My name is Matthew Schultz and I remember this site from years ago-just after MSTS was released. I remember that of all the places I found with downloads, this was the best. I used to come to these forums often. I did some .eng file work and created/ uploaded the New HHP mod long ago. There is one thing I remember about this site and that is the pain of logging in. Even in those days we had the "All nodes busy" page. But it was never mush annoyance to me because after pressing f5, enter,f5, enter over and over I could get in in about a minute.Upon my return to this site I was astonished at the amount of work that has been done here. There is soooooo much more now that we never had before. However, I noticed (after having to struggle a bit and re-register as I had no clue even what my old user name was) that the "All nodes busy" page was still there."Fine" I thought, and I understand the reasoning behind this. I proceeded to use my old method of gaining entry to the downloads. After around 10 minutes, I was getting particularly annoyed, and was finally connected. "Yes" I thought and began to brose around and look at the area. I was again astounded at how much growth has been acheived.Something caused me to accedentaly close the browser window then. "Bummer" I said to myself and proceeded to navigate to the login page and attempted to log in again. Time ticks by.......After twenty minutes I quit in disgust.I am amazed at how much this has grown, and yet repelled by the face that dispite the huge growth of the site, the sever space has not grown an inch. I don't see myself comming back here, as this area is not worth over 20 minutes of pressing f5, enter, f5, enter nor is it worth to me the $30 bucks it takes to get first class here. It may become worth that, but at the moment this site is a memory (a good one). Too bad its no longer what I remember it being. So long,Matt

Yep. it isn't like you remember, it has grown and grown. WE understand a lot more of what makes MSTS tick. There is also a lot more stuff to download. The routes, engines, and other things make this site one of the best. It you are too cheap to spend the 30 bucks, or keep trying to use one of the free nodes, then leave. Kevin Arceneaux

$30 is too much to pay and you hate spending the time to get in for free. Dont let the door hit you on the way out. I spent the money to be a mamber and its worth every penny of it. While your asking the impossible why don't you ask for someone to build you a custom route of do a reskin for you or make your favorite engine!

You may have been here long ago but I am new to the forum. I find it worth every penny and then some. How do you think this site got as good as it is. Do you feel the good people who run this can or should do it out of the goodness of their hearts and pocketbooks? If this site as improved so much how can you complain? $30 in todays economy is pocket change. Instead of hitting keys for half an hour you could be downloading. If it's too much to spend, then good luck finding another site that even comes close!

You know you also have to take into conserderation all the people that are using the free nodes myself included. Beside I keep trying 10 times every 5 minutes. Or I just simply wait until I get up in the am. The forums aren't like what they used to be. I stumbled on this site in a search engine search for add-on's when I finally got my copy of Train sim installed n March of 2002. Since then I haven't looked back and am very proud to be one of the oddball members hereRemember even though the signature is still absent I am the SatanTrain. The resident SatanTrain to be exact, but I don't go worshipping Satan every second of my life. I lead and live a pretty normal one with my wife and kids. Oh I was also born and raised in Canada, but call Vermont home nowadays. Like John said, not everyone has the money and it costs alot to even host a server let alone run one.

RE: File Download

This is as good a time as any for a first reply.I have been hanging around here for a couple of months now, and have already taken more from this site than I will ever be able to repay. I have new routs and rolling stock and activities and everything I need, but not as much as I want. This topic has jolted me into plunking my $30 down for a membership as I have been planning to do, but just procrastinating on until now. After signing up a few minutes ago, I logged on to the file area and was amazed at the speed of things. I have been plugging away getting stuff slowly for free, when all it costs is $30 to rip and fly (I have DSL). Even at slow speed, I believe the benefits of membership far outweigh the cost. Thanks to all of you on the forum for all that you contribute to my MSTS experience. By the way. I enjoy both free stuff and payware and have a couple of free routes that I think are incredible. My hat is off to you creative and dedicated people out there.Bob V

