I'm having trouble getting Bill Hemb's "Common.cab" aliased version of Christine Sweetnam's F-unit cab to work. I tested the engine (The FBL F-unit) with Conbuilder, and no errors were reported, yet when I tried to drive the engine, the game reported the "can't create cabview" error, and the game quit to the desktop. Onyone have any sugestions?
BTW I dont know how useful this information is, but I aliased the cabview to the .cvf file in the common.cab folder, rather than having a .cvf file in the engine's "cabview" folder.Jonathan Nikiforovs.

RE: F unit cab troubles.

Try putting the cvf file in the cabview folder. Cabviews are quite a bit more fickle than sounds and aliasing to the common.cab folder. This is a method I prefer.Kevin Arceneaux

The only folder is the cabview and it contains only the alias cvf file. I have no sound folder.Kevin Arceneaux

I got it working. Seems that the the correct paths (..\\..\\.ace) were left out of the .cvf file, which is why I aliased the cabview directly to the .cvf file in the common.cab folder in the first place. I have since modified the .cvf file with the correct paths.Jonathan Nikiforovs.

RE: F unit cab troubles.

Yep. You got it right. Any cabview can be aliased in this way from the eng file into the common.cab system with no need for an individual cabview folder. Sound will work in the same way, but with sms files being much larger it needs more work to get it going.mervyn@madasafish.com

Actually .sms files take much less time to alias than cab view files. Here is why. In .sms files, I use search and replace. Example:( Find: ( " Replace with ( "..\\..\\Common.snd\\567snd\\ ). Since the .wav filenames in .sms files are always in quotes, the method of replacing ( " with the path you want works almost every time. This method will not work in .cvf files for two reasons.
1) filenames are not always in quotes
2) items other than filenames have ( " , and changing these items will make the file unusable. If the .cvf file already has alias paths, you can use search and replace. Jonathan Nikiforovs.

RE: F unit cab troubles.

I never alias a cabview straight to the common.cab folder, I use very few of them. Mostly I use MLT's or Deko cabs. I don't like the flat cabs. I also have had all kinds of problems with aliasing from the eng file. I alsway use a alias cvf file in the cabview folder, more consistent results.I keep a txt file with the different alias lines that I just copy and paste into eng files, don't have to type a thing. Reduces the chance of errors.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: F unit cab troubles.

I started aliasing the sound, so there would be no sound folder in each and every loco some time ago. Recently I did the same with cabviews and have had some luck. If the cabview is alaised for a particular loco, then it has no cabview folder. After reading all your posts on this, I may revert back the other way.

RE: F unit cab troubles.

I've wanted to ask this for a long time: Lots of downloads come with alias sound or .cvf files, but can do you "make" an alias file for those that don't? And can you modify an alias file to point to a cabview or sound folder other than the one assigned to it?

RE: F unit cab troubles.

As I use Train Store, I now have a copy of every cab I use in the common.cab folder, with each cvf amended to get the graphics from the common.cab system. All that is needed after the cvf is set up, is a line in the eng file to alias from the correct folder. Once the cvf file is correctly set up there are no problems at all. If you think about it, the common.cab folder system is no different than using MLT, Dekosoft, 3D Trains, TA or any other, except for eliminating the step to the cabview folder, which then refers to the foldername contained in the cvf.The possible difficulty where engine sets all use a common filename for the main cabview file, with each one contained in the engines cabview folder is easily overcome by renaming the ace and amending the cvf. Then all files can reside in the (common) folder, once again, no cabview folder needed after the cvf is amended.
