Hi. I have a problem with the sound. When I am outside the locomotive I can barely hear the lead locomotives engine and bell sounds. The sounder is too loud and I hear the other engines louder than the lead engine. I have tried all kinds of fixes to the sound and am wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and what they would have done to fix it. Inside the cab the sound is ok but outside it sounds very "mono" and as if I am listening to the sound through a radio with the exception of the sander. Can any help here?

RE: Lead engine exterior sound problem

This is normal (unfortunately). The external sounds are too quiet and muffled. Try downloading alternative sound files from the File Library and/or use a sound editor to modify the wave files to your liking.

RE: Lead engine exterior sound problem

Have not had that problem here.
One thing to check is the Sound folder for your lead loco. There should be a minimum two .sms files in the folder.(If your sound is aliased to another loco, then you usually ((not always))won't have a Sound folder)
The xxxxeng.sms is the exterior sounds, and xxxxcab.sms is the interior sounds. You will need to open your .eng file with wordpad, then check what your sound line which has the xxxeng.sms file listed shows. It should read exactly like the corresponding file in the sound folder.
The other possibility is the sound might be aliased to a loco that you dont have.I have a few locos in my stable that have the interior and exterior sounds aliased to two different locos.(my own doing)
Start with your .eng file and go from there. They are easy to edit, but back it up first.

RE: Lead engine exterior sound problem

I have had the external sound problem on the lead engine for two months now. I reinstalled and still nothing. Then it dawned on me, my new 5.1 surround sound speakers. Seems MSTS doesn't like my 5.1 setup. I went into the Creative Lancher and switched to a 4 speaker setup and now I have SOUND on the lead engins! Hope that can fix your problem as it was bugging the hell out of me.

RE: Lead engine exterior sound problem

I had a similar problem with my Logitech Z-680 speakers when I installed them. The speakers have several 'effect' modes. Most of my games accept any of the available modes, however MSTS only works correctly in the 'Stereo' or '6.1 Direct' modes. I now set them to the 6.1 mode and the sim sounds great! I even get surround effects this way!
