Jul-29-01, 09:46 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Train Simulator won't start" This has been a problem since the game was released here in the US, and you will find hundreds of suggestions if you read through the past posts on this board. It is a very complex question, and what works for one person will not always work for another. Here is a "quick fix" that worked for me, and a number of others:1. Launch Train Sim Troubleshooter from the "Start" button on your desktop, not the Train Sim icon. The path is "Start/Programs/Microsoft Games/Train Sim/Train Sim Troubleshooting."2. A box will open in the center of the screen. Click on "Troubleshooting".3. A list of possible problems will be displayed. Check off the boxes marked "Skip texture size limit test" and "Skip pixel behaviour test". If your list is in a different language, they are the sixth and seventh boxes from the top. Click on "OK" and back out of the menus. Then see if the game will run. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-31-01, 11:11 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Train Simulator won't start" Have you tried the old trick of reducing the Graphics Accelerator? This has worked for me on a number of games in the past. Simply click on the Graphics tab (My Computer/Control Panel/System/Performance/Graphics) and reduce the setting to zero, then reboot. If the game works, try increasing the setting slightly .Hope you are soon on track!

Jul-31-01, 01:16 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Train Simulator won't start" I have had a few problems with Win ME and gamesnamley Rollercoaster Tycoon (with Loopy Landscapes only) BUT ONLY WITH DX8 in ME no problem with DX7 and MSTSTHe solution for RCTLL was to put on the Win 2000 patchhowever with MSTS I found the only solution to be installing the DX8 drivers for my graphics card.If you have a game that refuses to work with DX8 make sure you are using DX8 drivers rather than DX7, the problem allways occured (for me) when trying to run the pre-game cinematics (title screns) however with the games all being proprietry software I don't know if my problem was with the cinematics loading or pre-game tests. of course I don't quite understand the error messages either. PS: My Graphics card is based on the SiS 300 chip Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-02-01, 03:15 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Train Simulator won't start" HAven't had a problem with the KT133 chip set but I seee yours is a P3 board.Could try updating the 3 in 1 drivers anyway.Looks like you are having a problem with a DLL rather than the game EXE.Name would suggest something to to with the help system. Aug-02-01, 04:38 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Train Simulator won't start" For the p3v4x board it's not a bad idea if you install the via 4-in-1 drivers. I have a p3v4x with an asusv7100 geforce 2mx. with the via drivers and detonator 12.41 the game runs smooth I think... avg of 25fps... take into consideration that my cpu is a pIII-600 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-02-01, 05:03 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Train Simulator won't start" ........thks for your suggestions.....unfortunately I am getting the same error message (...invalid page..) even after having updated the 4-in-1 VIA drivers 4.32vI guess as well that there must be something wrong with the help module (TSMVHLP.DLL in 0177:1003b7f3) but really no idea about how to solve it.......I have uninstalled and reinstalled at least 10 times after scan disk and defrag (both on the C: and D: disks)...no wayI am afraid I have to sell this game.......ciao Stefano Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-02-01, 11:03 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Train Simulator won't start" Its funny you mention the help file. While playing with some of the files to see I can find some reason why this damn game wont run, I noticed that when I click on the help file I get an error message. I have no idea if this is related to the BLACK SCREEN problem. All I can say is based on all the problem with this first release you would figure Microsoft would have come out with a patch already. Oh well...There I go thinking again.....How about a case of beer to the first person that solves this BLACK SCREEN issue...... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-21-01, 05:11 AM (EST) 11. "RE: Train Simulator won't start" I also have the black screen problem. I was looking forward
to driving the trains and the screen shots on the microsoft website looked so cool!. I am running windows 98 SE, nvidia vanta 16mb graphics card, 64 mb ram, celeron 466 and I have plenty of harddrive space 10 gig, and I have direct x 8 installed. when I click on the train sim icon I simply get a black screen. I have tried all the fixes suggested on the microsoft support site to no avail - changing graphics acceleration, selecting various boxes in the troubleshooter.looks like I will have to find a new home for this game. Heres a last ditch attempt for all those who cant get the game running because of black screen errors or lockups. This soloution worked or me on MS-Combat sim.Simply go into your system bios and reduce your CPU speed by about a third, reboot and see if the game runs. If it does, fine. Now try increasing your CPU speed by stages until you get as close to your original setting without problems.
