Someone in an earlier thread mentioned that there will be many Newbies here after Christmas and that the members should make their usual heroic efforts to help and be patient with what may seem like unimportant questions. Many of the questions asked will be on the minds of more than one visitor. It would help everyone, both new members and old, if a final post would be made by the person asking for assistance when the problem is resolved.First, it is courteous to thank those who have tried to help. However, it is possibly even more important to let the members who have tried to help and others with the same question know what worked!I have noticed that too often a thread just seems to run out of steam with a long list of suggested solutions or answers without a response from the original person asking the question.NOTE: This does not apply to every one! It is simply my observation and how I feel about things. If you agree or disagree feel free to jump in with your two cents worth. Rick

I agree with what you said. It is fustrating to respond to a person post and if it doesfix their problem and they do not let you know if it worked or they found out that there was a different fix. If he/she posts with a different problem they might not get the help they require.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: Helping New MSTS Owners ! ! ! !

I second that. I've had MSTS for a year. It would not have been as enjoyable as it has without those persons, to whom many of us could turn to for advice. I, for one have made it a practise to respond to each and every reply recieved . Not for fear of any help next time, but as a courtesy to those who took the time to reply in the first place. If the thread runs for more than a few then I always try to summarize as the current issue is resolved. It is the very least anyone can and should do for those otherwise uncompensated. The list of those here that I wish I could return the favour to, is a long one. With time ,comes experience. Perhaps then.

Another suggestion would be to let me know about especially good answers to common questions, so I can include them in the site's FAQ where they will have a permanent presence.Or, if anyone would care to write up short articles on common concerns that could be included in the FAQ that would be great too.

I think one important thing for new folks ( hate the term newbie ) is that when they have a problem that they list their computer specs. Many times this can eally narrow down the problem. Of if they get an error to state what the error is and what they were trying to do.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: Helping New MSTS Owners

Just another thing to add. If you download a good activity, email the person concerned and thank them. If it is outstanding, post the fact on here. If you don't like it, say nothing.I am busy doing activities at the moment, but they are probably of minority interest, as they need: Carlisle Settle 1930, 3DTS UK branch collection, Activity changer (possibly). In fact I don't even know if they will run on anyone elses machine, as they all are about 63kbs each. It seems you can create very small space activities with activity changer. I have just finished a new one on the NEC, using all 50s diesel consists, but that requires all the TA stuff, including the new freebies to members.David

RE: Helping New MSTS Owners ! ! ! !

Hi All,I am glad to hear that many of you feel the same as I do. I have only been here for a few months and I was afraid that I might be over stepping my bounds bringing this up.I too have tried to make it a point to respond either individually or to groups of responders to my questions. Thinking back I may have even left some people hanging by not posting information about what fixed my problem or answered my question. There is a fantastic group of people here, male/female, young/old, experienced/inexperienced, model railroaders and 12" to the foot railroaders, etc. The amount of knowledge and experience available to be brought to bear on a question or problem is awsome. More importantly, That knowledge is shared generously and freely. That knowledge grows with each problem solved when the solution is reported back to the group. Thanks to each of you for all that you have done for me and I hope that I will be able to return the favor tenfold as my skill, experience and knowledge increase also!Rick

RE: Helping New MSTS Owners ! ! ! !

I've had MSTS for some time, but did become frustrated with some aspects of it and have dusted it off again to take another shot at using it, so in some sence of the work I'm also a new MSTS owner as well. One thing that I've have yet to figure out and that is I've downloaded some additional routes, copied them to the routes folder in MSTS, and have yet been able to use the routes. The routes are not listed in the list along with the standard MSTS routes such as Marias Pass, etc.I'd appreciate anyones assistance.

RE: Helping New MSTS Owners ! ! ! !

Hi Gary,Merry Christmas!I have had this same trouble and most often it was because I did not follow the route creators installation instructions to the letter.I would suggest that you look at that very carefully first and then, as kevarc said, please give us a complete rundown of what you did so we have more information to work with.Rick
