Who do I send the bill for a new keyboard to? Mine's all covered with slobber and drool. That has got the be the most beatuiful locomotive I've seen in a long while. I don't care what route it's being planned for, I know it'll look good going around the loop at Tehachapi.

Stunning, simply stunning. There is no other word for it. It's about time we had more payware steam. My guess is you guys are working with SLM on whatever route that was they were working on. Is it going to include that SP 0-6-0 with the sausage tender? I like that one. Guess I'd better start saving my allowance again. Great work you guys, it makes my day to see another payware developer finally getting into the steam business. It's been a long wait for us steam guys.Grizzly3D Train Stuff: 3DTS throws hat into the US Steam arena – image 10 3D Train Stuff: 3DTS throws hat into the US Steam arena – image 11

Shameless plug here but German Railroads volume 3 is about steam engines in former East Germany. Now I think of it, who else (payware) is using steam engines?Edit: 3Dtrainsstuff UK of course!! Nice Southern Pacific locomotive btw!

I would venture that it is Donner. SP used these on wither Donner ot TP. They were used in other places later as they were displaced.Kevin Arceneaux

Well, if those train number boards mean anything, Train 60 was the south bound West Coast between Sacarmento and LA. So it could be the extension of the TPII and Cajon up the vally all the way to SF. Just a guess mind you.

Excellent detective work there Sharon. However SP only went east and west, and nothing was west of San Francisco. #60 is indeed the eastbound West Coast. I would hope to see (if a new route) the Soledad Canyon Line (L.A. to Palmdale) or better yet Tehachapi backdated to about 1952.Jeff

WOW, looks great. I hope it's for the Donner Pass route. The 2-8-8-4's were originally turned around for that line if I remember correctly. The reason was to give the engine crews a break from the smoke in the many tunnels on the line. Another plus, it was part of the first transcendental railroad. If it is the Donner Pass route, please include Roseville yard, I spent many a happy weekend railfanning there while I was in the Air Force. Do they still have one of the cab forwards in the Sacramento Railroad Museum?Take care,
Rich S.

FWIW, if you turn the engine around and redo the cab, front deck, and fuel lines you'll have a fairly close approximation of WP's 251 class of locomotives. Think about it -- could be a quick way to a 2nd product.Dave NelsonWP track, Oakland-Radum: 90% complete; Radum-Stockton: 5% complete

As a footnote to the above discussion... When the first cabforwards were put into service, a problem developed... when the oil level in the tender dropped a little and the engine was pulling up grade, the oil would no longer flow the length of the engine to the burner in the firebox. The problem was quickly and cleverly solved by internally bracing the oil tank, making it airtight, and pressuring it (about 5psi) which insured a constant oil flow to the burner. This and the oil heater account for all of the plumbing visible on the front of the cab forward's tender.Water was no problem with the feedwater heater cold water pump below the rear deck well below the water tank of the tender. A Nathan non-lifting injector was located on the fireman's side at the base of the cab ladder, again being below the water level in the tender.

RE: 3D Train Stuff: 3DTS throws hat into the US Steam a

At normal temperature Bunker C Crude which almost all SP steam engines used has the consistency of tar and must be heated to flow, it is atomized at the burner using steam. That being said; the time period for the first SP mallets/cabforwards is 1909-1910. At that time steam driven turbo pumps were not even thought of. Feedwater was put into the boiler using steam injectors... these injectors could be either lifting or non-lifting... so there was never a problem getting water to the injectors and into the boiler. Bottom line what worked for water could not be used for oil in a cab forward type of locootive where the oil must flow the length of engine to the firebox burner. There is no problem with a conventional loco as it is a short distance from the oil tank to the burner which is lower than the tank and gravity does the job. This expanation is somewhat oversimplified, but I hope you get the drift.

Yes, this is kinda OT, but the Island Queen of Cincinnati fame (which used bunker C Crude) blew up in Pittsburg because the chief engineer (who didnt' know the fuel was active) decided to weld on the front deck, right over where the fuel was.Needless to say, people around the waterfront district had thought an atomic bomb had gone off! But, had the fuel been in its unheated state, would the boat still have exploded?Just thought I'd share that with y'all. And great lookin' engine by the way!-You can never have too much inner beauty. Nice start to the AC12, from looking at pictures and models u guys still got a lot of modeling left to do on that locomotive with detail items etc. Will there be any 4-6-2's or 4-8-2's to come along with this route? LOL Hopefully the 2-8-8-4 maybe, pretty much a backwards cab forward.Adam
