I've had to reinstall MSTS after a full computer crash (winME is a GONER ) and am having some weirdness in the sounds that had never happened before. While driving a locomtive (doesn't seem to matter which, has happened on several) the sound while just go silent. Sometimes changing views while restart it, sometimes it won't. I've come a cross a few posts that recommend pulling the sliders back to reduce the # of sounds and another to reduce the sound acceleration of directx. Neither has made a difference.
I seem to remember seeing some posts about upping the number of '.wav' files that MSTS can handle, but have been unable to locate those posts. I don't if that's even a factor here. However, since I lost the FAT table in the crash, I'm starting with an essentially new installation. I'm upgraded to 1.2 MSTS, etc., and all drivers are up to date. I am testing the install as I go before adding too many enhancements and would like to resolve this first.
Any and all thoughts on the matter are welcome. Thanks for any and all help. Lyle

RE: intermittent sound - looking for solution

Hi Lyle,
You said WinME is a goner, what O/S are you using now??.
If it is XP check for IRQ conflicts with your sound card, XP has a bad habit of auto selecting IRQ`s for the system, if there is any conflict try moving the sound card (if you have one fitted) to a different PCI slot with luck that should resolve any problem, onboard sound is another problem, not as easily fixed.Stew aka 6330trainfan

RE: intermittent sound - looking for solution

Yes, if its Win98 there is a sound fix, but we don't know your OS. You also don't say if you are using mobo onboard sound (which can lead to problems) or a separate soundcard. The advice about moving an expansion card to a different slot is a good one: I've had systems absolutely, flat refused to run with a modem card anywhere but the last PCI slot. Happened twice, with a Win95 and then a win98 system. Why? Ask Redmond. Something to do with those dumb IRQ's, I would guess. The message you refer to I can get for you, but let me say this first: Running WinXP HOme, 512 Meg RAM and a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz soundcard, I have tried pumping the soundcfg.dat file per the suggestion. It has not made a bit of difference. I put it back to default settings, the sound is no different, if anything the system probably has a bit more RAM to play with. A swapfile or paging file - can't they decide what they want to call it? - can make a difference, as can various cache settings. All depends on your OS and sound setup, per above. Sound problems are extremely tricky to islolate and fix. I run all TS sound settings maxed, no problem, but sound is variable. A LOT of variables. Bing