RE: File Download

I have been hanging around hear for most of this year, after I was given Train Simulator for a Christmas present. My present situation is one of being unemployed, but not wishing to be so. This imposes tight budgetry constraints on my household, so priorities have to be set, and they have to respect not only my interests and needs, but those of my wife also.Conesquently, I have not plunked down my $30. This is not a matter of being cheap, it's a matter of setting priorities for limited resources. I, therefor, accept the "All nodes busy" notice as one of those things I have to put up with. Sometimes I can get in quickly, sometimes it takes me days to get in (I don't sit there trying repeatedly for 5 or 10 minutes - I just try from time to time while engaged in other online activities). As soon as my circumstances improve a bit, I will be laying out that $30, but until then the watchword is "PATIENCE" (and yes, I did shout that word).I'm sure there are others around who have similar budgetry constraints - whether caused by unemployment, limited pensions, etc. Most of us just accept that we can't have everything we want when we want it, and abide in patience.CheersJohn

RE: File Download

>This is not a matter of being cheap, it's a matter of setting priorities for limited resources.Indeed. I have many other priorities to worry about. I don't have a job, don't have much cash, and am still in school. I do not make enough money to fund all of my interests. Train-sim is not the first (nor is it really high) on my list.I accept the fact that the sever costs money to operate. However, in the time I was gone, I had expected the operation of the server to keep up with the demands. This place isn't entirely fundless. There are adds here, and subscribing members, and don't try to tell me that there are not less subscribing members than there were before or that the add revenue has not increased as the traffic on this site has grown quite heavy (any if the add revenue is still the same I would suggest finding new advertising partners).Mind you the money is understandably not enough to give everybody full access full-time. But how about some innovations. Like a waiting que. Instead of defaulting to the same screen, we could create a que. As long as the person leaves the window open they are placed in a line. They are told what place they are. When someone leaves, the next person in line is given access. There would be no time limit for staying inside, but as it says now, people are constantly going and comming, and if you had a line, the wait would be much less difficult and much more pleasant.I'm not trying to make a firey flaring statement, rather just to suggest an area to consider for improvement.sincerly,Mattps-lego mindstorms rules!

Well...I love this site...and It is worth more than 30 Dollars. I haven't paid for the First Class Memebership....and because of that, I get to see the All Nodes Busy page. this doesn't bother me at all..considering all the great addons! Anyways...if you don't like the busy page, pay the dues! I am in school, and have made 40 dollars Canadian TODAY! Cut Two Lawns, and helped my grandpa Chop and pile wood. Not hard to earn cash...

RE: File Download

I did not have the $30 for the first several months and because I did not I accepted the "Busy Node" situation and was grateful that I was even given an opportunity to have access to so much entertaining and useful stuff.I was finally able to afford the $30 and think that it is a great investment. You would have done well to have made a useful and constructive suggestion as you just did instead of just complaining about the inconvenience you have encountered.Keep in mind that it is MY $30 and the memberships purchased by many many others that make this site viable. I am glad that the management continues to make the contents available to both contributors and those unable to contribute. I am sorry for any inconvenience that you may suffer. I do not begrudge you the bandwidth however, I certainly do not want my bandwidth wasted listening to you or anyone else who is unable to contribute and is ungrateful enough to complain about the quality of the FREE service provided.Rick, President/CEO

Hey, you get what you pay for.I am a paying member. That is one of the first things I did after attempting a couple of downloads. I wanted better access and faster downloads. Why should "they" waste time trying to increase the free nodes? They are there to give you a taste, a free sample. And if you can't afford a membership, a way to stay in touch and keep up with MSTS.If everyone had instant access to the free nodes everytime, no one would pay the 30 bucks to join. Thanks for the chuckle. I needed a good laugh tonight.Iggy

Since you have been gone for a long time, I think you cannot make the statement that the server hasn't been expanded to meet demands. You cannot know this, and therefore are only making an incorrect assumption. Now, did you ask Nels if the server space has been increased? Or did you just assume that since you can't get in just anytime you want, there must not be enough server space? Don't forget what they say about what happens when you assume-you make an a** of u and me. I understand the financial constrant issue. With two teenage daughters at home and living on a preacher's salary, I had to make choices. I happen to have purchased the membership after several months of "free" downloading. TO me, it was worth the sacrifice I had to make to raise this to the priority level of getting done.If you don't choose to pay, then don't complain that you can't get all the freebies you want any time you want them. Be happy that Nels and all those who have spent their time and efforts make this site free and allow any non-member access. Trust me, keeping this server running for all of us is not an easy task. Managing something that is only a hobby takes as much time as getting paid for it. DOn't knock what's free. Accept it and enjoy the toys that are here.
However, if you really can't stand this place, check out this site:
http://www.railserve.com/Computers/MSTS/
They are free, but don't have nearly the selection Train-Sim has.

