Does Port Ogden have any refuelling or watering places. I was merrily enjoying myself when I ran out of fuel. I looked in the Activity Editor and couldn't find anything there.

Hee-hee, well, in a word, no. Not that difficult to add fueling points, I know other people have done it, I just never saw the need. Curious as hell, what were you driving and how many hours did you drive continuously to run out of fuel?!

RE: Port Ogden and Northern 6.1

JimYou have no idea how much I enjoy your PO&N. The open-ended activities mean that one just keeps playing, saving, loading and continuing when you have time. Easy to understand why you run out of fuel! I'm using the 0-8-0 #393 which came with the route.I don't think I will be able to install the refuelling points. I am not one who has been able to fathom the intricacies of route building yet. I thought of buying Michael Vone's book, but I live in South Africa. The exchange rate is not all that favourable at the moment. With MSTS 2 on the horizon and the possibility of a complete change in the way routes are designed, I thought I would wait. South Africa was steam country even into the 60's and I wouldn't mind creating a route or two, particularly one on the Cape Peninsula (Cape Town) using DEMs or 1:50000 maps, so who knows maybe in a year or two there'll be a route with Table Mountain looking over it.

RE: Port Ogden and Northern 6.1

Colin You really should try and play with route editor, I was apprehensive at first but just with the help found in route editor alone I was away. Then there are some superb tutorials around, try this site, http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/Route building has taught me so much about this machine in front of me that I really can't recommend having a go enough.
You may even see my route in the library one day soon.

RE: Port Ogden and Northern 6.1

Well, miracle of miracles! I managed to install a refuelling tower (coal), but I'm not sure whether it will work. I don't what the settings should be and I will have to use up some coal first to test it. Many thanks for your help and encouragement guys.Colin

RE: Port Ogden and Northern 6.1

Nah, if he was driving a Dodge Ram he woulda run out of gas in the first 15 minutes.Well, this brings up an interesting point, I never considered this. My attention span is a lot shorter, I rarely go over 4 hours in an activity. I forget who it was, Tim Muir or Steve Thompson, one of them added fueling points to his own PO&N 3 or 4, I never added any since I never ran out of fuel. Guess I need to add some for PO&N7, question is, should I add some as a patch to PO&N6?Port Ogden and Northern 6.1 – image 3It's an idea, give me a chance to test some other things. Anybody want to try this yourself;1. Go to the \Train Simulator\Routes\Portogden6 folder, find and double click on restuffPO&N6.bat.
2. Now when you open the route in the route editor, you'll have "Pickup Objects" added to the object selection menu.
3. After selecting coal tower, diesel pump, or water column, place the white + over the center of the track and left click. Rotate the object to align it, save, and exit.PO&N is a great route to fiddle with the route editor, if you totally trash it just click on ponV6.exe again, and run pon1950F.exe again to apply the update.

Regarding pon1950f.exe, is it the 'super upgrade' to all the activities and what not? I've got pon6upt.zip, but I wasn't exactly sure how to go about the upgrade process---the readme for pon1950f seems to indicate that I can skip the other one--and I didn't want to mess anything up. I got run over earlier today by a mainline freight in the Coal activity, and I'd kind of like to have the invisocar thing to make some noise while I'm puttering around. Thanks for your work!

RE: Port Ogden and Northern 6.1

Hmmm, currently working on PO&N7, so I got things scattered all over hell's half acre here. No, the 1950's pack includes three replacement .con files for the US2chemicar/Invisocar derailing bug, but you still need the update for Invisocar for the regular activities. The update does include the US2chemicar loose consist bug patch from the previous activity patch tho. In order:ponv6.zip - The actual route.pon6updt.zip - Adds invisocar to all AI trains in default activities, replaces all US2chemicar loose consists with the other default tanker, which will couple from either end. Signals between Hawthorne Melody and Armstrong on the AI bypass route that somehow "drifted" were removed and replaced.pon1950f.zip - Is a stand-alone for the Alco RS2 and steam switcher activities, but also contains the patch for the 3 AI consists that might derail near the coalmine. The US2chemicar as the first car behind the engine didn't cause any problems until it was combined with Invisocar, then the combination sometimes snaps the engine off the track. The 1950 pack also includes the repaired signals, since I didn't know if somebody downloading it would even have pon6updt.zip. I had Don Shepley in mind, he ain't interested in playing any activities unless the player engine is a snorting hissing steam engine. So if you install in that order;ponv6.zip
pon6updt.zip
pon1950f.zipEverything should work okay. The only reason to bypass the pon6updt.zip is if you don't play the default activities with that godawful halloween BNSF orange and black GP38, the 0-8-0 steam switcher and Alco RS2 activities will work fine without the pon6updt.zip. Aside from running out of Shlitz if you drive 24 hours, of course!

Thanks for explaining that! Keep up the good work on PO&N 7.0; it's causing me to gradually enjoy switching. Hopefully the last question on this: Do I need to go ahead and install invisocar on its own before I go and install the other two updates? I think the pon6updt readme says it's included, but once again, I wanted to make sure. 'preciate your work.

