Has anyone else noticed that the steam trains aren't exactly realistic. i may be wrong as i only have the default ones but thenoise doesn't link with what you are doing. eg when braking the scotsman still continues to pour out steam and puff. Can this be changed for more realism?

RE: Steam trains

Tried a search in the trainsim library for all sections for sndfix.zip. Received no results. Can you verify, or suggest a search by section?

RE: Steam trains

It's actually sndfix10.zip. It also only applies to the Flying Scotsman, but it's worth it I think. I also like scotspol.zip which are shiny/polished textures for the Scotsman. She looks purdy all dolled up! -Jeff

RE: Steam trains

Smoke is not a function of accelerating or braking. It is a function of coal being added to the fire by the fireman. Steam engines don't function like internal combustion engines where you step on the gas and they go. There is a delay to burn the coal or oil, heat the water, turn it to steam and build pressure. That all takes time so smoke is not a function of whether the train is braking or not. There were many cases where a train would have a long hill to pull following a stop and the fireman would build as much of a fire and steam pressure as he could and often overfill the boiler with water to preheat it knowing that very soon the engineer would require more steam than could normally be generated. Steam on the other hand is a function of cutoff that the engineer establishes through the throttle position and the valve gear set up. As you move the valve gear toward center you reduce wear and stroke and generally increase speed. Steam should be reduced normally when a train is braking.

RE: Steam trains

Which ones? Can their sound criteria be applied to other engines? I agree that having the sound of the throttle wide open when the throttle (OK regulator) is closed is a little irritating.

RE: Steam trains

All of Stuarts' files have this built into them, and are made for several different wheelsizes, and 2 or 3 cylinder. They are well worth the download and time to learn how to use them.mervyn@madasafish.com

RE: Steam trains

Wow, what a difference. I downloaded Stuart's 2 cyl file from the site that Al suggested. While it's still not true driver sync, it's pretty darned close - a big improvement. It's not an easy install, but following the instructions, and with a little trial & error I'm getting the effects I want.I started last night with John Fowler's SP Pacific 2479. I also noted that the driver rotation on the engine is too fast for the speed being represented, so I used the "b" file option for this locomotive. I suspect I'll use the "a" option for smaller-drivered engines. Anyway, the exhaust rythm seems to be appropriate for the represented speed now, and once you get above 30 mph or so, the drivers move fast enough that you really can't see the difference anyway.I did find that I had to sort of build my own sound files by adding much of the american sounds of bell and whistle to the FS style sms file included in this down-load. Not being particularly conversant in the building if eng files and so forth, I found with a little observation and trying things out, I was able to replace the English peanut whistle with a multi-chimed whistle a little more appropriate for the engine I modified, and added a bell. I am still not satisfied with the airbrake sounds, but I think I can play around with it a little until I get the effect back that the Pacific originally had. Thanks, again for the advice, and hope the same helps Jason 7890, who originated this thread.