RE: File Download

I have been moved to register because of this thread,as you can see this IS my first post,I have lurked in the shadows for nearly 2 YEARS downloading this and that and reading the forums.Really just a handful of routes and less than 75 new items of rolling stock.I MYSELF am a fulltime student,WITH A FAMILY! so you can imagine money IS hard for me to come by.I don't mind getting in line behind PAYING customers, yes it has taken me a few days to download a route,I am also on a 56k modem, thank god for get-it-right!! I AM VERY GRATEFUL FOR THE FOLKS that run this website to all ANY free downloading is nothing short of PURE generosity,of a kind that is hard to come by in this day and age.their is an old saying around the rural area I live in and it goes "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" and here is another one"Beggars can't be choosers!" I have no right to complain about the "all nodes are busy page" after all,I am LIKE YOU riding in the blind baggage as an old hobo would say,we have no rights down here hanging onto the truss rods, just be grateful that the powers that be allow us a free ride at all!!I for one am planning one sending in my 30 bucks,so I can get a ticket to ride inside the train for once and to help pay Trainsim.com back for all the joy these add-ons have added to my game!! All I ask of the MEMBERS of trainsim.com is when I finally get a first class membership, will they PLEASE STOP THE TRAIN,or at least slow it down so I can got out from under this boxcar and climb up into the plush interior of the first class seats???This train has been picking up speed and I hate trying to climb over the trucks and axels to get the platform from below!!

Software piracy is stealing, hacking is just as bad, and makes computer usage needlessly complex because some small minded idiot wants to trash someone elses equiptment. Just in case you are not understanding what I am getting at why dont you go away and grow up, learn to be a man then come back when you have something usefull to contribute, instead of needless complaints. Duh!You don't get it do you? We care about innovation, and some of us actually create "what's next" with out lil' old computers. We are always talking about ways we can make MSTS better... and some of actually find ways to make it happen. It's obvious you haven't spent much time here before you engaged in the activity we as a collective group DON'T like. You got it. We don't like TROLLS who whine, whine, whine, complain, complain complain and have sob stories about being too broke to support anyone. Here's a news flash! Most of us don't care to read about money releated complaints when you sound like a GIMME PIG. If MSTS is what you like to do and talk about, put your money where your mouth is, or keep it to yourself.Let us save our sympathy for people who really need it.Complaining about how Nels runs his site is pointless. Concerned that we all jumped on your case when you started to complain? Complain again and see what happens. Apparently our self- appointed troll-police are very alert.

Let's see now - $30 a year comes out to $2.50 per month - less than 10 cents per day for immediate access to all this wonderful content - is there a better bargain anywhere???I could have afforded it cutting lawns for 50 cents with a hand mower back in the 50's...after walking 6 miles to an unheated one room schoolhouse, uphill in both directions....:-p Tim

And I, too, am grateful for the free access, even if it takes a long time sometimes to get in; at other times I get in the first time. As a homemaker with no outside income, and a husband who thinks trains are a waste of time & refuses money for them, I am knitting a sweater for a friend to raise my $30 membership fee. I believe it to be worth every penny, and if you want to acquire free downloads bad enough, you can earn the money. (Even if you have to knit a sweater in mustard yellow). Annabelle

Serve a few years in the US ARmy back when the wimps weren't around, then you learn what REAL bitching is about. What always gets me is these people would gladly spend more than thirty bucks for a pair of jeans. Who are they trying to kid? Or are they so used to whining and getting their way they expect someone to pay the price of admission for them? Do what Annabelle is doing: If you can't afford something, and want it, go out and work to get it.
I am encouraged to see there is still someone around who understands this. I'll close by telling this person what we used to be told: The chaplain will be happy to punch your TS card. You don't have a TS card? I knew NCO's who had them printed up - handed them out to the trooper in distress. That's a true story; I had one.Bing

