LAST EDITED ON Apr-26-03 AT 00:11 AM (EDT)

While almost terminating my run on the NEC Multiplayer, I come across a signal that's unknown to me. No, the animated picture I'm about to show you does not appear on the NORAC Signal Rules list! Although, this signal is closest to an Approach Slow, does anyone know what's the name of it, its indication, and how is it used?

The Canadian Trackside Guide shows yellow over flashing yellow as clear to slow, "proceed approaching the next signal at slow speed". The signal guide at the BNSF web site, shows no signal like this. Since this is a PRR signal, what we need is some historic data on PRR signal aspects. A Google search brought up a PRR rule book from 1956. There is rule 284, that is like the signal above, but the lower signal does not seem to be flashing, it is called approach slow.

Thanks for the help, Sharon. I do have to agree that the indication meaning you mentioned does apply to the signal that seemed closest to an Approach Slow. I suppose this "Yellow over Flashing Yellow" was an error when it comes to the NORAC Signal Rules. I'll remember this when I approach this signal again. Again, thanks for your help. One more thing: how does this signal work? Does it come before a Restricting signal or...?

RE: Who knows this signal?

My research comes up with the same as indicated above....the lower signal should not be flashing. As for an 'approach slow', engineer should reduce immediately to medium speed and approach next signal at slow speed. Next signal probably would be restricting, but not 'stop' (or this signal would be 'approach'). Medium speed- not exceeding 30 MPH. Slow speed- not exceeding 15 MPH. This from '68 Penn Central rule book.

I'm no expert, but I think it means that you can proceed to the next signal and through that, there is a red signal. Just a thought. Matt13 year old Steam Loco driver.Who knows this signal? – image 4Anyone for a Multiplayer on Sea view???

RE: Who knows this signal?

Franklin, this is an invalid signal. On the prototype you would have to stop your train and notify the dispatcher for the ok to pass this signal. Now if the top signal head was displaying two reds or three yellows in a horiz pattern ie "000" then the signal would be a medium approach, meaning approach the next signal preparing to stop not exceeding medium speed. Medium speed is 30 mph. It looks like there is an error in the signal script file for the NEC.Have Fun,
Rich S.

RE: Who knows this signal?

The top head is a B&O style color position light so NO center light. The lower head, however, is a PRR style diverging head. The problem here is that these two guys just don't go together! I agree that this is a signal displaying an improper indication which, by GCOR rule, REQUIRES a stop and notify the dispatcher and proceed only on verbal authority.Jim Duncan
