Currently trying to get this loco to function. It requires the 3DTrains F7 Demo (have both copies ATSF and PENN). You are to copy the demo files into a new folder called "CP 1401" then unzip cp1401.zip into this file. Bak in the activity editor, picture comes up as the ATSF version and a popup says " Unable to open shapefile "..CP1401\CP1401.s". I'm assuming that the demo shapefile has to be renamed to CP1401. However, it still shows up in the AE as the ATSF version. Obviously missed something or made a mistake somewhere. If you've been successful in getting this to work, could you post here how it was accomplished. Thank you in advance. PW

RE: F7 CP 1401

When you unzip the new loco into the new folder make sure that the option to overwrite existing files is checked, and also ensure that the files you copied over to the new folder are not read only.mervyn@madasafish.com

RE: F7 CP 1401

Thanks, I was fully expecting to be prompted to overwrite. That did not happen. There are two Eng files and two SD files within the folder. I thought renaming the F7A.s file to CP1401 would help, but no joy. But I see Kevarc has sent some new methodology to try, so we'll give that ago and see what happens.

RE: F7 CP 1401

This is how I did it for another, just substitute the corect names.1. First line Wagon ( GP9 TO Wagon ( GP9PRR
2. after the engine sound line Engine ( GP9 ) TO Engine ( GP9PRR )
3. Another Wagon after the exhaust definition
Wagon ( GP9 ) TO Wagon ( GP9PRR )
4. The name line right before the description
Name ( GP9 ) TO Name ( GP9PRR )
5. Between the light section and the effects section
Engine ( GP9PRR

RE: F7 CP 1401

Thanks, Kevarc, this holds out promise for other "old engines" that I'm struggling with also. Lately I have been going back to the very first files from the library. Some have readmes that are far more challenging than any of the new stuff today, which are very easy to deal with, in comparison. Just got home from a double shift, so I will wait till this P.M. before starting this. Will let you know how it went. Many thanks again!

RE: F7 CP 1401

Hi Paul1953you may also want to note that there have been several versions of 3D-Trains Demo F7's. We currently stand at version 3.x. Earlier versions had different shape files - calling also for different names and sorts of ace files, so older download are definitely incompatible with the current demo shape file. From having a quick - I repeat quick - glance at the file in the library, I can definitly tell you that it needs one of the earlier demo versions (but can't tell you by heart whether it is v1.x or v2.x).Some other older downloads do contain the needed shape file, I suggest you have a look at some other downloads of the same time period - using the "view" option of the file library. You should try to see that you find one
a) that calls for exactly the same names of .ace files,
b) but also contains a matching .s file (whatever it's name). You then move that .s file to the CP1401 folder, and rename it accordingly (should be cp1401.s with 99% probability, given the respective .sd files name being cp1401.sd) - you can also detect the correct name for the .s when you open the .eng file with wordpad and look for the line "WagonShape ( )"Btw: Looks like a nice paint scheme, guess I have to go back and download it, despite it being an old version.Lukas a.k.a Swissie

RE: F7 CP 1401

Hi Lukas, thanks for the info. Yes I'm using the F7 demo from 2001, and am attempting to get several f7s up and running. Also have the newer demos as well, but being careful not to confuse them. This loco and others by K. Boudreaux beat me up last winter, so now I figured with 12 months of new knowledge and experience, it was time to try them again ( theres a heavily weathered SP F7a+b, that gives me fits!LOL!). Appreciate all the help given here, patience and perserverance is the key. Thanks again.

RE: F7 CP 1401

OK here's the deal. The instuctions for the Cp1401 say: Install the default 3Dtrains F7a as per instructions. Create a new file named CP1401 and copy all the files from the 3DTrains folder to this new one(CP1401). Then unzip CP1401 to this new CP1401 folder in your trainset folder. Create a consist and go nuts! Paraphrasing, of course. Now I have a folder containing one .s file(F7A), two SD(F7A and CP1401) and two eng files(F7A and CP1401)that independently call for completely different cab/sound files(!) and a whole slew of F7A and F7APh1 ace files. The cab/sound files, I can edit no problem. But in the AE the CP 1401 still shows up as the 3Dtrains version, despite having renamed the .s file to CP1401.Attempt #12 coming up!

Hi Paul,> Now I have a folder containing one .s file(F7A), two SD(F7A and CP1401) and two eng files(F7A and CP1401)
> that independently call for completely different cab/sound files(!)I think that is the core of your problems. Get rid of the F7A.eng and F7A.sd files. You should only have CP1401.eng
CP1401.s
CP1401.sd
all the .ace files
a Cabview folder, containing an aliased cabview called F7A.cvf
a Sound folder containing two sms files called F7Aeng.sms and F7Acab.sms, aliased to some other sound source. Find an appropriate Cabview and Sound folder with any other F7 in your collection, copy it over to CP1401, rename the files correctly, and then it should be available for consist building. At least it did with meLukas a.k.a Swissie

RE: F7 CP 1401

Hi Lukas , appreciate your efforts. Great screenshot, too. Still no joy. Started from scratch as per the directions, eliminated the F7Aeng and sd files, renamed F7A.s to CP1401.s, installed cab and sound after making the appropriate changes to CP1401eng, and still didn't get it. Got the SF loco again. My Kingdom for a self-installer! I'm not about to give up as the goal is not the CP1401, but those heavily weathered KCS F7A+B units. which use the same methods as the CP1401.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-18-03 AT 04:31 AM (EDT)

Hi Paul, ehm, just an idea: Could it, per chance, be that in all this process of copying, installing, renaming and moving things around you inadvertedly overwrote the CP livery .ace files with the SF ones? The fact that the engine is displayed in the Activity Editor without causing an error, but just wearing the "wrong coat", would hint that you installed everything fine, as far as .eng, .sd and .s is concerned! And if you can even run it in MSTS (albeit in the wrong colors), then also your Cabview and Sounds installations are watertight.I suggest you just unzip the download again, best into a temporary folder, and move the ace's over to CP1401 again. I cross my fingers, hoping that is the cure for your CP1401. Otherwise, I can zip up mine and send it to you by e-mail, so that you can compare where there are differences.Lukas a.k.a Swissie

RE: F7 CP 1401

You know, I was thinking the same thing for a while now. But I'm not sure which ace file is responsible. I'll Try from scratch again and move the CP1401 files in first, then the 3DT files individually and see what happens. Not giving up yet. Thanks again,Lukas.

RE: F7 CP 1401

Download the classic 1955 Canadian, its updated and does not use the 3D Trains F units, but rather the TA ones, and includes 1400, 1900 (B unit) and 1401, all in a much better paint job than the originals..
I did not have permission to re-dist the original shape files, in the version you are having trouble wit. If you don't want the entiore trainset, and only CP1401, email me, and I'll send you the newer CP1401, as a standalone...Another thing, if you are having problmes with any of my stuff, just email, I usually try to answer the same day I get requests for help..Cheers

Hi Harold, thanks for your kind offers, as you can see from the above, there's some great info being passed about.Somehow, with it all, this exercise will be completed with positive results. I like to learn new things, and anyone who has spent anytime on the sim knows there's a lot to learn. Still, I did have my eye on the "Canadian"...

For Lukas, Harold and everyone whose help and interest in this post contributed to the final result. To Lukas , thanks for sending the file. After making the comparisons, I am humbled to discover that all those files moved from the 3DT folder to the CP1401, were not required. The .s file, copied and renamed, was all that was needed."...forest for the trees". Thanks also to Harold for the fine model, and to M. Boudreaux for the repaint. Now I'm going after the KCS stock, with a vengence! Below I present the CP1401 (&1900)
