Hi once morejust wanted to direct you to a new electric freight loco I just got from a different site - thought that some folks might love to know about it here too.
A treat for lovers of electric freight locos – image 1Just ran two (individually numbered) units of this powerful loco, model by J.Y.Canoville (released 26/01/2003) over my old USA2 which I "electrified". The prototype was used by Swiss BLS, a railroad based in the Bernese region (near Switzerlands capital) over Loetschberg pass. With there 8000 HP, they pull(ed) 900 metric ton consists up the 2.7% grade at 75 kph/50 mph. Two still survive as back-ups today, to my knowledge. They were converted in 1959 by permanently joining two four-axled passenger locos originally built in 1944:A treat for lovers of electric freight locos – image 2Btw: Some of these were left in their original state and still do local and express trains today, at the age of 59...Both downloads available at www.thetrain.deLukas a.k.a Swissie

Though to be fair to Kuju, the height the wire is set at is down to the user and is modifiable on a per route basis.M.

RE: a treat for lovers of electric freight locos

Hi,That is a typical non solution!
In reality, the wire height is not fixed. I varies from (very) low under viaducts, bridges, overpasses and in tunnels to normal height on free tracks.
What we need are pantographs that can follow the wire, up and down. And of course wire that vary in height. Now on some routes the wire is running through a viaduct. The second thing is that many loco builders use different panto heights. So setting the wire height in the route properties may solve the problem for one loco but causes it for an other one. BTW great loco's. I like them very much. I have see them in action when I was on holidays in Switzerland, one of my favourite holiday countries.Dick van den HovenA treat for lovers of electric freight locos – image 5

RE: a treat for lovers of electric freight locos

Yes, you're right, there is that I guess, and it would be quite nice to watch the wire sink slightly as you enter a tunnel and rise back to normal height as you exit.

Hi Otto,> Still any "Crocodiles" in Service ?"Crocodiles": Not with any of the main lines / standard gauge. But I just saw one hauling regular freight out of Chur on the narrow-gauge RhB last Thursday (#412, if I remember correctly). With the Ski World Championships currently on in St.Moritz, and many supplemental trains dispatched on weekends, the RhB sent out practically all of it's motive stock and cars to work the lines, including the "Salon Pullman" Coaches of the 1920's, Philippe Starck's Designer car, motorcar 501 of 1939, three coaches with open plattforms usually restricted to the occasional steam train, and obviously even a "Rhetian Crocodile". Last Staurday was crazy: I've never seen such an amount of their historic stock helping to work their revenue trains! Lukas a.k.a Swissie

Hi shieldsy ...and thanks for the tip with the shine! The operator BLS is reknown for its policy of maintaining its stock in clean, mint condition, whenever possible - sometimes a little difficult in winters, on a mountain route. Lukas a.k.a Swissie

Talk about the Swiss and their sense of Cleanliness ! I remember when working in Buchs back in 1955, they had people
sweeping up droppings from cows in the streets, the Mooos being taken up into the mountain pastures early mornings.I can still hear the loud sound of the Cow Bells waking me up every day !Below is another example. It's part of the now oil-fired pre-1900 Steam Engine of the Paddle Steamer accross Lake
Luzern (Vierwaldstättersee), this being the start of the Wilhelm Tell Express to Lugano in Italy. Bus accross to
Tirano for the journey back into Switzerland over the Bernina Pass.O t t oA treat for lovers of electric freight locos – image 13

You want heavy-haulage electrics?
Then do what I did over six-months ago; go to Sweden! This site is an excellent source for electric power and after converting Marias Pass to full electrification ("Sweden 1") and editing much of the scenery in RE, the line now runs heavy ore trains hauled by LittDM electrics instead of mixed freights headed by Dash-nines.I can recommend a visit........

While we're at it, I can also recommend a visit to http://mikemad.de/msts.htm . Mike just released a very nice heavy twin-section electric freight engine known as "IORE" which is used on the Swedish iron ore lines in real life. Just to give you an idea of the sheer power of this one, it has almost 14,700 hp and 1,200 kN tractive effort .

Thank you very much for that information and link.
I knew that the Swedes used some pretty impressive machinery but that's certainly "wow!" material! Incidentally, I love the job that "Mad Mike" has done on the Milwaukee Bi-polar: very nice indeed.Bruce.

Is anyone working on Great Northern and Milwaukee Road electrics? The Milwaukee bipoar is a great locomotive, but it needs some company.

RE: a treat for lovers of electric freight locos

Hi LocoRono, haven't seen that download yet. But I get a chance to ride the prototype regularily, and love it every time. To the folks not familiar to this set: These consists, commonly also referred to as ICN, are made up of 7 cars and are normally coupled in pairs to make a 14-car InterCity train. They run hourly on one of the two main East/West corridors of the federal railways of Switzerland (the so-called Jura-base route from St.Gallen via Zurich - Neuchatel - Lausanne to Geneva). The prototype is equiped with a tilting mechanism that makes the train "lean into curves", thus allowing for higher speed even on lines with many turns. Simulating prototypical speed restrictions for this type of train, I guess it would run an electrified MP31 from Shelby to Whitefish in something like 90 minutes, still without loosing out on "passenger" comfort. Ken, if you go to the site, do as follows:On left menu, click "english" for language. On left mmenu in next screen, click "electric engines" in the Download Categories.Next screen, center menu, click "Switzerland" under country.A page of engines will appear. Click for page "2".On page 2, scroll down until you find the locomotives "BLS Ae 8/8" and "BLS Ae 4/4". I believe those are the correct engines as shown in the post.Hope this helps.
