I have had lot of fun with Mp3.1, and those improved Crossings.. But still. There are some stupidness on Msts Crssings. I laughed a lot, when i first uncoupled loco on wagons in middle of RR, car's started to play Kitt, and drove trough cars. So, i backed up, and connected my loco back to wagons, gates started to land, and car's stopped behind them. Then i Tried following: Drove little bit forward, and dropped out cople of wagons on rr, then cars on the road waited some time, then they got tired of waiting and started to drive again trough of wagons.Secondly, what is pretty fun too, i drove my train near rr, and stopped, when gates had landed, and started to drive forward again. But my train slipped a little bit backward, and gates raised up. So i continued to drive Fw, and waited when gates would land again, and drove and drove, and gates landed just before loco was middle of rr.So, what is wrong in msts? My friend told me that if there is two tracks on rr, but theyre not close, other sides gates wont land down, and cars drive trough moving train =)Is there any way to correct that problem? Or has there already patch for that?Regard's

<<Ty, Future Norfolk & Western engineer. (I'm only 11)>> Well, you're gonna have to learn quite a bit more about Railroads before you can be an engineer, because if you even had a general knowledge of the Norfolk & Western railroad, you'd know that they have been gone since 1980!

Its Norfolk Southern, not Norfolk & Southern, and for the record Southern RR and Norfolk & Western RR Merged in 1981 to Norfolk Southern Corp. I hope this clears up things.

RE: Msts RR crossings

I've noticed some intersting things also with level crossings. Some of my peculiarities may lie with my computer, which is somewhat underpowered for TrainSim, so I have most of the sliders well back. However, I have seen some things on the default Settle-Carlisle route which are definitately not right.1) The level crossing gates are turned right back along the sides of the road, not across the road. I'm old enough to remember when these were the normal gates in U.K., before the modern drop gates came into use. The old-style gates where designed and installed so that they either closed the railway track off from the road (tracks where always fenced), or when in position for trains to pass, they closed across the road to prevent vehicles or pedestrians from getting onto the railway.2) When using one of the external views I can hear alarm bells ringing, very similar to those used in N. America, just as I do when using the default Marias Pass route. When running the Shinjuku-Hakone route, I also hear the alarm bells, but they have a distinctly different sound. The English level crossings of my memory didn't have bells or any other alarm sound - they didn't need them since the gate where operated manually by an attendant on the spot.CheersJohn (I grew up in England, but have lived in Canada for over 35 years).

RE: Msts RR crossings

SO in U.S is now gates, that stop's traffic on hole road+ Unlike herein finland you can drive around gates, even they are down. MAny peoples had died under train like that, and only thing, why in here is no gates, what shuts down hole road, and ypu cant go around of them is, that you can get stuck between gates.. =DI hope that you understand what i am trying to explain (in finnish this would be loot easier to me )Mp 3.1 is lot of fun, it is lot better than one what was shipped eith game. But still i wonder why in the el.. um.. earth... msts and kuju messed up with original Mp:s gates, some of them does not work at all, and one works wice versa =) SO when train is in crossing, gates would "climp up"

RE: Msts RR crossings

The gates on either side of a RR crossing in MSTS are independent of each other. If you look in the route editor, you will see two sets of orange cubes, with each set roughly aligned with the car spawner trace (the flashing blue and white line). That set of orange blocks controls the cars on tht particular spawner. Each instance of a crossing has some parameters associated with it that dictate when the gate activates. If I remember correctly, there is an early warning phase (which stops the cars) then a later phase that drops the gates. There is also a calculation that figures out how far the train is from the crossing and starts the gate sequence such that the gates are down x seconds before you reach the crossing. This will vary based on your speed. If you crawl up to the gate, the other values will take precidence.Where you see one gate go down, but not the other, you have managed to get the train inbetween the zones for each of the two gates. Continue just a bit further and the other one will come down too.As for the UK gates...there are two problems. The animation of the gate is backwards and is fixed in the file UKCross.zip. This fix puts the gate in the correct position relative to the approaching train (open or closed). However, at least on S&C, the gates were also placed incorrectly. As such, the gate will "open" back towards the cars instead of across the track. If the gate was moved to the opposite side of the crossing, it would act correctly, opening across the tracks (assuming you put in the UKCross.zip fix).Bob Siederer

LAST EDITED ON Feb-18-03 AT 08:14 AM (EDT)

Thanks for the info on the UK level crossing gates, I'll look for the file next time I'm in the file library.I'm not sure I want to get into route editing just yet - though that time will come (I have a couple of ideas for route projects when I'm ready - one simple and the other complicated). Is there any way to silence the alarm bell on the default S&C route? They are definately wrong, and the fact that I hear different alarms on the Japanese routes from those I here on default MP suggests that it should be programable. At present I'm only running the default routes plus the Pro Train 2 add on (it was included in the Christmas present which provided me with Train Sim). Down loading large files can be problematic for me with a dialup connection which is often not very fast (rural area).CheersJohn
