A while ago there was a survey on how close do you live to the train tracks, well I am very happy to say I live 300 ft. from the Canadian Pacific main line in Maple Ridge British Columbia. My wife and I are avid train fans and love to hear the trains go by at all hours of the day. A lot of people complain about the noise, but remember the tracks were here a long time before most buildings along the track. I am a newbie to the forum but have been an train fan for many years. Now that I am retired I will be video taping all kinds of neat stuff.

RE: How close to tracks

I'm about a half-mile from the main line through orlando. At night, when I lay in bed with the windows open, I can hear the procession of freights make their way through town, chiming at each crossing (there are so many, they don't give a "- - o -" at each - just as progression of toots. A couple of these guys have recognizable styles - ways they make the horn sound when they go through. Some nights I'll go for a bike ride at 10, one that parrallels the tracks for a while. I'll get at least one train throguh that I can stop and watch - always intresting.I suppose its just the right distance - close enough so I can keep track of it, but not so close that its shacking the shingles off the roof.BV-

I'm appr. 100 meters (how many feet is that?) from the Amsterdam - The Hague line with around 15 trains per hour, including the Amsterdam-Paris TGV. The noise from the trains is not much since they are all electric. I call myself lucky....Building Greater Toronto Area incl. TTC-metrolines. Had to restart everything. Tracks 20% ready now.......

RE: How close to tracks

I'm about a block away from Harbor Belt Railway (southwest subsurb of Chicago) which serves many railroads; UP, BNSF, CP, CN, CSX, Conrail, WC, and more. I don't mind the train sounds at all. I don't think my neighbors complains either. I take railroad sounds over airplane anytime. I used to live at north of Chicago-Midway airport. Now, That's a lot of noise! The house use to vibrate cuz of the planes are taking off and flying right over the house. I used to have to tell people on the phone to wait until the plane passes and I had a hard time hearing the TV.

I am the length of about a 5 pack from the East Switch of Marathon siding, the yard east switch is there too. Small yard, 2 tracks 4000ft long. The siding, 6741ft. The sub, Heron Bay Sub, the railway, CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY. I can see the trains from my house, going over the peninsula rd. crossing, 62.88. And I wish there wasn't a rule 14 (I) here! And I get a lot of railway things....rides, in cabs, all the books, conists, everything.Chris Chris Wilson

RE: How close to tracks

I am about 300ft from the CSX (former B&O) line outside of Philadelphia, PA. I reckon I'm around 7 to 10 miles from CSX South Philadelphia Intermodal yard, about a half mile south of Boone Tunnel.I'm also about a half mile from the ex-PRR/PC NE corridor (SEPTA R2) in one direction and a mile or so from the ex PRR West Chester line (SEPTA R3) in the other direction. FOr traction buffs, the ex-PTC Red Arrow line (SEPTA 102?) trolley ends a couple blocks away. Lots of rail lines here!At night I can hear the CSX line (of course!) and the Amtrak on the NE corridor (when they toot!) and sometime I can hear the Silverliners on the R3. All very distinctive horns.Gh

RE: How close to tracks

When I lived in LaGrange Park, Illinois - for 18 years - my front picture window was not more than 175 feet from the IHB tracks (Indiana Harbor Belt). I could sit in my easy chair and read the car markings, did so many times. You got used to the rumble; I learned early on that the Dual turntable for my audio system could not go in the corner of the living room nearest to the tracks: Despite "shock mounting", the vibration from passing trains was transmitted through the shelving, up the turntable base and into the phono cartridge via the stylus, thence amplified and making one dandy roar though the AR speaker systems. Moving the shelving fifteen feet away from that corner solved the problem. Since the tracks are main thoroughfare between division yards in the Chicago area, we saw UP and many other roads, all times of day and night. The tracks cut the suburb in half, requiring two fire houses, one each side of the tracks - for a community of less than 13,000. I miss the trains. Now that i have returned to my native MIchigan, its one way freight per day, weekdays, sometimes none depending upong shipper's requests. I used to wake up at 2 or 3 AM to the sound of EMD fans, the consist would be parked directly across from my bedroom window, short of the road crossing, waiting for dispatcher's clearance. Used to see the Barnum & Bailey circus train once a year, and once I saw and entire armored brigade on the move, in two or three sections. Car after car after car of AFV's, IFV's, Hummvees, support vehicles, long trains. Those were the days ...Bing

