After my shape file mananger not working for a month, and me thinking of various ways to fix the problem, i found a way that will fix it, a round about way, but one that does work nonetheless. first of all, this problem of shape file maganger has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH SFM WHAT SO EVER. It lies in the ffedit_unicode.exe file itself. in a windows update (i do not know which one), but it corrupts the ffedit_unicode.exe file and renders it useless. This is the reason why SFM cannot decompress or compress shape files, because the program it uses (ffedit_unicode.exe) does not work correctly. One way to fix it is to first rename your current msts folder to something like xTrainsimulator. Install the game again. copy the ffedit folder ONLY. replace all files in the ffedit folder of the older msts. delete the newly installed game and rename your old version back to what it was before. SFM should work now. I will upload the ffedit_unicode to the file library so you all do not have to do this. Until it is uploaded, this little thing i described WILL fix it. This problem occurs on all operating systems (Win 98, Win 98 SE, Win ME, Win XP). this should fix it on all versions but i KNOW it will work on Windows 98 second edition. hopes this gets all of you your SFM back, and also you MUST have the first SFM version in order for the older ffedit_unicode.exe from the original game to work, the newer version will not work with the older ffedit_unicode. it would be a good thing to back up the file on a diskette so if SFm does not work, you can replace the file and it will once again work.

RE: How to fix shape file manager problems with compres

This was tried weeks ago, but alas did not work. Most files compress/uncompress fine - it's the big ones (namely my F's and Geeps) that no longer work. Worked fine before - and I was successfull several times since - but I'm at a loss as to where the problem is.FWIW, I'm on XP.Cheers!

Bill, it's easier to open the Game.cab file on the first disk and then decompress your wanted files. Saves you a whole MSTS install.Tried it as well, no avail. I've got several versions of SFM.
No idea either why it stopped working overnight!

Best regards,
Richard.

Marc, i think its a glitch in the program. i have heard the size of the file has alot to do with that and sfm cannot compress/decompress large shape files. i think route riter can and using that for uncompressing/compressing large shape files would be the best advice i could think to give at the moment.Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 10Hauling America one pixel at a time

RE: How to fix shape file manager problems with compres

I've always used Route Riter to De-compress and Compress any and all shape files with no problems. Was going to try SFM until I read in its readme file that IE 5.5 or higher is required. I only have IE 5.0, so I never even tried installing SFM. I just deleted the zip from the library. Jim

Hack, my version of SFM didn't work either.
I installed the original FFEditC_Unicode + the cfg file from the MSTS disk 1 (game.cab file) then I followed the instructions as given by Decapod (see my previous link) and then I tried SFM again. I decompressed both a F-unit as well as a Geep. Both large files. Both no problem anymore. I've got windows XP as well. One thing though; after editing the SFM.HTML file, SFM doesn't come up with the Dos window anymore. But you'll see that the .S file is decompressed though (when it's finished). Hope this works on your system!

Best regards,
Richard.

RE: How to fix shape file manager problems with compres

Two possible causes for this error ...1) not using windows 2000 or XP - the file CMD.EXE must exist in the winnt folder2) the path to FFEDITC_UNICODE is incorrect - click on the link just under the program title to check that SFM knows where to find this file.

I do not have the file CMD.EXE or the folder WINNT. I suppose this is because I'm running ME, not NT. . .The path is correct. Any suggestions for those of us using 98/ME? Thanks.

RE: How to fix shape file manager problems with compres

Win98/ME uses COMMAND.COM and WinNT/2000/XP uses CMD.EXE for the Command Prompt. You could try making a copy of COMMAND.COM and rename the copy CMD.com first then CMD.EXE second.I have WinXP and don't have a WINNT folder.Win98/ME COMMAND.COM is located in the Windows folder.WinXP CMD.EXE is located in the drive:\WINDOWS\system32 folder.Lastly, check your computer system PATH by pressing START, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt, type PATH or path, Enter.PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND - doesn't need the *.com at the end of the COMMAND.You can add to your path by editing your autoexec.bat file. Start by making a copy of the autoexec.bat file just in case. If you already have a PATH= line and it doesn't exceed 256 characters (I think that is the limit), just add ;c:\Windows\CMD to the end of the line and save the autoexec.bat. If your existing PATH= is extremely long already then try the second method below.PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\WINDOWS\CMD - assumes you copied command.com and renamed it CMD.COM or CMD.EXE.PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND but has a whole line across the page.
PATH=C:\WINDOWS\CMD;%PATH%Since I don't have TrainSim on a Win98/ME machine, I can't vouch if this will work or not.

RE: How to fix shape file manager problems with compres

Hi Paul,I see you are SFM designer. I guess what you are saying is, at the moment, SFM will NOT run in Win98/ME?Lastly, just for the folks that may have tried what I recommended. It wouldn't have blown up your computer in any way, you probably would have received an error message.

RE: How to fix shape file manager problems with compres

It certainly used to work with 98/ME - I'll just have to do a bit more research on how to call other programs from hta javascript programs (which MS probably consider a security risk)

RE: How to fix shape file manager problems with compres

Since you are using JavaScripts, I wonder if an update to Virtual Machine (MS Java Platform) caused the problem.Secondly, a new copy of WinXP with SP1 doesn't include Virtual Machine anymore (part of the court case settlement). If one has the original WinXP and uses the correct version of the SP1 update, Virtual Machine is still supported.I saw a post (somewhere) where one could download the MS Virtual Machine.

Javascript is completely unrelated to Java (apart from the name and similar syntax) - it uses the file WSCRIPT.EXE (among others) to run.So the JVM has no effect on it- I'm still experimenting

Hi Paul,Let me know if my suggestions are irritating to you. I don't want to upset you in your search for a solution.Unless I hear from you, I will continue to throw out suggestions.
*.hta - I wonder if individuals having problems might have changed the association of the script file under Windows Explorer, tools, folder options:Extension: HTA
Content Type (MIME): application/hta
Opens with: MSHTAIf the WScript uses IE, then my other thought is have they set the IE security to NOT run Scripts.
