exposure.Martyn T. Griffin

RE: MSTS moves icons on desktop

>Most people don't realize the desktop icon concept is a holdover for Apple users and is really a Windows 3.1 way of doing business. It's also a holdover from the Amiga. But programmers were already experimenting with a start menu and docked windows for icons before Commodore went belly up. (That's another story similar to the Enron mess.)There are no icons on my desktop other then the recycle bin. There is no reason for having hundreds of icons cluttering the desktop. I have even eliminated the Internet Explorer and the E-mail icon - I have launch keys for them on the keyboard. Only the 6 most used programs icons sit on the taskbar. My start menu is origanized into folders for games, utilities, applications, etc... It makes for nagavating it much quicker then either scrolling or filling the screen with hundreds of unorganized choices.XP can be set to display up to 10 most recient used apps on the left in the Start Menu. Not all apps will do so. MSTS is one of them although the MSTS editor and tools icon will.SRV Ron

One other very simple little procedure with Win98 is to use the free-ware program WinTidy.exe from Ziff Davis PC Magazine. You set up your icons (if you use any), lock them in with it and you're through. If things get rearranged, it's a simple matter of one click and everything is back the way you had it. Just for information, you can save the same/different setup for any window/resolution configuration and can even have multiple setups if this turns you on. Quite a handy little program with a very small foot-print using little real-estate.RobertR .. ADF-M&RM at http://www.adfrr.com

RE: OT:Show

My e-mail is screwed up since Tuesday. I can receive, but I'm being blocked from sending. Will have to call Charter tomorrow and find out what the problem is.I plan to be at the upcoming Delta Collage show along with the SRV. I will have the Gateway and use my bench setup as last year. I have SV4 on the computer and plan to run it.SRV generally brings all of its needs although they could use some extra chairs. Setup is limited by having available a blank wall for the back of the layout to avoid blocking the hallway. (The location of the vending machines have dictated how far we have to set up from the main area.)SRV Ron

RE: MSTS moves icons on desktop

I bought a program for my C64 called GEOS. Graphic Enviroment Operating System. A precursor to Windows I guess. Used icons for programs instead of all that typing. On the back of the GEOS disk (Double sided 5 1/4" disk) was a program called QLink. My first foray into the internet, in fact I ended up working for them for a bit. Hosting a room.Anyway, I have the same problem with XP pro. Even my wallpaper is shoved up in the corner. Sometimes the refresh rate is changed to a lower setting. MSTS does it once in awhile but the real culprits are my 6 year old's games! It would do it only when Auto arrange was not selected.I am a shortcut junkie. My whole screen is full or was full. I am cutting back because I would like to start using photos on my desktop instead of computer art. Will try that start menu thingy, hmmmmIggy

The other issue here may be memory....I don't know why, but when I'm pushing the envelope using 95, ME, or XP, upon closing a program the desktop icon pictures sometimes change from what they were set to. (e.g. you get a PGN graphic icon for folders, Media player icons on Word documents, etc.) This only happens when I've been using a huge pile of system resources with lots of virtual memory accessing going on. I've always thought that it was a bug relating to low resources. A restart cures the problem, every time. And we all know that MSTS can use a huge pile of system resources.Just my .02 dollar.
