I recently bought a new computer and am in the process of reinstalling MSTS and copying over all of my old stuff from my old computer. I took a few trains for a drive to test out the frame rate differences between the old and the new. I noticed that for some reason, all of the sounds are there, however the external engines sounds (engine, bell, horn etc....) are substantially quiter than the rest of the sounds (inclsuding other external sounds such as crossing gates). The internal engine sounds are fine.Anyone have any clue what's wrong here? Thanks

RE: Quiet External Engine Sounds

Check in your locomotive sound folders that there are two .sms files.
xxxxcab.sms is for interior sounds and xxxxeng.sms is for exterior sounds. If you do a MSTS uninstall you will usually lose the .sms files that are aliased to the default stuff along with the aliased .cvf files. These must be redone.
Hope this helps
Joe

I'm not sure that this would be the problem. The sounds are still there, just very quiet (almost inaudible). The cab views are also still there. Also, in my above message, I should have said "excluding" sounds like crossing gates. These sounds are at the right volume.Cheers

I have the same problem with certain rolling stock. But what is strange is that others are just right. I have tried increasing the volume in the .sms file.
But this never seems to work. I have noticed this more so with the newly avaliable Surfliner equipment. I can hear everything great, just the horn and bell are bearly audible. And on real Surfliners, the horn and bell are extremely loud. I should add, that this only occurs in the external view. The cab view audio is perfect.

RE: Quiet External Engine Sounds

I'll have to test some more units and see if the problem is common to all of them, so far I have tried three locos all with the same problem:Surfliner F59PHI
NALW Via F40PH
CN SD70 #5600I'll run some more tests to see what I can find out.Dave

The external locomotive engine sounds are too quiet and slightly distorted (muffled). I find this a bit annoying as it is no where near being realistic.I have heard numerous GE locomotives and they sound much different to that in MSTS. MSTS locomotive sounds are supposed to have been based on actual recordings of real locomotives, but somewhere along the way the sounds were distorted. The only fix that I am aware of is to process each external locomotive sound *x.wav in a sound editor and try to increase the volume and alter the tone to your liking.
