Thanks to the special efforts of our beloved and glorious leader, Nels Anderson, the GM&O Route will shortly appear in the files section!There are a total of 8 separate zip files which must be CAREFULLY installed according to the following procedures. This process supersedes any readme instructions found in the download!!!WARNING!!! THIS ROUTE REQUIRES THAT THE END-USER HAVE ALL SIX OF THE DEFAULT M$TS ROUTES INSTALLED. IT WILL NOT WORK WITHOUT ALL SIX ROUTES!THE COMPLETE RELEASE IS 493 MB! Expect this to take a LONG time to download.If you do not wish to download over the Internet, the entire route is available by mail or UPS through Team GM&O. A special PayPal account has been set up to accommodate this option.Installation Procedure -- GM&O Beta Route1) Download the following files to a temporary directory on your computer:
gmo01a.zip
gmo01b.zip
gmo01c1.zip
gmo01c2.zip
gmo01c3.zip
gmo01c4.zip
gmo01d.zip
gmo01e.zip
gmo01f.zip2) Each of the above files contains one or more subdirectories of the route. The exception is the "c" series of files which are the entire TILES directory split into four parts for easier download (the total directory is 249 MB!)3) Using Explorer, create a directory under the Train Simulator Routes directory called GM&OP0.4) Carefully extract the zipped files to the directory you created in step #3.5) After ALL 8 zip files have been extracted, double-check your GM&O route folder to ascertain that the files have been placed into the appropriate sub-directories.6) Finally, run the file C:\ProgramFiles\MicrosoftGames\TrainSimulator\Routes\GM&OP0\install.bat This installation file will copy the shapes needed from the six default routes found in M$TS.Caveats:* Team GM&O accepts NO responsibility for any potential damage to your computer, files, programs, or any other associated hardware or software. YOU, the end-user, are solely and completely responsible for the safe-keeping of your computer and files.* Team GM&O makes no warranty that this route is either complete or ready for 'prime time'. This release is a BETA RELEASE ONLY! As such there are likely unfound bugs and other potential problems in the route. You agree, as a condition of downloading and installation of the beta version, to report all bugs to Team GM&O in a positive, constructive manner as a VOLUNTEER BETA TESTER.* The activities included with the beta version require non-default equipment. Engines and cars may be found at www.mstsgmo.com* You may freely distribute this route under the condition that you properly acknowledge the authors and include all files as originally provided to you WITHOUT MODIFICATION.* You, the end-user, may not modify any portion of the route or activities without the explicit approval of Team GM&O except for personal purposes. Activity writers and scenery designers/builders are always welcome and encouraged to join Team GM&O!!! GOOD LUCK WITH THE DOWNLOAD! Please advise me of any problems encountered with installation.JBD

>I think the GM&O route will be worth the downloaded.Hell, I'm building a brand new computer just so I can play this route! 2.4 GHz Pentium 4, 1 GB of DDR RAM, 80 GB hard drive. I'm tired of my currently wimpy system with an 800 MHz Athlon, 256MB SDRAM, and a 20GB hard drive choking on MSTS' larger routes.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-15-03 AT 08:39 PM (EDT)

Ok I downloaded everything.... I must be doing something wrong.First.. I do not have SHAPES, LO_TILES, or EnvFiles Folder.All the files from c1, c2, and c3 are the same. I assume these go into the TILES folder from 01d, and these files are the same also.Contents of the TEXTURES folder seem to be very small also.I get train world initialization failure when i try to start the route.So where did I screw up?EDIT: Added to my bitch list Jake Mensel

RE: GM&O Route Uploaded!

Thanks for a mis-load report! I am in the process of correcting this now. You will need to delete your current "D" file as it is an incorrect zip. Replace it with "D1" through "D7" when Nels gets them uploaded.The contents of each file are as follows:GMO01A = SHAPE files
GMO01B = SOUND files and TERRTEX files
GMO01C1 = Pt. 1 of 4 tile files for TILES folder
GMO01C2 = Pt. 2 of 4 tile files for TILES folder
GMO01C3 = Pt. 3 of 4 tile files for TILES folder
GMO01C4 = Pt. 4 of 4 tile files for TILES folder
GMO01D1 = Autumn Textures
GMO01D2 = Autumnsnow Textures
GMO01D3 = Night, Track, and Winter Textures
GMO01D4 = Snow textures
GMO01D5 = Spring textures
GMO01D6 = Winter textures
GMO01D7 = Wintersnow textures
GMO01E = WORLD files and TRAFFIC file (only 1 file here)
GMO01F = files which go in the root directory of the routeMy apologies and I ask that you all bear with me as this route is over 1.3 GIG and trying to get it down to a manageable size has been a MAJOR challenge. This is my first foray into this stuff....The "D" files should be available in the next 24-48 hours...Thanks for your patience!