I see the CSX "Tropicana Train" regularly and when I was little, the Chessie Steam Special rolled on by. I remember that because my mother ran inside to shut the windows to keep the smoke out!Apparently, a trash train runs by here too. One day it was stopped at the signal nearby and you really knew it! I can look out my window here from where I have my Computer and see the Depot and I can see when the trains go by. I know when the train is on its way into town cause my dog starts howling at it. I think the horns have a high pitched sound in then that hurts my dogs ears or something but she always howls when it honks the hornDon Pottorff

One half to One mile away from the UP mainline that goes through Cajon Pass. I too can lay in bed at night and hear the --0-'s at the two railroad crossings . and sometimes you can hear them go from Idle to Notch 1 while passing but one of the coolest things is if there is enough Locos and Helpers you can smell the diesal after the train passes .My website for MSTS Pic's www.msnusers.com/shanestrains

RE: How close to tracks

I am about 30ft from the main SW/Midlands line in the uk. Some while ago there was some amusing comments about train lovers buying houses near lines, while the majority of the population seem to avoid it! Personally, I love them going by, especially if its the Flying Scotsman, which has passed my house several times. David

>>David David, you have me beat. My front door is approx 40 ft from the right of way fence and of course then 50 ft to the center of the rails, so approx 90 ft to the rail.agree with you, passing trains are music to my ears, was born and raised around it, so doesn't bother me a bit. Started something guess I shouldn't of, that is giving a highball to passing crews. Would be in the yard messing with the pepper patch, smoker, birdbath or grill and would just automatically react with a highball with the tongs, trowel, pitcher or water bucket when they went by. Now the crews answer an imaginary highball when going by, not all the time mind you, but not all that rare either. Does add to the ruckus as a train goes by when trying to watch the news or something interesting on the tube.

Have had the occasion where running an activity and waiting for a meet and the AI train is coming and at the same time a non AI train is going by outside the window. Adds a touch of realism, guess you could say "as real as it gets." Maybe this is what MS had in mind. warren

RE: How close to tracks

Too true! LOL! There is a train going by as I write this! We have a crossing about 200 yards away, and often the trains give a quick smack on the horn, just opposite my house. If I am running the train sim, I reply! How sad is that! The only trains I don't like are the track checkers, which work at weekends about 3am and they wake you up from a mile away and trundle past at 5mph, so you are awake for what seems ages. Mind you they are amazing machines, lifting the track and shoveling the stones back under automatically. Most of the track round here was replaced in the last year, and the old rails are still lying about getting rusty.David

I live about 100 feet from an MBTA commuter line out of Boston. There is a small layover yard and train station across the street and I hear bells and whistles pretty much all day and part of the night.

RE: How close to tracks

I am surround by trains on three sides of the block I lived on. The closest is 10 feet. Tri-met, our local Light rail run westbound And about 100 feet to my left and right run another light rail:
Portland Transit going North and south. As for mainline trains, I am a mile from Union Station and there is an interchange where the Union Pacific and BNSF run. The busiest place to watch trains is across the river: Vancouver station.

About three miles away is the Gunderson Plant so if I get tired of train-watching, I can go see how they are buildI moved to Portland originally because I looked at a railroad map and saw there was five different railroads all running into the town. I figured anyplace that could support five railroads could support me.>A while ago there was a survey on how close do you live to

When I was a kid my great aunt owned a house in Steubenville, Ohio that had Pennsy's River Line running through the back yard about 30 feet behind the back porch. Every train caused a mini-earthquake that would rattle the dishes and heavy trains could make the furniture creep across the room. They bought the house brand-new in 1919 for $6000. When she died in 1986 the house was sold for the same whopping $6000.

RE: How close to tracks

For about a year after my marriage I lived in an apartment that was right across the street from the C&NW Northwest Line (although I think by that time it was Metra operated). It was really kind of noisy...I had the tracks right across the street, and the Kennedy Expressway next the the tracks, with the CTA O'Hare Line running down the middle of the expressway! Drove my newlywed wife up the wall...especially when I would leap out of bed in the middle of the night to watch the freight trains go by! As a child I grew up about 1/2 mile from that same line, but I would frequently go to a neighborhood park (I believe it was called Athletic Field) where you could see those bright yellow and dark green commuter trains go by while having fun in the playground. Actually, I had more fun watching the trains than I had in the playground!
