LAST EDITED ON Oct-04-03 AT 11:44 AM (EDT)

I have had this problem on a few route's so far. The first time I saw it was during an activity for Lehigh Valley. The occurance I pictured below is during the "3DTS_TEH2_2-L_BK_BK_1-05 Part 1"
activity in the 3DTrainStuff Tehachapi Pass II route. It makes it awfully difficult to finish the activity when the front half of my train takes the leg of the switch and the back half of my train decides it want's to take the straight path. I am not trying to point any fingers here, but more of trying to find out if this happens to anyone else, and if so, does anyone have any idea why, or how I can prevent this so I can finish the activity. This first pic shows a minor case of this issue
the second pic shows an extreme case.Any info anyone can provide or solutions to prevent or remedy this would be greatly appreciated. NOTE in both grabs the two separated cars are neither uncoupled or derailed. Thanks In Advance,Nick

RE: Anyone know why trains split in half at switches &

I have had that happen to me when I took a siding, and the train was longer than the siding. The last few cars did what yours did, but in my case they took the main while the rest was on the siding (am I making sense?) Anyway the cars all coupled up again and everything was fine. I prevent this by not making trains longer than sidings.

This is do to a bug in the sim. It flips the swithc at BOTH ends of a siding. It is a PITA.Kevin Arceneaux

Nick, question for you, did you stop before going into that siding? Because I did, and I made it through there with no problem.Btw, I'll check with our activity guy about this as well. Best regards,

RE: Anyone know why trains split in half at switches &

I've seen this happen if an AI train is approaching. The dispatcher will throw the switch even though your train is going through it at the time, causing your train to try to go two directions. This doesn't appear to be your situation though.-Jeff

Well, could be worse. When that happens in Trainz your train derails. I realize that that is a serious problem but those screenshots are awfully funny looking. Amazing how in MSTS you can go straight over a switch and have the couplers break, but your train cars can be 20ft apart and seemingly still be attached. What a funky program. Tim Frost

RE: Anyone know why trains split in half at switches &

Not that I got an answer to this problem, just a question out of curiosity. Does the detached rear part of the consist follow the front part as if it were still coupled on to it ?If the detached rear part rolls to a standstill after breaking loose it looks like somebody or something threw that "Rear" switch while the train was still going through it ! If that is possible, the train not having cleared it ?O t t o

>Does the detached rear part of the consist follow the front
>part as if it were still coupled on to it ? If that's the case, there were a few problems reported bakc last time as well, where it happens the same as above, but at the next point(it is not in a siding), the train becomes connected together again. I think it had something to do with X tracks.

Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it is probably too bright to see it.
Anyway, I told you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted 10 seconds!

It is not an xtracks problem, but a problem in the sim itself. I have had this happen on routes with and with out xtracks. I has to do with sidings and where the train is in relation to the "other Switch" If the train id over a switch, and on the curved part and you flip the swith on the other end to go pick up/drop off cars it can set the part not past the switch on the straight. MSTS assumes that since you changed the switch at one end you want it changed at the other end.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: Anyone know why trains split in half at switches &

3DRailHound, I dont remember stopping before running into that siding. I did save game just before crossing under the overpass. I obviously stopped inside the siding to drop my train and back in to pick up the additional power that was waiting for me on the two spur's. I can't remember stopping before entering the siding.Tim Frost, My guess is in MSTS with default rolling stock coupler break values I would have broken a coupler long before this was allowed to happen. The problem there is MSTS has the coupler breaking bug you also mentioned. So everyone creating rolling stock usually increases the strength of the couplers by an astronomical figure. So what happened in this case was I used my
7x SD70M's to pull my train to the point that it would not move forward any further. When I investigate why I was starting to move backward at a high rate of speed when I have 7 SD70M's at notch 8 in forward direction I found a view like the second grab shows of max seperation.OTTODAD, Yes, the sim thinks the two pieces of the train are still very much connected. Even with the coupler break strength's set high. Lets assume they had the strength to not break under this condition. I would think the trucks on the two tank cars in reality would have been twisted to enough of an angle to derail the train long before a view like this could occur.

RE: Anyone know why trains split in half at switches &

You have run into one of the problems in MSTS. When you come into the yard and stop and attempt to uncouple from the train to pick up the Engines,in changing the switches to access the engines, the switches which your player train came through will reset to default. This will attempt to send some of your consist down another track when you move ahead. Instead, continue to the siding you are going into and come back and pick up your engines at the appropriate time in building your consist as stated in your work order. This should solve your problem.

>This should solve your problem. I may be missing something here, I'm not quite sure I understand how dropping my train on the siding... which is what I did... moving past the switch for the spurs the engines are on and reversing in to pick up the extra power is inapropriate or at the wrong time according to the work order. Now I don't claim to be an engineer, nor a railroad employee of any kind, so if there is some sort of protocol for this manuver I am uneducated as to what it is, but I don't remember the work order stating I had to do this a certian way or at a special time. I think I am confused, as I think you are suggesting that I do what I believe I did, but I may be wrong... Are you suggesting I drop my train before entering the siding (like back by the overpass)then go forward to pick up my extra power, and then return to pick up my train to a point before the switch that is now in the wrong position, or are you suggesting something else? I'm curious, as you may have an answer that will help me, but I'm not sure I understand what you are suggesting. Thanks,Nick

RE: Anyone know why trains split in half at switches &

It is a BUG IN THE SIM. I have said it twice above and so have others. When you stop your train over a siding or yard switch and then change the switch at the other end it will reset the switch under the train. This is what causes it.Kevin Arceneaux
