The Amtrak and New Haven Amfleets – image 1

Howdy, folks. The search engine's giving me nothing, so I'll ask anew:I've got, to my knowledge, three sets of Amfleet coaches available for my use. One is the New Haven set, one is an Amtrak set in red white and blue , and one's stored in the HHL directory. Three questions:1. There's not a lick of difference between any of the Amfleet cars, is there? I've looked at the business car, the cafe (bistro?) car, the "car" (whatver that is), and the coach. Unless I'm overlooking something, they're all the same, and can't be identified externally, correct?2. What phase is that red, white, and blue one? What about the HHL set?3. What is "acelahhlbc"? I could probably use a run-down of the names while we're at it.Thanks in advance.

I belive that "acelahhlbc" would be a car pulled by an HHP-8 Locomotive and it "bc" stands for Bistro Cafe, But Like I said I'm not EXCATLY sure what the difference between Amfleets is.Hope This Helps A Little Chris

It does! I'm having to customize the labelling of my rolling stock, and this sort of information is of use to me. Any idea what "acelahhlcar" is?

RE: The Amtrak and New Haven Amfleets

"Phase" in this case refers to the paint job on the cars. If you see Amfleet 1 or Amfleet 2, without phase, then these are the 2 different types of Amfleet.I understand that Amfleet 1's are for short haul corridor trains, and Amfleet 2's are for long distance. So the Amfleets in MSTS are Amfleet 1's in phase 3 and 4 paint.

1. That's correct.2. I think the "Metroliner" Amfleets are of a Phase 3. The others are in Phase Acela Regional.3. "acelahhlbc" is the Business Class coach.

One key difference, is that I know long distance ones use Amfleet 2s and Short Distance is the 1s. The Ones have a Door in the vestibules at each end, and the 2s have one at only 1 end, the other, houseing power / linen closets.

RE: The Amtrak and New Haven Amfleets

Just to further confuse you MS/Kuju goofed (sounds better that forked up) the physics on the MSTS amfleet which required them to build two different sets... note they did not use 2 different textures just 2 different physics...The screwup is in the brakes.....
Not knowing how to spell train their "field investigators/researchers" put the wrong kind of brakes on the HHP/HHL trainset.... No doubt they were confused by Amkrak's insistence under what's his name (you know the guy currently bankrupting NJT) on appending ACELA to everything including toilets!
What they did was cut/paste the
BrakeEquipmentType( "Air_twin_pipe, Distributor" )
BrakeSystemType( "Air_twin_pipe" )
from the Acela Express Equipment into the HHL sets and then when they were throwing things together for THEIR metroliner (those of us who are marginally aware of the correct spelling of Train call them E60s) they realized they needed cars to connect to it so they used the coach texture from the HHP/HHL set and applied brakes from the superliner (I wonder who told them the difference?) to that....
BrakeEquipmentType( "Triple_valve, Auxilary_reservoir, Emergency_brake_reservoir" )
BrakeSystemType( "Air_single_pipe" )This is all on top of wrong size wheels (on some) no Freds braking values that can stop a 45t car at 100mph in 50ft Friction values that would only be true if the car was a maglev ad naseum! Not to Fear! NALW in partnership with Tolaris and Tom Cain are packaging up "Corrected copies" of all this stuff (Acela Express and HHL) wrapping a pretty little installer around it and adding SamSpades "corrected" Acela and HHP cabs and modifying Joe Realmutto's sound engine for ya along with corrected physics....
Maybe by the time MSTS2 comes out we will have ethnically purged the Kuju junque from your passenger rolls... LOL!Chuck Schneider

Current Update:-Thanks to all who've weighed in on this. -I'm still trying to figure out exactly what acelahhlcar.wag and the Metrocarriage are. I'm inclined to think that the Metrocarriage is in fact the Phase III Amfleet, since "Metro-" would imply that it was part of the Budd RDC Metroliners originally sought for the Pennsylvania and the Penn Central, which we have nothing of. -The question I was asking earlier was founded in ignorance, mostly me trying to figure out what difference there was in the game between various Acela HHL Amfleet coaches, in terms of external appearance. I hadn't peeked at the nuts and bolts of the wag file, and still haven't. -Chuck, thanks for passing that along. I'll look for that, along with those tantalizingly nifty E60s you showed in the screen shot section a while back.

RE: The Amtrak and New Haven Amfleets

Dear N&W 611:Me again, bootednancy....I see your question here also on the Amfleet cars.First (that Amtrak Photo Archive website will explain everything in pictures)Second: Amfleet cars came in 2 varieties (Amfleet 1 in 1975 which was the original order for about 450 cars for "Corridor" trains) and (Amfleet 2 in mid 1980's which were long distance variants in about 120 single vestibule coaches and about 25 single ended cafe-lounge cars) since passengers had a definite problem trying to sleep cramped in seats of an 84 seat coach on an overnight train. The AM2's reduced that to 59 seats with leg-rests.Third: The Amfleet-1 order started basically as 84 seat coaches, coach-cafe cars and coach-cafe parlor cars. Through the needs of specialized or regional trains, many of the original coach-cafe cars were converted to table-lounge-cafes, full parlor cafes (a word on that in a moment on another topic) so very few are originally as built no match each other in some cases.Fourth: The Metroliners were the original PRR/PC electric MU cars, but when they "crapped out" as self propelled cars, Amtrak had the Corridor track and equipment standards upgraded, so the MU cars were replaced by standard 6 car consists of 4 coaches, a table cafe and a full parlor cafe of Amfleet-1 equipment. The METROLINER name was retained. When parlor car service got to expensive to operate on other trains, more of the coach-cafe-parlors were rebuilt to lounge car configurations, or the "new concept (Called Capstone 2001???????)
Acela Bistro car" or used as what the airlines call "Business Class" and Amtrak for a while called Custom Class......larger reserved comfort seat, no ammenities.Fifth:Where this involves MSTS......they screwed things up royally....the Amfleet cars they call Acela are the Phase 5 "Ameobas"
I directed you to in one of my previous posts. The thing they call Metroliner is the same Amfleet-1 car in the common Phase 3 equal stripe scheme. Also, METROLINER ENGINE is KUJU's incorrect designation of the Amtrak E-60...these engines are only 90mph units and are incapable (because of a direct-release airbrake modification and speed limit)of being used on Metroliner Service trains. Nor did Amfleet cars ever45 exist in PRR or New Haven paint schems, this is just a Simmer's creativity with PaintShop-Pro.Hope this Helps
Doug

RE: The Amtrak and New Haven Amfleets

While the Amfleets were never seen in PRR colors, the cars could be used as a representation of the original PRR/PC Metroliner cars, as Amtrak used the Metroliner carbody design for the Amfleet order.Additionally, the Metroliner cars, after their failure, were depowered and converted into coaches that are nearly indistinguishable from Amfleet coaches. A number of Metroliner cab cars are still in service on Amtrak's Michigan trains as coaches now, with the control cabs deactivated and windows plated over. Until the wreck between an Amtrak train and a MARC train in Maryland in the late 90s resulted in Amtrak dropping control-cab coahes, they were used as cab cars on the diesel-powered push-pull trains in the Michigan corridor.RDF
