Jim, first of all, welcome to the Forum!Sorry your initiation to MSTS is not going smoothly. MSTS has lots of problems as you will discover as you plumb its depths. For many of the problmes there's usually a pat answer. Soem really sharp people (present company excluded) that make up this community and in 99.9% of the cases have seen the problem before and know of a solution. In this case, my first suggestion is to run dxdiag (Start>Run> (then type in "dxdiag)). Check both the sound card and the video card funtions. Sometimes turning off (or lowering)hardware acceleration on the sound card can make a problem like this go away. If that doesn't work, my next suggestion is to uninstall and re-install MSTS and then give it another try. If that doesn't work post again. It would also help us to know the specs on your machine.Best, and once again, welcome to the forum Jim.
Have a look into MSTS "Options".Under the "General" Tab there is an option "Simple Controls". Select it if it is not ticked or vice versa. Try both versions. The "Keyboard" Tab should show you all the Keyboard Keys MSTS will respond to.O t t o
If the sticky keys option of XP is enabled, turn it off. It will interfere with your controlling the train including causing some of the problems you have described.SRV Ron
This problem has reared its ugly head a few times recently on http://www.uktrainsim.com. It's an MSTS bug that only occurs with Win XP. The fix is to turn off the opening MSTS animation. For some reason this fixes the keyboard bug... And helps speed up MSTS loading time also. You can either delete the .avi or .mpeg file (can't remember which and I'm away from my MSTS installation) or as I have done, switch it off in the registry. There is a post in these forums that details both methods. I prefer the registry hack as it's the more elegant, but if you're not happy with editting the registry, removing the file would be much better for you.See: http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID3/19966.html
I'm glad I didn't upgrade from Win ME. I've heard ME's a lousy system, but I've run it for about three years with no re-installs, no lockups, no unusual problems, and coming from a Win NT 4.0 corporate enviroment, it does exactly what it is supposed to. I've been reading nothing but Win XP troubles for the last six months, not a big selling point.

I have windows XP and had no trouble. Is your keyboard installed and plugged in properly? That might be the problem.13 Year old Steam Loco DriverThe Sea View Group