RE: Port Ogden and Northern 6.1

No. It won't hurt to install Invisocar on its own, but the relevant portions of Invisocar are included with each update. That way you don't need a seperate download, it will work the same way whether you have Invisocar installed or not. When I first started "Project Invisocar", the idea was any activity developer could just include it with his activity pack, but with additional sounds it's grown to the point where it makes more sense to just include the necessary .wag and .sms files for the ones you actually used. Like I said tho, won't hurt either way, if you already have the full version of Invisocar installed it will just overwrite with the exact same files.

OK. I've got everything installed, and I'm puttering away on the activity that got me rammed earlier in the day. I've got to sit down and read closely the information about those batch files, and then I ought to be on my merry way. As unreal as it gets, tee hee.

RE: Port Ogden and Northern 6.1

Gotta pay attention to the "last chance" distant signal!Port Ogden and Northern 6.1 – image 7When you're going thru "the dead zone" between the signal and the base of the switch, HAL9000 (AI dispatcher) won't detect you as being in the block until the back coupler of the lead loco clears the base of the switch. Another KUJU screwup, nothing can be done about it, but as long as you check that last chance distant signal is still green before proceeding you shouldn't have cornfield meets. If it's red, stop and back up to the double head signal, wait for the AI train to pass.V7 should be a lot less confusing, since I'm using isolation signals to cut off the mainlines from the switching districts, so the only signals you'll see other than the dwarfs will actually mean something.Port Ogden and Northern 6.1 – image 8The last chance distant signal is actually a different object, with a red "D" plate on it, so there's no mistaking it for anything else.Port Ogden and Northern 6.1 – image 9Player only goes thru four signals in all at each junction, using the dwarfs eliminates the need for "spacer" signals on the player tracks between junctions. Any red signal on the player tracks will mean stop in V7.Port Ogden and Northern 6.1 – image 10Some junctions will still be confusing, but if the signal is over your head or to the right of the track you're on, it's your signal. Now back to Colin's thing, For V7 I guess I should stick in refueling thingys.Port Ogden and Northern 6.1 – image 11That's what I currently have at Anderson, an engine servicing area with a coal tower and water column behind the engine shed, and a diesel pump in front of it. Probably be more interesting if the services weren't available everywhere, question is, should they all be grouped together?. Or would it be better to have, for example, water available in 77, and if you want coal you gotta go to either Newcastle or Van den Hoven to get it?

Water on Port Ogden

Mr. Sniper, may I presume to make a suggestion? Check out wtrtwr3.zip in our file library. These are what I have been adding to your routes. I think I first saw them on the New Zealand route and in my humble opinion these little water towers are much more scenic than the water colmns that came with MSTS.I remember my first impression of you being; " Hey, this guy is not a steamer, there is no place to get water". It can get used up rather quickly when one is worrying more about keeping the steam up than about conserving fuel.I also load-up the route with 40' cars and just keep driving and saving and I really have never driven to the point of not haveing anything else to shuttle around.

RE: Water on Port Ogden

Hmmm, I dunno. I looked at that one, with the external bracing it might fit in on a southwestern USA narrow gauge route, but I'm looking more for the traditional style USA water towers."my first impression of you being; " Hey, this guy is not a steamer, there is no place to get water"."Hee-hee, well, you're partially right. I couldn't stand the click and drag mouse control interface, so I rigged up my Saitek X-36 joystick/throttle to generate A S D W < > ; ' X, and all the other assorted keyboard controls. Problem with that being serious keyboard lag time, and combined with the graduated self lap running holding when the hell do the brakes actually begin to apply, I just couldn't control the steamers well enough for switching. A little forward reverser, a little regulator, release the brakes, and the second the engine starts creeping toward the cars apply emergency brakes and full reverse, but before the keystrokes get a chance to catch up the damn thing has accelerated to mach 1.6 off the end of the spur. So I did all my switching with diesels.I have Raildriver now, and altho there's still a little lag in the keyboard VS mouse controls, I spent almost a year hacking that 0-8-0's physics to make it controllable enough for switching duty. I still use the automatic fireman tho, I got enough to do just running a steamer without having to fire it too!

RE: Water on Port Ogden

I only used the automatic fireman once thinking I would get some tips on how he did his work by looking at the HUD but to my dismay kicking in auto fireman makes a bunch of revent stats unavailiable. When I do switching with steam I use the keyboard and I use the reverser and throttle and I use low number notches on the reverser and goose the throttle. I have developed a lite touch in accelerating that even seems to show up in my automobile driving these days. My Raildriver is pretty much deisel only for me.I tried one of those Micados recently and the breaking seemed easier to live with but the one I tried had a scoop and no water inlet at the top so I could not refuel. I wonder if those water pan things between the tracks can be added with out ripping up track and screwing up the signaling.I think I saw some nice looking large wooden water towers in the library but I thought they were not pick-up item models.

RE: Port Ogden and Northern 6.1

As a steam loco uses more water than coal, usually, provision for both should only be at places where steam locos are normally based, with water only at other locations. Diesel, a couple of places should be enough for them.

RE: Port Ogden and Northern 6.1

Thanks, that makes sense. Coal near some of the engine sheds in the bigger towns, and water at the passenger stations on the mainline maybe?
