RE: Slow down on XP systems ?

Glad I didn't install it. I always wait a bit to see what sort of havoc arises from the release before I install. Ya gotta love a company that needs to release patches for their patches! -Jeff

RE: Slow down on XP systems ?

Your totally correct. I would suggest all XP users to drop the above patch like a hot potato. It slows everthing down to constipation speed. I uninstalled it and regained my previous speed.

Interesting to note, I installed it and haven't noticed a bit of slowdown. As they say it effects "some" users. Guess I was lucky.-VerneSlow down on XP systems ? – image 1

RE: Slow down on XP systems ?

Apparently, this problem only happened on some systems. It was a topic of discussion at last Wednesdays computer club. Anyhow, due to the nature of some patches to totally screw up your system, aside of a on line security issue, why patch the operating system if it isn't broke.SRV Ron

RE: Slow down on XP systems ?

My system is a pentiun 4 2.4Ghz processor and it seemed to affect it's performance. Strange that it only seemed to change some users system speeds.

RE: Slow down on XP systems ?

Thanks for the info...it DID seem to affect my system. I wasn't sure what was doing it, but removal of it caused things to go back to what seems to be normal speed. It was affecting things such as the "My Pictures" area, as I do a lot of digital photography and like to rename the individual photos to suit my needs, etc. It was taking 10-15 seconds to being up the "rename" boxes witht hat patch installed. Now that it's gone, everything is instant again....I know it sounds trivial, but it was bothering me....Thanks again for passing on the info.

I don't think it's AMD, I have an Athlon and had no slowdowns. I deleted the upgrade anyway, but noticed no difference.Jeff L

THANK YOU!
My system's been crawling ever since the update, and I'd not gotten around to searching for which of the little buggers was causing the problems. You just saved me MUCH troubleshooting time.

RE: Slow down on XP systems ?

I'm glad I read this thread!!!!! I thought my Win XP was corrupt, even after a DOS level repair job, and was resigned to spend all day tomorrow (and probably the next day too) re-installing a fresh version. I deleted Q811493 and now my system runs like stink again. Thanks for the post.

HighGroundSunnuva-GUN! I had been mystified as to what had caused my computer's slowdown! I just removed Q811493, and my machine's back to its old, zippy self. Thanks for the pointer!Warp-factor five . . . .

I didn't install it due to these comments. But, how could I check to see what patches ARE installed? What's the way to this, thru the control panel? Thanks

RE: Slow down on XP systems ?

Ted,Go into the control panel and look for "Add or Remove Programs". Once there, you will be looking for "Windows XP Hotfix". Microsoft's patches will designated with a "Q" than a number.Edward K.

RE: Slow down on XP systems ?

Apparently the patch in question only slows down computers that have SP 1 installed, and did not upgrade to SP 2.

RE: Slow down on XP systems ?

Hi,SP2? Never noticed that there was a SP2.
I installed SP1.
Due to this thread I looked in the Add/Remove list and discovered several entries marked with SP2.
So may be, I have SP2. But never installed it by myself.
May be the automatic update installs SP's too.Dick van den HovenSlow down on XP systems ? – image 2

RE: Slow down on XP systems ?

Perhaps it was coincidence,or a touch of anxiety after reading this thread initially, but indeed my system did slow down after installing the patch.IE slow to load programs after clicking a shortcut, and logging on to my ISP was very slow.I even inadvertantly opened programs\files twice, because I thought the shortcut hadn't worked the first time. Now after a few days everything has improved, with nothing done by me outwith my normal maintenance tasks.
I do a defrag(even though XP says it's not required),and virus scan once per week, but I can't claim that to be the cure,as no improvement was noticed just after these actions. All I can say is that everything seems to be fine now.
As the machine runs 24\7,I can't even claim that a reboot solved anything either. One of XP's mysteries I think?

RE: Slow down on XP systems ?

It doesnt affect my system, and I have found in the past, that problems normally get sorted out within a week anyway. I believe the correction for this problem has already been applied. I always use automatic updates, and have never had problems. (touch wood!).The guys who do this stuff are payed really well, and I trust them more than I trust some guy who says back it off with no knowledge of what he had installed in the first place. it is the same with DXdiag, it may cause a few problems but soon gets fixed.David

>>The guys who do this stuff are payed really well<<Now, if they would only do their job as well as they get paid, you wouldn't need patches. Don't ask about the number of contractors that worked on XP, they aren't paid as well.Bill

>SP2? Never noticed that there was a SP2. The labels on patches aside, SP2 for Windows XP hasn't been released yet. It's been pushed back to a summer release to help comply with some of the anti-trust decrees.

My understanding is that the XP Professional is a much more stable program than XP Home. Is there a chance that this affects one version and not the other?

RE: Slow down on XP systems ?

I have a 2.0 ghz Pentimum 4 system running XP and did notice a slight slowdown over the past week, and yes, I had the patch. Started to take it out and got the warning it would impact Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, so I answered no, don't continue...but to my surprise it did anyway, MS took control of my system's fate at that point.Preliminary checks since the re-boot do look like things are operating as they used to, and so far no problems in IE or OE. I guess there's always trepedation could you be causing more trouble than you fix...so if anyone else attempts it...choose wisely!Aloha, Jeff Link
