RE: New To Train Simulator..........

well if it is the choice of locomotives, or the lack of routes, then all you need to do is check out the file library here. There are thousands of great add-ons that can be downloaded and installed fairly easy, and all for free. I agree that if not for all the free add-ons here, I probally would have dumped the sime long ago. Plus, there are payware routes as well for Cajon pass, Kicking Horse pass, and Sandpatch, just to name a few.If it is the overall feel for the game that you are not crazy about, then I don't know what to tell you. But check out the file section here at train-sim.com, and maybe you'll change your mind. You have to re-register for the files section though, as it does not use the same one here. Good Luck, and enjoy

RE: New To Train Simulator..........

Let me say.......... I know about the large collection of add-ons, i have been a MS Flight Simulator junkie for awhile now, i guess i'm frustrated on how to properly stop and drive the trains i guess and the intro drive is wayyyy to basic for my tastes. Does anyone use a joystick for train sim? If so how do you have the keys and throttle configured?

RE: New To Train Simulator..........

Answer to your question, MSTS does not support the use of the joystick. As for the keyboard, you'll just have to memorize the controls. There is RailDriver avaliable at www.Raildriver.com It is an excellent tool for driving the trains. I recommended for anyone who's into driving trains. It works like the real thing.

Well train simming isn't for everyone. As for the Intro ride... Don't go by that! the stupid AI don't how to run a train. I'm sure you've figured how to move the train, Now you have to learn to do it Prototypical, I also own Flight Sim 2002 pro, But for me, Getting 87 loaded grain over Kicking Horse Pass, In the snow with 3 Ac4400's at 11Mph all the way is more rewarding then Taken a 747 off at LAX. To each his own.

Untill I got the RailDriver I used Logitech Wingman 3D joystick, and it works perfectly together with MSTS because you can programme all buttons and movements with the included software. And unfortunately I must say that the throttle function were much more precise than in RailDriver.Jan

RE: New To Train Simulator..........

i was frustrated early on too, only becasue I wasn't looking at the sheet right. If you are in simple control mode, than D is go, and A is stop. Just continue preeing both buttons untill you are running full throttle, or untill you stop. With simple controls turned off, you then still use D to go, but use the ', ; , ], < buttons to control braking. Your A button controls the dynamic braking.[P>perhaps this is what is frustrating you, I don't know. But I enjoy it very much, as do others, and find the stopping and starting to be pretty realistic once you get the hang of it. you havn't had it very long, so if you are already drwaing conclusions, then maybe you need TRAINZ.

RE: New To Train Simulator..........

Being on "Old" hand at Train Simming in more than one sense of the word, I am embarassed to ask the question:What is Dynamic Braking ? Is it what trams in Vienna do when retarding the Trottle past ZERO, the electric motors then assuming some sort of "Braking" function, which is more "Brake Shoes" or "Brake Linings" friendly ? I now use the RAILDRIVER as well as their programmed by me X-KEYS and have been wondering what the Raildriver's "Dynamic Brake" part of the Throttle Lever does.My favourite, my special Diesel-Electric Santa Fe Explorer, has a Combined Throttle/Brake handle responding to D and A only. The D part of it is now working with the Raildriver Throttle since the last Update for the Raildriver, but Braking can only be done with my X-Keys or Keyboard's D key.Don't want to change the PowerCar.eng file for my Explorer as suggested, it's parameters having been modified by me.O t t o

RE: New To Train Simulator..........

What happens is that the traction motors are turned into generators. The energy to slow the train down is converted to energy and then released as heat is resistor grids or if possible on electric lines the power is feed back into the system.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: New To Train Simulator..........

Zebe, having been a Railway and Railway Model Layouts Fan since the age of 5, 69 years ago, the event of MSTS has totally eradicated any further desire of mine to play with my Model Railway layouts, which have neither the selection of Rolling Stock and Scenery MSTS has nor the vast choice of Routes available, including creating your own or modifying existing ones with the ROUTE EDITOR.To create a Replica Model Railway Layout of all the MSTS Routes I have installed I would need the best part of the U.K.! You can also not sit inside a Model Railway Loco Cab and drive it almost like in Reality with the "RAILDRIVER" from www.raildriver.com ! O.K. there are Model Railway Locos with minute VIDEO cameras in the front, but they only show you Model Railway Tracks and Scenery, not Simulations of almost real Tracks and Scenery !As with Cars and a Planes, you got to learn the "HOW TO" first.I am a real Pilot which helps flying in the FS2002 and driving Model Railway Trains gets you started driving MSTS Locos, but is of little use driving Steam or Diesel Locos with their many Controls ! Be warned, you will get "Hooked" the same as the rest of us ! O t t o

RE: New To Train Simulator..........

Several years ago the N&W 611 was in Chicago for a railfan trip. It was sitting at the 40th Street CNW passenger yard. I was a guest who had been invited to ride the foot plate in the cab on that trip. One other guest, a retired American Airline 747 Captain, joined us. When we returned to Chicago the Captain said that he had always thought that he had attained the highest reward flying the 747 until he had the opportunity to make that cab ride. He couldn't believe that two men could take a steel machine, coal, water, fire and steam...control all those elements and make it go 80MPH! It was the thrill of his life and I saw him on many occassions when a steam locomotive was in the Chicago area. There are a number of excellent threads dealing with locomotive operations...just search for them and don't give up! You are comparing apples with oranges. Have fun!
