RE: pro train

I have both Pro Train 1 and 2, and living in the US, I am very happy with my purchase. They were done early on in MSTS, so it could be better, but it is still very nicely done, considering how long both routes are.Now if you are referring to Pro Train 3, where can you buy it at? Pro Train and German Railroads are both safe names to buy, you won't regret it.Chris Bogley

RE: pro train

I have ProTrain 2, which was bought at the same time as Train Simulator as a Christmas present - ProTrain 2 is the only add-on I've seen in the stores here in my part of Ontario, Canada.I don't run it very often for these reasons. 1) It's a bit harder on computer resources than the defualt routes. Since my computer is somewhat underpowered for Train Sim (not much above the minimum specs for the software) that is a significant factor for enjoyably workable performance.2) I tend to spend a lot of my train sim time using the Explore Route activity. That means that I'm choosing my trains from the Locomomtive list and the consist list in the User Interface. With Pro-Train 2 all the consists are described in German, which is a language I don't know. That means that I'm not at all sure of what I'm going to get, and while sometimes I don't mind getting a surprise package (it can be fun on occassion), I'm more often wishing I did understand the descriptions. Since there are quite a lot of locomotives, with quite a few consits for each one, that is a lot of consits to try to experiment with to try to learn what they actually are.3) The electric locomotives have a very unpleasant "screechy" sound, which is especialy the case when in cab view - my most frequently used view. I don't know whether or not this sound is prototypicaly correct or not. If it is prototypicaly correct, then that represents good modeling. Never the less, it's very unpleasant and is one of the reasons I don't use ProTrain much.
I have seen some good reviews for ProTrain 2 on the web, and a recent release of ProTrain 3 also got a good review. I didn't see any mention of the points I raised above on the ProTrain 2 reviews I've seen, but that doesn't invalidate my reactions - it simply means those factors didn't bother the reviewer.
Cheers
John

RE: pro train

pro train 1 and 2 were both excellent. The latter has 60 activities, well mine has anyway, but I may have done a few myself. protrain1 and 2 both have double tracks, so activities are easy to create. German railroads vol1 is also a good route, but there is a lot of single track there. Lots of activities included. While I will download or buy any decent route, there is almost too much at the moment. The Ohio route, NEC4, Eastmidlands route, Carlisle and Settle1930, plus Protrain3 and germain railroads2. I have 4 other routes dowloaded with no time to install!MSTS2 is scheduled for November, so that makes a whole new set of routes available. It is time to get Picky with what we use!David

judging from my own trainspotting experience I can assure you that the electrics from PT2 do indeed sound very much like the originals. You won't be hearing very much of the actual traction motors on the classes 101, 112 and 143 - much less than on the older types, such as the 110 and 140 series as represented in GR2 - , because they are largely being drowned out by the transformer and rectifier blowers. This is especially true of the 101 and most of the other advanced types such as the 145, 152, 182 and 185 (available as freeware from German TS sites), which carry a large amount of modern traction control equipment and thus need a lot of cooling.

RE: pro train

Hi,Pro Train 1 is nice to play with and has a lot of passenger activities. Unfortunately, for germans, the routes or better say the tracks building that routes are as close to prototype as tinplate models Roman

RE: pro train

You have taste, my friend! The ‘Pro Train’ series is probably the best series in the commercial side of add-ons (e.g. the add-ons that you buy in shops or from online stores).Graphics are superbly detailed, lots of activities are included, especially on ‘Pro Train 2’ there are about 30!The only thing I’d say is to make sure you have at least 128MB of RAM and a good processor. In this order, this is what I think you should consider:1. Pro Train 2 (Leipzig-Dresden)
2. Pro Train 3 (Stuttgart-Munich)
3. Pro Train Weltkulturer Semmering Bahn (Semmering Railroad in Austria)
4. Pro Train (Cologne-Frankfurt)If you’re into high speed express trains, then Pro Train 2 and 3 are the ones for you. They do also both have S-Bahn systems, which are local trains serving each of the main cities listed on the box.Pro Train Weltkulturer Semmering Bahn is a detailed copy of the UNESCO protected railroad in Austria. It’s a beautiful, mountainous route, full of fantastic scenery and viaducts. If you’re more into the winding, slow to fast rail action, this is the one for you. What I’d say about Pro Train (or Pro Train 1, as it’s the first in the series) is that it’s not a bad add-on, it’s very good. But it was the first add-on done by the Bluesky team (the guys who develop the Pro Train series) and it was done at a time when add-ons were only first being developed. So, therefore the graphics aren’t as detailed or polished as the later versions, like 2, 3 and Semmering. The outstanding quality of PT 2, 3 and Semmering have actually made the first Pro Train look bad, which is rather unfair as it has a lot to offer.Another good thing is that Bluesky are bringing out an Activity Pack in June for PT 2, 3 and Semmering Bahn. So with that you can add on much more activities to the existing ones that came with the original product. I hope this helped you. Let us know if you decided to go for one of the Pro Train series, and what you thought of it.Regards,
JAY

RE: pro train

In addition, Pro Train are about to release the Tauernbahn add-on (featuring the route between Salzburg and Villach in Austria) this summer, and the Karwendelbahn from Munich to Innsbruck by the end of this year. This should keep you busy for at least a few weeks if you should go for the entire series .

RE: pro train

Be careful on ProTrain 3 though. I'm lucky my dad just bought the latest and greatest machine on the market otherwise mine couldn't take it - it's lovely to have great scenery but if you're in the 1 - 1.5ghz range or under, the frame rates you get won't do it justice - and the scenery won't be there half the time due to the lack of resources.
