On EBay they have a few Official Equipment Registers from the late 1970's for about $20. Is this a fair price? Would it be helpful for 2003?
What does a new one cost?Annabelle

It would be good for historical purposes. The car types with their codes should be pretty much like it is now, but some intermodal would not be on it.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: OER.

They are currently $40.00 per quarter for new ones to the RR's. A 70's version is of value to modelers and collectors of the era since it is an accurate reprsentation of what RR's were around before several mergers - BNSF, CNW-UP-SP, CN-IC-WC, N&W and SOuthern as some examples adn the equipment each had. If you want to understand todays rr's you will need a relatively recent one. Try calling a local yard office for a rr and see if you can one direct when the new ones come out at the end of the quarter. they usually just throw them away. I was mistaken when I called it an OER earlier. It is an ORER which stand for Oficial Railway Equipment Register.

RE: OER.

I have just spent over 2 hours trying to find an ORER from CSX, the railroad that runs through my area. The medium size yard at Monroe, NC said, 'They have a computer program for trains?' The Jacksonville, FL headquarters said, 'I have no idea what that is, let me connect you with equipment.' Equipment said, 'I haven't seen one of those in 10 years or more.' Charlotte yard said, 'We don't use them anymore'. CSX website has a glossary that gives me a definition, but no information unless I am a customer. But it does show the cars that would be available to me if I became a customer, plus a way to access their mainframe computer! By the way, the woman in Florida told me she 'thought CSX had merged with a Texas railroad and perhaps they could help me'!!!Paying for one seems better and better.Annabelle

RE: OER.

What a runaround and a bunch of idiots. The railroads are forgetting, yet again, that they are customer driven, not the other way. Kevin Arceneaux

RE: OER.

kevarc:Do you have one? How did you get it? If I knew where to get one I would be glad to pay postage or whatever, though $40 seems a lot for a new one. But what I would like to do is get one and sit by the railroad tracks and just look at the cars, maybe like the train-spotting they do in England.Annabelle

RE: OER.

Is there anything smaller that would have, say, engine numbers and railroads to use for train-spotting? Somehow that appeals to my love of research and cataloging.

Here are a few links to some excellent sites that are like a clearing house of RR related links:
http://www.railserve.com/
http://www.railroaddata.com/
http://www.railfan.net/There are links to rosters and other goods info. This link is to a site that descibes activity down here. I mother-in-law live about a 1/2 mile from the engine shed in New Iberia. The MP trakcs are gone but you can still see the roadbed.

This is a great MP site that has a lot of general info

RE: ORER.

Annabelle, the easiest way to get an ORER is from eBay. Do a search on "Equipment Register" and you are very likely to get several hits. By and large price gets much higher the older it is. There's no need to jump right in and try and buy right away...watch for a month and see what the final price is on them and that'll give you all the price info you need to be a successful bidder.I have about 18 issues covering the early 1920's to the early 70's and almost every one came from eBay.

RE: ORER.

I also see them at train shows from time to time, but you'll most likely pay more at a show than you would on Ebay.-Jeff

RE: OER.

Hi Annabelle
ORER is a good register to have if you are modelling a particular period. I have registers from the mid 1040s' and 1950s' and around 1970. When my D & C RR wasoperational in the basement I was able to model equipment right down to the correct reporting mark numbers, build date, etc. Also shows the RRs' that used to be. For $20 i would say go for it.
