I've been playing around with 3D-Perfection Models "The 3D-Sounds Package" (http://www.3d-perfection.com) and reached the point where I wanted to try added their sounds to my own models. And I found something interesting...They include a sound for jointed rail that I thought would be a nice thing to use with old 40 foot box cars and other stuff from an earlier time. I have a bunch of New Haven cars that I repainted a while back so I thought I'd try it on them. First, though, I needed to hear again what they sounded like with the default sounds. So, I made up a consist, fired up the sim and took the train out and...no sound. I'd never noticed it before, but these cars make no sound! What I discovered was an extra parenthesis in the .wag file which essentially ended the file early; everything after a certain point was being ignored, including the sound declaration. Remove one parenthesis and suddenly...sound!The reason why I mention this is that I suspect it affects lots of other people. I based my New Haven cars on the original model by Larry Goss and Roger von Ahrens and a lot of other people repainted that model too. I checked, and found the same .wag file error in other cars and I suspect that all these 40 foot box cars have the same error in them! So, if you have 40 foot box cars in your collection you might want to make the same easy fix that I did. The attached picture shows which parenthesis to remove in the .wag file of each affected car. Hope this helps!

RE: Silent 40 Foot Box Cars

Even after the fix these cars still don't make very much noise. I guess that's how Kuju designed it. They must have been into stealthy trains.

RE: Silent 40 Foot Box Cars

Right, the default sounds do not provide all that much sound! That is what the 3D Perfection sound package is intended to address, but of course it wouldn't have worked either until the .wag file was fixed.

RE: Silent 40 Foot Box Cars

Nels,I just posted a thread about this flaw on April 11th... <http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID3/17296.html>.The only thing I would add is that this problem is not just with the 40' boxcars but also comes embedded with many of the more modern car packs. I routinely check each and every Wag file downloaded from the library before using the car. It seems there has been an awareness in the Forum about this problem for awhile now but always great to post reminders since I had to figure it out the hard way. Thanks.Hugh

RE: Silent 40 Foot Box Cars

Well, I didn't know if this was new to anyone or not. It obviously slipped past a lot of repainters in the past though! Hopefully with better tools available now this sort of thing won't happen so often.
