Train simmers using Norton Personal Firewall 2002 like I do may have been frustrated by the inability to register to use the Train-Sim.com discussion forums. It took me a couple days of experimenting, but I finally discovered how to access the forums without totally disabling the firewall.Bring up Personal Firewall, and access the Privacy Control window.
Click on Custom Level...
Uncheck the box Enable Browser Privacy
Click OKThat's it! You're in like, well, like me! And when you're done on the discussion forums, you can go back and turn Enable Browser Privacy back on. You do not have to disable the firewall as mentioned in the MSTS FAQ. Like Capt. Kirk, you don't want to be caught with your shields down.

One more bit of good news: Disabling Browser Privacy is only necessary when you initially register for the forums. Once registered, I've discovered I can freely read and post with Browser Privacy reactivated.

You will need to disable it if you upload pictures. You can upload routes and objects without disabling Norton Firewall.SRV Ron

RE: Accessing Forums with Norton Personal Firewall 2002

What is the point of using a FIREWALL accessing a Forum like this one which itself is unlikely to send any NASTIES to your machine, although NELS or one of the Moderators could be tempted to do so occasionally ? I thought their Main Purpose was to stop Nasties when receiving E-Mail or being ONLINE for long periods, advertising the machine's presence on the web ? Apart from getting infected accessing some sites I do not want to be specific about ! Firewalls were unable to stop the latest Worm at HP-UK, a friend of mine employed by the former told me yesterday. It also de-activated scores of ATM machines in the States and is reported to be one of the worst to date. HP Staff spent most ot the day repairing the damage. Now if HP can not protect itself, who can ?O t t o

When you access the forums you are online. I use Zone Alarm Pro and it only gets disabled when absolutely necessary. Fortuantely my ISP - BT - filters out 99% of the virii before they even get to me in an email.Bill

BT is also my ISP, Bill, alas not Broadband where I live. But as ISPs allocate a different Internet Address every time you connect to the Web via one, the chances of anybody finding it, even accidentally, are remote ?O t t o.P.S.: Looks like you too remember a bit of your Latin Grammar from your School days ? "Amo te" is all I can remember !

With Broadband, as it is a permanent connection, you get a fixed ISP I believe.Yes I do remember my Latin and still read a bit of Latin prose every now and again but do have to reach for the dictionary more often as the years go by.Bill

RE: Accessing Forums with Norton Personal Firewall 2002

I've been using Norton 2002 for over a year now, with no problems. It can be tricky at times registering on forums etc,as you need to drop it briefly,or modify your firewall to be "cookied".Then free access is granted for subsequent visits. As for virus infections, and other attacks,I've been lucky so far,but at times my alerter for attempted "attacks" triggers on an almost daily basis, sometimes hourly or more.Worst on Fridays,Saturdays, etc once the Zoo's empty. In order for the web to work, your machine has to advertise its presence,so that it can communicate, but it also must be able to recognise a threat to its wellbeing, thus the firewall.Norton virus updates also occur on a weekly, sometimes more frequent basis, and there are a liot of viruses out there!.I once had a look at Nortons virus definition table, and was going to "print" it for reference, until I found there were over 35,000!

Sorry it took so long to reply, but I was away from home for a while.I'm in SE Michigan, not far from Detroit. My grandmother grew up in a farmhouse SW of Belleville, Michigan, and had the Wabash line practically in her front yard.Much of the footage contained in the Wabash Railroad video by Green Frog Productions is from my area.

RE: Accessing Forums with Norton Personal Firewall 2002

A few points. My broadband system also changes addresses now and again. Zonealarm pro causes endless problems with broadband networking, to the point I have uninstalled it. Nortons personal firewall is no better than the XP default one, which you have to uninstall to let Nortons work. On the other hand Norton products work very well.David

RE: Accessing Forums with Norton Personal Firewall 2002

Hi Mike,Without knowing which device you are using, I expect it is providing NAT (Network Address Translation) functionality. It is the NAT that is protecting you.I have a SnapGear Pro firewall appliance (embedded linux) protecting me. This device provides NAT as well. I have a mail and web server to protect 24/7.Derek
