I have a route that is referring a consist I renamed (because of my obsessive-compulsiveness) and now the route won't load because of a missing consist. But Route Control, Route_Riter, and ConBuilder all insist there are zero errors present. And using something like UniSearch, I could find no reference of the (now) missing consist in any of the files in the route folder. On a related note, how is the default consist for the EXPLORE activity selected? Are these related? Thanks.

RE: Default Consist?

Hi Chris,I am glad to see someone else does it too. RouteRiter can tell you about files not referenced, the consist should show up on that screen.I have a unicode searching tool, I use that to find the activity that is calling the missing consist.Derek

RE: Default Consist?

I had this happen (for the same reason) with pretty much the same result. In the end, I made a one car consist and gave it the name of the missing one until I could actually find the ref and kill it.Brad Meyer

RE: Default Consist?

Hi Bozoman, although all three programs insist on no error being present, one must hide somewhere. You may dare to do a "manual" inspection of selected areas: I would expect the reference to the culprit to be left either in- an activity file, or
- a service file.(see respective folders - btw. both types of files can be opened with WordPad if you do a manual check, search for train_config)Furthermore, traffic pattern files (also accessible via WordPad) make references to service files, listing the service name plus their departure time in decimal format (# of seconds from midnight), but not the train consist. You might have to check out these references also...If you cannot find the culprit anywhere in there, I have no clue for now. Re proposed default consist in explore: I noticed that once you have no activity saved with a route, the game just leaves a blank in the "select engine" field when you are in explore mode. Therefore I assume the default consist is drawn from one of the activities of the route in question. Lukas a.k.a Swissie

RE: Default Consist?

May I join the club of "Compulsive" changers ? Have the same blank "Select Loco" line in my TEST Route for the same reason as Swissie. No bother, I just pick another from Locos/Consists Drop-Down Menu.Going back to the original question, having been told by MSTS that there is something missing, clearly stating where and what it is looking for, doing a FILE SEARCH should find it if it exists. If not then I too create a DUMMY to shut MSTS up, rather than wasting a lot of time figuring what is wrong ! RE: Default Consist?

You say you checked it with Route Riter but did you look at the screen for unused consists and services? It won't be an activity that is causing the problem otherwise and error would show. However a service that was left in will cause the problem.Try 'Check all activities' and the screen should come up where one of the buttons at the bottom is 'Unused services and consists'. Might even be a good time to start thinning out the consists if you have too many. You don't need to delete them - just highlight them in the box, right click and select 'move' and it will place them in a subfolder of Consists called 'spare consists'.Do the same with services and traffic.Bill

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't think to look in traffic files, and I did by hand after they were mentioned. The rest, I did do as I said.I did finally find it, though! Just as if you rename .s files you have to make the "header" consistent on the first line of the new file's contents, you do with .con files. And usually I do a good job, but I missed this one. Why is there no consistency check in any of our tools for this? ConBuilder seems a likely place...
