Can someone give detailed instructions on how to add a loco or piece of rolling stock as a scenery object, one that is able to be placed in RE? I believe it has something to do with editing the route's REF file, but I've messed up too many REF files already ! Thank you!

Adding Locos as Scenery Objects – image 2

Basically, it is simple although there is a possible problem. For each piece of rolling stock you want to copy as a static object, copy the shape files (.s and .sd) into your <route>\shapes directory. Copy the texture file(s) (.ace) into your <route>\textures directory. Now, edit the reference file with a Unicode capable editor such as Wordpad and add an entry for the object you are copying. If you have not done this before, each entry contains about six lines. It will look something like this:

Static (
Class ( Rolling_Stock )
Filename ( wrkdpa.s )
Align ( None )
Description ( Wrecked PA Loco )
)
All the parentheses are required including the one by itself on the last line. The class is the category under which the object will be found in the Route Editor Object Locator window. Filename is the (.s) shape filename. Align is normally "None". Description is what you want displayed in the object locator window. Once you have added your entry(s) in the .ref file, save it in Unicode format. You are now ready to use the object.I said there is a possible problem. I recently converted a bunch of derelict boxcars to static objects. These were all modeled by the same individual and he used the same texture filename for all of them. Unfortunately, they are all different. This is ok for trainset files because each texture file is in a different folder. However, if you copy several texture files into the route texture folder, each one added will overwrite the previous one and all your static cars will look the same. If you encounter this, you need to rename the texture file and then edit the .s file to reflect the new texture file name. I have included a lot of detail here. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

RE: Adding Locos as Scenery Objects

Hi Cal, I've used the method you've descibed, in the past, to add cars and trucks to the various routes. My question is, how do you ensure that a specific piece of rollingstock goes to a specific track,or is this something that would occur randomly?. The reason I ask is that most of the trainsimming I do is centered around shortlines. For some, I'd like to do a series of "class portraits", having found a yard with an amazing amount of track and free space with which to work. I guess it would be just as easy to use the activity editor, but if there are alternatives, then I'd like to give 'em a try.

Mike Go to any engine or rolling stock folder and copy the "s and sd" files to the shape folder in the route you want to install the static item. Then go to the same engine or rolling stock file and copy all the "ace" files to the textures file in the same route..
Make sure you copy and paste NOT MOVE...Then open the REF file in the same route folder and add this statementStatic (
Filename ( gp30sp.s )
Class ( "Trains" )
Align ( None )
Description ( SP_GP30 )
)Where the file name is the same as the "s" file you copied and pasted. Hope this helps...
PS do not mess with the ENG or WAG files...

RE: Adding Locos as Scenery Objects

OK, thanks guys, I got it to work. I put a GP38 on a route so now I'm happy (for now). Thanks for the help! I suppose whole trains can't be placed as scenery objects? O well, project for another day, I suppose.
Thanks again!
-Mike

I'd like to do this, but the &#!/&#$£:n tile size dilemma prevents that . I also created satic trains with ~10 cars as one object and I have succesfully placed a couple of those. Of course the tile size problem prevented me to fill some large yards.