RE: File Download

You obviously haven't spent enough time browsing what is now available here. I am a "free" member here, and find that the greatest part is the information in these forums. But, there are things in the downloads that are worth thousands of dollars. Either gladly pay the $30.00 or be patient and log into the downloads when you can, or go away please. What's worth thousands? I don't have time to list all but here is a partial list, with apologies to anyone whose contribution I have not mentioned:
NEC4.0 MP3.1 SeaView P.O.& N. FBL Florida Funnel
Hundreds of locos, physics 4.5, reskins of you name it, superb add-on cabviewsIn addition, most of this content is supported nearly immediately on these forums by the creators of the content. I am primarily involved with a virtual railroad, and don't run what's listed above very often, but I assure you that everything I have downloaded from here ( I admit to being choosy and not downloading anything that didn't come with a good recommendation ) has been well worth what it cost to get. The choice is simple: $30.00 or a relatively small amount of time. You should really check out the merchandise before you decide something is not a bargain. No, wait, there is nothing worth downloading here, go to another site. Then other users who are willing to take the time to connect for free won't have to battle you for a download node. You are so stupid. If it took trying for two weeks to connect for just a single download, the stuff here is worth it. Some people just don't get it at all.

Thanks so much. But, I have to ask, what is a TS card? I'm embarrassed to ask, but I don't get out much. Annabelle

Hi Lady,It's a military thing. It means a tough s**t card. In other words. Well, you get the picture. When you did not like something in the military and started complaining you would get told to take your TS card to the Chaplain to be punched. The Chaplain was the only person that would listen to you and he could not do anything to help you thus TS!I hope that you saw my post above.Rick, President/CEO

Yes, I did. Thank you.Why don't we have Kevarc make a TS card for trolls? Whenever one shows up everybody can post the card, and the stupid person will get no responses except that, and no satisfaction either. AnnabellePS I wish I had known about the cards when all the boys were home. It would have saved me from saying 10 million times, "Who said life was FAIR? If life were fair, I'd be 20 and single."

RE: File Download

I'll agree with all of the above. At one time, the only access I had due to my financial situation (being newly married, paying off debts and having our first child)was via the free access route, and yes sometimes I got frustrated until I knew how the system worked. As it is a busy site, sometimes you have to wait. You just keep trying until you get in. And it was all worth it, even with the longer download times! It costs a lot to keep a site of this size and I appreciate Nels offering the free access to those who can't afford to get in via the pay route. As for the $30 access fee, it's well worth the money for what you're getting, especially when you consider it only comes to $2.50/month! I've paid the fee now that I have the extra money and never looked back!

$30 is a week's worth of lawnmowing? How many lawns do you do, about 1-1/2? I don't know about where you are, but here it costs $20 a pop to get your lawn mowed.Get out in the real world and get a real job, learn what the value of money really is and then come back here and whine!

At fifteen, getting a job is incredibly difficult. I do what I can. And with school, I don't have time for that. I am again asking if anyone has ever considered making web sites and or browser add-ons and if any one here would like to share information on how to do this. I am trying to start an idea here, not a bitch fest.Matt

Maybe I read your inital post wrong but it looks to me that you started bitching right off the bat about $30 being to much for whats here and bitching about how long it took you get in the free way.You said "So long" yesterday so at least salvage some of your reputation,be a person of your word and leave for good.

Then get off your fat a$$ and find a job. There are fastfood jobs out there, you just have to look for them. Most people are patient and will wait to get into the file library if they choose not to pay the $30. Since I am on dialup, I haven't submitted my $30 but if I were on boardband, I would do it in a heartbeat. Here it is plain and simple, if you don't like this website, get the hell out of here. Judging by the response to your initial thread and subsequent posts, most people don't want you around, so keep your word and get out of here...Austin

In my original post I thought I was talking to an adult. My grandson is 13, in school, and delivers papers for his spending money. The jobs are out there, go look! My advice: The real world is not going to change for you, so adapt to the real world. Now go back to playing with your Legos, since "they rule".

