Aug-08-01, 11:51 AM (EST) "Brakes" I hope someone can tell me why I can't get the train brakes or the engine brakes to operate individually..The breaks work fine in the dynamic mode useing the throttle but there is no action useing the "Brackets" and the "semi-colon /quotes" keys.. I have reinstalled twice feeling I had a bad install.Nothing has helped so far..I know little about trains but want to learn...Thanks for any help Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-09-01, 02:10 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Brakes" LAST EDITED ON Aug-09-01 AT 02:12 AM (EST)No problem here. The automatic and independent brakes can be applied at the same time. In fact, the proper method to accelerate from a dead stop is to release the automatic, put the throttle in notch 1, then release the independent. Just don't try to apply the automatic when the DB is on. There is a small component on the brake valve rack called a DBM (DB Magnet Valve) that bails off the automatic when DB handle is in positions 1 through 8.Richard Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-09-01, 02:53 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Brakes" I don't follow you on that Rick. I use blended brakes all the time, ie. dynamic and automatic brakes together. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-09-01, 12:10 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Brakes" I understand what you are saying Richard but the problem I'm still haveing is neither one of the mechanical brakes will function.. they simply do nothing when I apply them. the small window appears when I try to engage them and either reads "0" or 'released" depending on whether I'm trying to apply or release them but no action of any kind occurs. as I said reinstalls of the program did not help.. Aug-09-01, 01:30 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Brakes" I could be dead wrong but unfortunately, the only other thing I can think of is a hardware compatibility issue between the keyboard and your system. Don't know what CPU you're using but MSTS appears to be very CPU intensive. Your CPU may not be getting all of the keyboard inputs.Richard Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-09-01, 03:05 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Brakes" You could be right Richard..MSTS certainly requires a very fast frame rate. I am running an AMD 850 mhz processor on a new chaintech motherboard with 512 megs of memory and I do see some jerkeness the faster the train moves... I don't know I guess I'll have to be satisfied with useing the dynamic brakeing system since no one else seems to have this problem.. Thanks for responding... Locomotive brakes can't be applied when you're trying to use the traction motors as generating equipment and in fact they do "autobail" depending on the brake equipment (obviously the old 24, 6 and even some 26's didn't have that feature and had to be manually bailed prior to using dynamics (that being ancient technology). Some units, like F40PHM's have dynamics, but only as a function of "full service" brake reductions where blended braking is automatic and dynamics are not actually independently selectable. >I stand corrected. That post was misleading. The MV-DBI (as is referenced in one of the schematics I was browsing at work last night) known as the DB Magnet Valve on 26C systems provides the same function as the manual bail off feature of the independent brake handle. Only the locomotive consist brakes are released by means of the "Actuating" trainline hose bag.In MSTS this same feature applies except if an automatic application is made and then DB is placed in "Setup", the setup won't occur until a manual bail off is made even with the line DynamicBrakeHasAutoBailOff( 1 )in the .eng file. When the bail off is made the engine "BC" (Brake Cylinder) pressure drops to "0" and the "BP" (Brake Pipe) and "ER" (Equalising Reservoir) remain at the automatic application setting. This tells me that the car brakes are still applied. Also a look at the "Projected Speed" on the track monitor does not increase until the automatic is released. Except for having to do a manual bail off in MSTS this is as "Real as it gets".Richard
