I have a nice system, not the fastest but nice none the less. XP2200, 512DDR400, ATI9700PRO, WD1200. But I have slow frame rates where as a friend of mine doesn't have as quite up to date equipment and gets better rates. I try to run in a resolution at the one right under 1600x1200 in 32 colors. I've played with the settings and have got everything turned on.Any help would be appreciated.Benjamin

try rebooting, i noticed the other day I had horrible performance, rebooted and hugh performance gain, I guess one of my programs had a bad memory leak

RE: Slow Frame Rates

I agree with IcyFire. I always reboot and then exit virus scan and firewall. This results in system resources at 98% to 99%. Some may argue this has no bearing on frame rates but my clunky old system cranks out pretty respectable frame rates. I make that claim based on a poll done on frame rates some time ago on this forum. BTW, don't forget to reactivate virus scan and firewall before going on line.

They are extra programs that are running that do not need to be running.Maxmem is VERY BAD as it rolls out parts of programs that are not needed "at the moment" but when these parts are again required a disk access is required. This defeats the potential gain.Derek

RE: Slow Frame Rates

>Neither cacheman or maxmem will benefit anybody. Wow, that's quite a statement Derek! I beg to differ. I can definitely say I've benefitted. I run "End it all" to shutdown any unnecesary apps, then recoup recources with Cacheman. Just as clean as a reboot. (depending on how you boot, possibly even cleaner)I haven't been able to see any noticable difference between this method, and the reboot method. (Except for the time spent booting)>They are extra programs that are running that do not need to

(Take into account that my experience with MaxMem was using Win98 and WinME. XP might be quite a different situation)My advice to the original poster is to try the options people give, and make your own decisions what works best for you. Computers are still very much a black science. What works well for some doesn't work at all for others, even with the same setup.Otherwise you'll just get bogged down by all us bozo's arguing about the best way to use the restroom. -Jeff

RE: Slow Frame Rates

>You don't mention HOW you have benifitted?? I thought that was obvious. I've used them, found them useful. Thus, benefitted.>Cacheman cannot recoup recources, it is a cache manager. Cacheman is indeed a cache manager. Well spotted Derek. However, if you've used it, you'd know that Cacheman also has a function that recovers memory from apps. no longer using it, thus making it instantly available to your system. RAM is a resource, yes? Ram is possibly the most precious resource we have at our disposal in our PCs.Yes, XP is better at recovering memory than previous OS's, but it still needs help. It's fairly easy to see this work. Look and see how much available Ram you have prior to shutting down unnecesary applications. Now shut them down and check your Ram. Not much better right? CP usage is better, but not much Ram is made available. Now have Cacheman recover the Ram. See how much available Ram you have now? Sometimes this can gain you 60MB or more. How can this not be seen as a benefit? Any more usable Ram you can get will help your application (such as MSTS) load quicker.>And the benefit here is?? Umm... No time spent rebooting, and more Ram available for system use?>Maxmem does not shut anything down? Maxmem recovers Ram no longer in use by other apps. Much like Cachemans memory recovery function. It doesn't shut anything down.>You do not give any measurable data. You mean other than saying I use it and it works great for me? OK, you're right. That's not measurable. Looks like 98% of the people on the forums aren't posting measurable data Derek.-Jeff

RE: Slow Frame Rates

Without knowing how your friends system is set up, it's a bit hard to say why he may be getting better frame rates. Is he running the same screen resolution/graphics options enabled/route/consist/etc...? -Jeff

RE: Slow Frame Rates

My friend is running the same display options maxed out. The same resolution and colors. Now, were running trains on the Sandpatch and have built a different consist than the one that comes with it but thats pretty much it. I'm hitting rates of 10fps and hes hitting somewhere around 20.Whats the big deal?

LAST EDITED ON Apr-26-03 AT 05:16 PM (EDT)

Interesting discussion here. Thought I'd throw in my two bits (actually, 'bout 10 cents worth).
I have never tried Cacheman or MaxMem, so I can't speak for them.
I use a small program called "FreeMem Pro". It uses very little resource, and can reclaim memory with a double click (according to the way you set it up).
It can be set up to monitor background operations, and reclaim memory without bothering what's running (again-according to the way you set it up).
Not being very computer savvy, it seems to do a good job for me, and if I remember right, it's only $20.00. They also have a very good free version, at least, I think they still offer it.
Whelp-there's 10 cents, lookin' for a nickel change.
HawkEdit 1: For those interested:http://www.meikel.com/en/products/freemem/The television's going, and the wash still on the line.
I hear the whistle blowin'-the train is right on time.
I know I ought'a catch her-she's taken my last dime.

RE: Slow Frame Rates

You don't say what motherboard you have but make sure you have installed the latest chipset drivers (IDE, AGP etc) for your model. Check you have the latest Catalyst ATI drivers for your card (3.2). In short make sure you have up to date drivers for all your kit!In MSTS you might want to disable all shadows options as these can significantly slow down any system for little benefit.

RE: Slow Frame Rates

I have a new motherboard, a gigabyte GA-7vaxp, 2 G AMD processor, 1 G ram, locked down to 512 usable, and just installed a ATI Radeon 9200 AGP card, locked to run at 8x.
frame rates when its bad is 39, and in some places have seen 59.
this with the video set to 1024x768x16 million, and shadows turned OFF.
win 98SE, BTW