RE: GM&O Route Uploaded!

I have thoroughly checked the zipped files here and what you got are obviously NOT complete or you did not unzip them correctly. Please look at the file sizes and report those numbers to me. I suspect that you may have lost connection or somesuch error.Otherwise, the problem took place between the mirror site and Nels Anderson who downloaded and placed them on train-sim.com....We are investigating.Can anyone else verify ATF1224's findings?JBD

JBD,I can confirm ATF1224's findings. In fact, I had to sort the zip files out...the tiles wanted to go directly into the Route folder instead of the Tiles folder. There are no Activities, Paths, Services folders.Bill

No there is nothing wrong with the zip files
gmo01f.zip-----847,216------------847,216
gmo01e.zip-----847,216------------847,216 The problem is: they are the same,
only diff. between the 2 zip files is; the f and the e
inside you'll find the same files :/
identical world files & a traffic file.
which leaves a incomplete route, which IS a problembut i'm sure it will be corrected sooner or later, so i'll wait patiently

Thank you for all input. We have the situation under control now and are in the process of getting everything fixed.There WILL be "apparent" duplicate files in some folders (texture, terrtex, and shapes) due to same file names but NOT same data. This is seasonal shapes issue. This IS normal.There will be 7 files of GMO01D_.zip coming out sometime today or tomorrow as soon as Nels can get them transferred....AGAIN: P A T I E N C E, PLEASE!jbd

Jim, please check that new 'f' file. After comparing what's in it now with what's in the 'a' file, they appear to be duplicates. KB numbers are exactly alike and so are file titles and dates.

RE: GM&O Route Uploaded!

Guys,I'm sure this route is all you say it is, but right now it is a total mess. I have wasted two nights trying to get it to run. Kip stated in the first post that, "THE COMPLETE RELEASE IS 493 MB!" The total size of the 15 current files is 360 MB. Does this mean that the erroneous "a" file is 133 MB? It doesn't add up, guys.I stated this before and it was dismissed: The files DO NOT unzip correctly. The files (tiles) in gmo01c1.zip, gmo01c2.zip, gmo01c3 and gmo01c4.zip are NOT in folders and unzip to the Route folder, not to the Route/TILES folder. (There is an exception here gmo01c4.zip does have three tiles that are properly placed in folders.At this point I am going to delete the GM&OP0 route folder a second time and chalk up another night lost.I think it best that you get these file and folder problems ironed out, dump all the previous files and start all over, because this alphabet jungle is going to cause nothing but mass confusion.Bill

I have sent a message to Jim and asked that he write Nels and have all files deleted until he can get things squared away, since he has done all the uploading.I'm not working on the uploading process, Jim is working to correct this. He is new to MSTS, and has come along way, so give him a break!Remember this is a hobby..not a life or death situation and for crying out loud..it's a FREE route! If you were paying money for it then I'd understand, but no one is (unless you order a CD from him)...so give Jim a break..OK? Let him work on this.

RE: GM&O Route Uploaded!

To answer the big question:You will need ALL of the various lettered/numbered files to get a complete download and it WILL take a VERY long time. The problems are apparently found in a download accelerator that Nels is using. We ARE working to get the proper files up on the sim site so you can resume downloading.At this time we are aware of all potential problems in unzipping and so forth and I offer THIS advice.The ROOT folder for the route is GM&OP0.All the zip files except one (the F file) have the directory structure included (names of folders). The F file goes in the route root directory. You MAY need to manually re-create the directory and folders on this release.Any missing files in the zip CAN be found in the default routes. I would strongly encourage you to have a paper and pencil ready to write down the names of any missing shape/terrain files and then copy them over from the appropriate default routes. BE SURE THAT YOU COPY FROM THE APPROPRIATE SEASON FILE AS NECESSARY! This is MISSION CRITICAL.Future releases (if any!) will hopefully be better organized however at this time it seems to be the better means to go to CD-only delivery.That's all for now. Back to work on the route files problem....

RE: GM&O Route Uploaded!

Jim,With all due respect, the gmo01c1.zip, gmo01c2.zip, gmo01c3.zip and gmo01c4.zip files do not have directory structures. Now, they may have had them when you uploaded them, but they are not there, as downloaded. As an experienced MSTS user, this is no real problem for me as I know where the files go. The readme file seems to indicate that there should be so much more and there just seems to be so many missing basic files and folders. Paul,As the Support & Testing Group Leader for another train sim group, I am trying to report what I see wrong. I realize that I do not work for your group, but when I report a problem and I'm told (twice) that it doesn't exist, one tends to get frustrated. It is obvious from the screenshots on your website that you and your team have expended blood, sweat and tears to produce a superior route for MSTS. All this hard work will be totally fruitless if no one can run the route.Bill

I was selfish and created it for myself..and then decided to share it with you all.It was not my desire to release it at all, but changed my mind and decided to offer it after I had 100 miles of track laid and tested with ALL bugs worked out.The bugs I am sorry about, but adding on to the route as Jim has, will cause some troubles running it at first, it does to anyone building a route this way, and the bugs can always be worked out (thus a "beta route" as posted) if folks are just a little more patient...P.

