Jun-03-01, 00:14 AM (EST) 1. "RE: What is a "Penalty Brake Application?" I will try to explain this the best I can, bearing in mind I am using Australian "terms" to explain it.
On all locos (in australia anyway) we have a VIGILANCE CONTROL unit. On some trains, you must press a button every 30-45 secs to sort of tell the train youre still alive. If you dont press the button, a light will flash and a whistle or bell might sound, if you still dont press the button, the brake system will dump all brake pipe air and stop the train.
Some trains you dont have to press a button, the movement of a brake or controller will count has a "HIT" and therefore prevent a penalty application. If you are coasting, and dont move the brake or controller, or dont blow the whistle or any other control within 30-45 secs, then you hit a button to register a "HIT". If you dont do either, once again lights will flash and bells will sound, then the brakes will come on.
Its just designed so that you dont fall asleep, or if you have a heart attack, it stops the trains before it gets into too much trouble with a dead driver up front.
Hope this information helps. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
