I downloaded this route and found it to be the best of all of the MSTS routes. The scenery and track layout is unbelievable. The activities have lots of other trains running. I really recommend this route to anyone who has not tried it!

Except it is not a route as such, more a model railway sim. And I like it as well funnily enough. I must admit I dont have it installed at the moment, as I am desperate to get rid of as many consists as possible. This route and the weird Island route (forgotten the name), are the ones to get if u like that sort of thing. The best fictional route is the Bodiddley (ohio) route, but then everyone knows that.David

>The best fictional route is the Bodiddley (ohio) route, but then >everyone knows that. Nope, Sorry Have to disagree with you on that, The best Fictional route title belongs to the the Full Bucket Line, v 2.0, with ohio as a close second, followed by PO&N (I'll be able to experience PO&N in all her glory soon.. )Port Ogden & Northern – a – image 3

RE: Port Ogden & Northern--a

I might as well chime in here. I have to put Kip's Hoodoo Pass Route, Robert's ADFRR, and Wolfgang's Dogskill right up there in a 3 way tie. Each is unique in the way they were done, and all 3 leave you wanting more at the end. I have not had a change to run PO&N6 yet, it is one my list of things to do when I get home in March. By the looks of the map Otto provided, and the many screens I have seen, I don't doubt that a 4 way tie may occur. Version 5 still wowed me every time i ran it, and I look forward to the same from version 6.

RE: Port Ogden & Northern--a

Your dead right benmcp, could not agree with you more.I have a few routes installed now and this Jim Ward's PO&N is just tops. I am a retired railwayman these days and did years of shunting (switching) and this Route (or layout as some prefer to call it) is a right work of art. I think fictional routes are far better, as your expectation of an actual real route is too demanding. I have found no routes that is really as busy right from the very start, trains going everywhere. (fantastic) I changed the heavy and light activities and headed them with the two K36's (beautiful engines) and one thing I liked about this route with its activities you can virtually go where you like, with dire consequences sometimes, but great fun. If there was a vote for the most interesting and well done route, this PO&N would be tops for so much is going on. How this was all fathomed out must have been heaps of hard work over a long time.If you not into shunting (switching) and you like sitting in engines on long BORING trips, passing an odd train or two, then do not download this route. For those who do use this Route, try using Heavy Anderson activity and go to the opposite end of the yard and start marshalling every type wagon there is all together from both sides of the yard into one string on one line. Watch out for the trains coming both ways. You have to be in clear before they rock up, and they come thick and fast. This will challenge you for next 2 weeks. I had great fun doing it. Oh BTW is not actual part of the activity either. Just reminded me of those good ol days when marshalling huge station to station roadside trains was a real work of art for when shunter's were shunter's (switchers) and you had to dodge around and not delay the main line trains and still get your trains out on time.My opportunity here to say "Great Route Jim, top marks in my book".Port Ogden & Northern – a – image 6

There's a rumor that Jim is working for Kuju but nobody can confirm it.I vote for Sea View 2 as the best fantasy or ficticious route. I thought Ohio Rail (Bodidly) was a prototype route. It doesn't matter, I like it anyway!Cal Rasmussen

RE: Port Ogden & Northern--a

Heya Cal,I thought Jim was back posting when I saw this thread and took an interest; turns out its about his route. Normally I don't get involved with who likes what with everyone having a million different reasons for what they like but to clarify this...Ohio Rail is half and half prototype. Personally none of these guys have convinced me they've done a prototype route to any extent I think you could call a route a prototypical. Basically the consensus is based on if trackwork follows some semblance as much as the markers or limited track sections will allow and that is what qualifies as 'prototype.' But that doesn't take into account altitudes, towns or landmarks, or even if the switches are in their proper place or not. There's just no way to get even close enough to the real thing in my opinion to say one route is prototypical over another where an attempt to model prototype has been made. We get approximations is about how close we can get. The Ohio Rail has a number of parts to it which are replications of the real thing. Some of the town locations are just where they should be. Some of the track is right on with its real or historical counterpart. But I fictionalized the route by adding industries and branchlines and even a whole town to give the route operationability beyond what was there. To me, all our routes based on prototype are fictionalized to whatever degree of intent we can get away with.Rich Garber

Rich, I hear what you're saying. Columbia Gorge is a "prototype" route. My intent is to try convey the look and appearance and "feal" of the Columbia River. There are some non prototypical elements and at least one purely fictional element. I am not going to say what that is. I want to see how long it takes people to find it. It was created to fill a need.I haven't had time to explore all of Ohio Rail. What I've seen so far is great. I hope I get it all explored before the next version comes out.Cal Rasmussen

LAST EDITED ON Feb-13-03 AT 05:41 PM (EDT)

Spoke with Jim and his son Mike Wednesday AM (2-12-03)in the grocery store. His machine was wiped out by a massive power surge which even destroyed his surge protector. He is in the process of repair/rebuilding! BTW, Jim said that he is NOT working on a KUJU project!

RE: Port Ogden & Northern--a

Port Ogden and Northern is a great route but I find myself using Ohio Rail more because: 1. The great (switch) maps. 2. Many more downloadable activities.

RE: Port Ogden & Northern--a

I think most of us have all we want now. There are routes to suit everyone, whatever their preferences. I prefer long activities, mostly passenger, mostly steam, and now I can create activities and consists, I am in train heaven! When I started, I used simple controls and default stuff only, but have gradually learnt a lot of the other stuff. In a way, its best to learn gradually, as fools rush in, and have to reinstall MSTS many times! There have been a lot of people who have helped here, and I personally thank them all.David

RE: Port Ogden & Northern--a

I think you hit the nail on the head David. There's already nearly FORTY freeware routes available from this source alone. Plus, there's the payware routes, and the routes available through European sources.According the list in the Route Building forum, there's almost another EIGHTY routes being built that's associated with this forum!Just about any theme is or will be available.Truly amazing.Andre Ming