RE: File Download

First off:1) I'm not going to say it again. I don't have $30. I am in fact in debt $15 and looking forward to losing my job. Lawns where I'm from are dead by now or will die in a month. I can't make $30. I am taking far to many courses to get a job. AP physics, AP American History, H Pre-Calc. No time for work. I lead a chess team and am involved in other activities. $30 is not in my budget to dish out.2) You people here seem so low class that its amazing this place still exists much less produces anything >you cheap little fart3) If you people know nothing about programming (which would really surprise me) than I will proceed to (when I have time) write a program to do this. I'm not going away unless you ban me. You can stop posting here if you like but I won't unless you do. I still feel that this is something that could be done and whether you feel it is a good idea or not is of course the topic of this disscussion, however I did not intend to talk about:a) how to make money
b) wether or not I should make money
c) anything about money (I believe I clearly stated earlier that I don't have $30 on-demand)
d) that anybody has done anything wrong (I think this site in general is great (though the quality of the people on it seems to have declined a bit) and I was only suggesting an area for ideas.goodnight to you allMatt

RE: File Download

That's how I feel. I've downloaded many routes, including one that runs near my hometown. The P40s and P42s, Superliner sets, etc. have alone been worth the $30. Money was kind of tight when I paid my $30 (that's a tank or two of gas or a weeks worth of groceries for me), but the enjoyment that it has brought was worth itWell said, Bob.

I wasn't going to reply to this, seeing that he said "So long", indicating that he is not coming back. What's the point, unless he has a sneak look at the reaction he caused ! But seeing that the thread is going on and on I will.Would have been nicer to give us a chance to explain, such as pointing out that since the early days of the MSTS Forum things have gone a bit hectic in a number of ways and increasing BANDWIDTH with Web Site Hosts costs money, Nels Anderson can not be expected to provide out of his own pocket. Not forgetting to mention the ever increasing workload he and his Admins have to deal with, again for FREE !No Matt, you and others like you will have to learn that the good things in life are NOT FREE. That also goes for all those MUSIC Peer to Peer MP3 Files down-loaders and swappers who seem to think that it is their right to benefit from the creators talents and efforts producing them and not pay a single cent in return ? I call it STEALING the same as abusing ANY COPYRIGHT is !!! And if it carries on for much longer then the Music Industry will not be able to afford paying the Composers, Creating Studios and CD/DVD Burners enough money to attract new talents and retail shops selling them will have to close down.Would any of you want to spend months writing a book to see it copied page by page in libraries, or E-Copies of it downloaded for free rather than people buying it ? Same thing !!!Sorry, I just had to make that point, being a Programmer myself, it has been bugging me since "Napster" !The PREMIER Membership is worth every cent to me and cheap at that !!!O t t o

Like Otto, I wasn't going to respond but after reading Otto's response I can only say he (Otto) said it best.
It is also worth repeating that those of us who have paid our $30.00 are subsidizing those who are unable to. I don't expect anyone to thank us but I don't appreciate them complaining about something they are getting free at the expense of others.
I am afraid young Matt has an attitude problem that will not be improved.
BTW, I haven't heard reference to the TS card in many a year. DC

RE: File Download

I agree about the TS card, ie I had never heard of it before and I don't know why, as I work for the Navy and Marines. However, it's something I'll remember to use when adressing malcontents and whiners like you Matt. Life is not a free ride. To get the good things in life, sometimes you have to earn them. When I was growing up, it was not an instant gratification society like it is now. If I didn't have the money, I had to wait til I earned it. It didn't come right now. And by the way, you appreciate it more when you work for it.