RE: GM&O Route Uploaded!

Remember this is a beta route, it's a work still in the early stage of development.Set up a GM&01 route folder. (I usually do this on my desktop and keep it there until I get all the needed files and then move it into the routes folder) An easy way to set up the folder is to copy the Template folder structure into it. (The Template folder is found in the Train Simulator folder. Study the structure of another route and see what types of files go in each one of the sub folders. Then check the GMO zip files and extract those files into the proper folders. If you take your time and work carefully you should get it right. From what I can figure out so far everything needed is in the file library except the gmo01a.zip which should contain the shape files but presently is a copy of the gmo01f.zip. I'm sure that will be straightend out shortly.From the screenshots I've seen it will be worth the effort and patience to get it working.I have a dial up connection so I have no choice but to be patient. With luck I'll remember that my system resets at midnight so I can interupt the download and restart GetIt so I won't have to start the download from scratch.RegardsEric

Eric,I never, ever install a route, beta or not, directly into MSTS. I use a unzip folder because I don't like unwanted surprises that may overwrite my existing files.Giving the GM&O Team the benefit of the doubt, I just downloaded the entire set of files with my download manager turned off...with exactly the same results.BTW, there are no Activities, Paths or Services folders in any of the files...these are essential to running activities promised in the readme file.I also saw some disagreement in a related thread about people not reading the readme file. For those who haven't found it, it's located in a folder named TMP in either gmo01a.zip or gmo01f.zipBill

>I also saw some disagreement in a related thread about people not reading the read-me file. For those who >haven't found it, it's located in a folder named TMP in either gmo01a.zip or gmo01f.zipYeah that is right Bill, but you know what ?
even if they found the read-me, they can't be bothered with reading it, nor a simple task like making folders, they wanna have a complete route preferable with an installer so they do not have to think at all, and thereby take the risk of damaging what little brain they have.
If this applies to the one who's reading this now; do not bother to download this route !! BETA = not ready yet
I know it would be much simpler if they just had the complete route zipped up and then made it in down-loadable blocks, in the first place
but everyone has to learn, at least these guy do bother to make a route and learn along the way.
So what ever outcome this release has (A ride-able route would be nice)
Thanks Jim - Paul - James, for the effort
do not let some no brains take away your fun.

Like this ,just to give an example, from this thread, first post;3) Using Explorer, create a directory under the Train Simulator Routes directory called GM&OP0.neat hmm? and all on my own, no wonder you're impressed.

Wow that is so cool.Did you have to memorize that? Or did you copy someone else work.I do believe that what you did. So no I'm not really impressed with you or your attempt at educating me. It's not working. I guess you need a real job outside of train simming. Something that's a little more outside of childs play.

I think it's time for everyone to take a deep breath and calm down. Nels has posted the corrected gmo01a file. It appears to have all the missing folders. I don't have time right now to install the route, but it will be the first thing I'll do after booting up tonight.I think anticipation has gotten the best of us. We've seen the screenshots and we all WANT this route.Bill

there are 4 sets of track in the track folder,
copy one set to the textures folder in gm&op0/tetures, ie USA1
there is no seperate snow set, so just copy those from the route you'v choosen , ie; usa1/textures/snow to gmo&op0/textures/snow/

First, Henk and Claude: KNOCK IT OFF. I'm not interested in wading my way through a bunch of hissy-fit messages.Now, on to other things...#1 -- It now appears that we have all of the correct files posted on the server. Go to it and let me know what problems you have running the route.#2 -- Be absolutely certain that you run the install.bat so you get all the needed files from the default routes.#3 -- I am particularly interested in reports of running out on the Air Line and through Roodhouse south to Godfrey.#4 -- I am STILL working on ways to pare down the size of the distribution file for future releases but am beginning to think that this is a real candidate for CD distribution.That's all for this morning.JBD

RE: GM&O Route Uploaded!

