Okay... This is my first repaint. I repainted Justin Cornell's BNSF Dash 9 model into BNSF 4723, the MSTS Dash 9. I got the MSTS decals from the texture download on the Microsoft website. I also made a few improvements to Justin's original texture, including a GE builder's decal on the cab, some warning and instruction decals on the hood, access panels on the cab, and (not shown) instruction text on the hood roof to just behind the cab, and the BNSF logo and road numbers on the back of the hood. For extra detail, I also added a small green square above the MSTS decal, as this wrong-color touchoup exists on the real engine. Any questions or comments?
P.S. I used this engine to replace the default MSTS Dash 9 model, which doesn't even resemble a real Dash 9.

Replacement Dash 9 update

LAST EDITED ON Feb-20-03 AT 11:00 AM (EDT)

I'll upload it as soon as I get the chance, and for those of you who do not like the MSTS decal, I'll make a version that doesn't have one. I'll also have to make and "upload version" of both variants, as I aliased this loco's cab to the NALW Dash 9 cab from their GE megapack 2, so for compatibility's sake, the upload version will have the default Dash 9 cab. There are a few other issues I want to address. First of all, when I replaced the default Dash 9, the loco type for Dash 9 activities regestered as "unknown", although the activity itself seemed unaffected, and AI trains with this loco ran normally. This engine also includes Bob Boudoin's v4.5 physics, and has a head-out view available.
I'll try to upload it before the end of the week, but no promises. I'm quite busy lately, and my only repainting tools are TGAtool2 and MS Paint, so these things take time with me. One last item. I'd appreciate some input as to wheather I should upload this as a replacement for the default Dash 9, or as a separate loco.P.S. my future projects include a BNSF AC4400 3-pack, and a BNSF GP38-2 wearing the BN Green-black-white scheme.Jon N,

RE: Replacement Dash 9 update

One of the locomotive ID lines in the .eng file was in uppercase letters when it should have been lowercase, due to an slight error of mine when modifying this file (I originally had Justin Cornell's Dash 9 #4764 as a seperate engine from the default Dash 9). Returning the line to lowercase fixed the problem, although I don't know why the wagon ID lines in consist files should be case sensitive.

I'm now done updating this engine, so it should be available by the weekend. I have also made an alternate texture in case you don't want the MSTS decal on the nose. Before I upload it,I have one question: Do I have to get permission from Justin Cornell before uploading this engine, or is simply giving him proper credit sufficent? (I have no intention of infringing on anyone's copyrights, and I dont want to be accused of it either.)JonN,

Jon ... I love the new loco. I'm curious, what did you use to rework the textures. Did you use layers or repaint the original texture?I'm just starting to fiddle with the Beta PSP8 and I'd like to experiement (carefully) with your model.Where did you get the information about the location of all the warning decals ... it is quite accurate.krswen

I used MS Paint and a freeware utility called TGAtool 2 to modify the existing texture. If you want a copy of TGAtool 2, you can get it at this webpage: http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/train/tgatool2.htm
This utility lets you see the the actual texture, which is basically a 24-bit Bitmap image, and its accomanying 8-bit aplha channel, which is an overlay image that controls the opacity of different areas of the texture. Double clicking on either of these images will send it to the image editor of your choice. TGAtool 2 is quite buggy though, so consider yourself warned.
Now for your question about the warning decals. I simply referred to photos of the prototype as I applied these decals. Anyone who wants to make textures for BNSF locos should refer to this site, http://www.bnsfpix.com. They have thousands of high resolution photos of BNSF locomotives. The site is currently under renovation, so to get to the "pre-renovation" photos, use this link: http://bnsfpix.com/OLD. Once in, go to "roster". You should know what to do from there.
P.S. You may already know, but before attemting to modify a texture, you should back it up in case you screw up. I learned this lesson the hard way. Last item: The textures for my loco update are "US2Dsh9.ace" and "US2Dsh92.ace", NOT "US2Dash9.ace" and "US2Dash92.ace" The latter two files are holdovers from the now-gone default Dash 9, and can be deleted.