RE: File Download

I don't have $30. I didn't buy my comp or MSTS. They are pressents. As to the comment about napster:1) you are correct. It is stealing. It is wrong to use these services to download cds instead of buying them. I use them only to preview songs from artists to decide if I like them. If I do, I will buy their cd and the rest of the songs on it. I recently purchesed 3 cds from one artist after previewing their songs using peer-to-peer. Therefore, it helped the artist. And for those artists who don't make the cut, well: write better music and I will buy it.2) The music industry is not blameless either. The cost to make a CD has fallen by bundles, and yet the cost of a music cd has not. Guess who's gettin rich. Nope its not the artist (though they are undouptably paid well for their talents) its the record company (who is often not a very fair or respectable industry itself). If CD's were reasonably priced, it would be less of a problem.as to the general discussion:I'm not trying to whine but to suggest ideas (which, in every other forum I've been to is a good thing).Matt

RE: File Download

I was right when I thought that you were having the odd sneak, Matt ! And you are right in your Paragraph 2). Yes we have been ripped off by the Music CD Publishers for years. But stealing a car because you can not afford to buy it is not the way to get one ! I have suggested to VIRGIN U.K. years ago to make Sample Tracks downloads available on their Web Site so that I can listen to them before deciding what to buy. Did they listen ?Glad to see that you are still here and hopefully have learned a bit about what it takes to run and maintain a Forum like this one. It's a lot of work and getting hacked now and then does not help either !I for one do not mind paying Membership to enable Nels and his crew to carry on with the Forum for everybody's benefit and doing so give those who can not afford it the opportunity to download Freebies when paying members are not clogging up the File Library ! Try it when they are in bed. O t t o

Re the music front, you can find most stuff available here:http://www.allmusic.com/There are a lot of preview tracks available, and it has always been the definitive guide to music (except classical). As for RXdude, I have every sympathy for him. I can loaddown anytime, while the US is asleep or has massive power cuts LOL! i.e. on a bright new UK morning, with power being exported to Europe because we have too much. (plays Randy Newmans "Political Science" in sympathy!).Having had first hand experience of religious bigotry on here: "I am a christian so I will post DTAs full name!", big deal! And another more recent post which had little to do with christianity. In addition to a few of you Christians who send me pathetic viruses which are ages old and couldn't go through tissue paper. Now we have a load of posts referring to a railway siding, that has a biblical reference. Who cares? Rich Garber is religious, but he doesn't force it down my throat with his routes. Finally we have our twee sycophants, which are so pathetic, it defies description. Tongues and posteriors comes to mind, but I won't dwell on that.Incidentally, I have just found an activity for the NEC2 route, which I downloaded ages ago, and have only just installed, called BestonNEC, by Norbert Domokos, who made the excellent NECcommuter, and the subsequent superb activity for NEC4. An absolute gem of an activity, with 103 AI trains. For someone who has no knowledge of US routes, he has done an excellent job. Eat your heart out kevarc! LOLDavid

Well $30 is a good deal.Yahoo gives 25 MB mail box of storage with enhanced mailing features for $30 year.Nels gives several GB of file storage for $30 per year. There is a whole buffet table of content available. People have been generous enough to share most of the content for free. The nodes get loaded because folks around the world like the material.

i used to get all my downloads in the wee hours of the morning and then i paid my 30.00 and i get them anytime i want. i feel sorry for you kid..nothing like making alot of people mad at you right off the bat. i for one liked your idea about making a que for those who are not able to get in right away..but i sure am not going to get into the trouble it takes to maintain this site..to nels and all the rest ..thanks for your tireless work

RE: File Download

darkhorse2 I agree that the que is a good idea. I do not need it as I have paid my $30 and am truly glad that I did. I was unable to do so for some time and I patiently waited until I could get in and never complained unlike some. We should all also note that Matt seems to be comming back an awful lot for someone that has to waste so much time logging in.If you would refer to Matt's first post you can see that he did little but let his frustration overrule his mouth. This is typical with many adults and most teenagers. In reality Matt's problem was that he got upset because it took 10 minutes to get in the first time and took 20 minutes to get in the second time because he pressed the wrong key and logged himself out.As a result he started mouthing off and things went down hill from there. I also think that the fact that he seems to have sufficient money to spend on legos and the computer and MSTS were gifts should be a clue. Matt, why don't you just ask your dad for the money as usual and get on with it?Rick, President/CEO