I got the same errors from Route Riter, Henk. I went into the directories in question and determined that the errors listed are indeed there! Do a double-check of the affected folders and I think you'll find the same circumstances.The one file we have NO idea about is the A1t500r5d.q Paul and I discussed this one and neither of us can figure out what type of file this is. It's obviously a curved track section but the suffix is questionable.The INVALID SHAPE ENTRY errors are things that neither Paul nor I can figure out. Hopefully somebody will come along that can help identify what is generating this error.I think the shape files missing errors are a problem with RouteRiter since I found the files it said were missing in the folders they were reportedly missing from.Anyway, I really want reports of errors that are encountered while running the route. Thanks for your help! It IS appreciated.I simply don't want to spend my time reading online arguments and ask that people keep that off of THIS discussion.JBD

Got the route working with no error messages at all. It is a framerate killer indeed.Some places I was down to 2 fps.It was the equivalant of watching a slide show on my machine.But what I've seen so far it's going to be a super route.Keep up the good work.Will the route have signals or is this all dark territory?

RE: GM&O Route Uploaded!

Tell me about your machine. You're going to need a really good processor to get the frame rates up.... I can get through Springfield at around 8-10 FPS on my main game system. The development system uses a 500 MHz processor and gets 1-2 FPS through there....There will not be signals until the route is completed. The inclusion of signals creates problems if you have to go back and remove or re-align track. The signals will be B&O-style color-position light signals on the CHI-STL Mainline and in a few other places. The Jack, Godfrey and KC Lines will generally use upper-quadrant semaphores with some searchlight signals in some places.JBD

I have an P3 800 mhz processor with 512 megs of ram,Windows xp,40 gig hard drive with lots of room to spare, and the old gforce2 mx 400 grahics card with 64 megs of ram. It gets the job done on most routes but this route is filled with some goodies that my machine may not be able to handle.

RE: GM&O Route Uploaded!

Hi HenkOdd - the only error I got in Route Riter was Texture file A1t500r5d.q is missing from your route Presumably the q should be an s) I think your version of Route Riter is not up to date. Mine is 3.8.53. I think the latest version alters the pointer automatically - your example of schoolbus is pointing to schoolbus.s on my system (I brought this point up with Mike Simpson a week or so ago and he issued an update). Get the update from http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/Route_Riter/As far as the weeds go have you run the weeds batch file in the root of the route? (And the deadtree batch file).As far as frame rates go even with a high end system it was crawling so just knocked the sliders down a notch which put the frame rate up to an acceptable level but the telegraph wires have now gone.Bill

What do you mean "broken paths"? The folders from the zip files or is this another problem you're reporting?All the C series files belong in the TILES folder.
All the D series files belong in the SHAPES folder.It MAY be necessary for you to manually create these sub-directories.JBD

RE: GM&O Route Uploaded!

Yep. NO signalling yet. We won't put signals in until all the trackage is in place and finalized. There IS the potential of signalling AFTER the fact but then each new release would require a complete re-install, I think....I'll ask Paul if he would reinstall the signals through Springfield and let people play with that. The B&O CPL's are very cool, IMHO...JBD

Thanks for everyone's wonderful compliments on the route. I truly appreciate it however I want to point out that the fantastic scenery and attention to detail in the Springfield area is NOT my work but the work of Paul Fowler.All I've done, to date, is add trackage west and south and get the route out for beta testing.So, PLEASE FOLKS! Give Paul the credit that is truly HIS and not mine.....BTW: We are looking for additional team members willing to take on specific projects relating to St. Louis, Kansas City, and the Chicago area. Eric
I do mine the same way. Whether it is a route, activity, or rollingstock. I seem to have better luck that way. Even if it is a .exe file I point it to MSTS from my desktop. Then all I have to do is put the folder on my desktop in the recycle bin.
After Jim got the corrected files posted I downloaded them to my desktop and put them in the folder like I was told, cut and pasted it in the routes folder of MSTS and fired that bad boy up. I had ABSOUTELY NO ERRORS
I just hope after the problems he had, Jim doesn't decide to give up.
THIS IS ONE AWESOME ROUTE.
Again thank you team GM&O. All of your time and effort are greatly appreciated. And PLEASE keep up the good work. I am looking forward to any and all future updates.Jim

Great Route!!After reading all the threads I had to try this one. NO PROBLEMS at ALL. Fired up first time. This IS a frame killer. I run an AMD 1200Ghz 1.2gb mem 2-60gb hdrives 6-8gb backup scsi's and a ATI 7500 64mb video card and only get 3-6 frames ( all switches to best ) with paintshop pro running in the background for screen shots. Looks like I need a faster system again.What I've seen so far I Like alot. If the rest of the route(s) that make up the GM&O are this good I may have to git rid of some of the others.I've seen some missing bridges and roadbed but hey this is Beta! Great Job Team GM&O!!!

Dave,Explore the route - then you can use any default engine or consist you have. You know the boxs on the right Engine, consist, time, season, weather, starting at, going to. Opening screen for the route after it's loaded. That's how I managed to leave the track at 91mph with 4 dd40x's and 75 loaded autoracks!
