LAST EDITED ON Dec-23-02 AT 04:57 PM (EST)

I am wanting to cut back on some sounds in the default routes. Say I want to get rid of the nature sounds and yard sounds. I know I have to delete or move the wav file but what else do I need to do? I think I need to edit the sms files per route. I have looked in these sms files and really all I see is mp joint or ect. Nothing to do with nature or yard. Also I want to get rid of the sounds for going over bridges in cab and outside of cab. I can not find anywhere in an sms file anything for high_rail or low_rail sounds. If I could get my sounds set up like they are for KHP I would be thrilled. I see only a few things in the sound folder for the KHP and many many for Marias Pass, MP3 and MP3.1. I can fill a sound by moving the wav file from the sound folder. I get no errors when doing this but I am thinking there is some editing to do somewhere so it is done the right way.
Any help on this subject would be very helpfull.
Thanks.

RE: This is for all the sound-wizards out there.

Hi,Tough it is not quite clear to me what you want, here are some hints. There are two types of sound:
The rail sounds or tracktype sounds (tt)
The sound sources (ss)The rail sound files are listed in the ttype.dat in the root of the Route.
The sms and wav that are listed here can be found in the general Sound folder of MSTS.
The sound sources are listed in the ssource.dat in the root of the Route.
The sms and wav that are listed here can mostly be found in the Sound folder of the Route, but the general Sound folder is still possible.
And when you edit any sms file, be carefull to keep the right number of brackets and make backups of the files.Dick van den HovenThis is for all the sound-wizards out there – image 2

RE: This is for all the sound-wizards out there.

Thank you Dick. This is just what I was after. I just needed a break- down of how the sound files fit together. What I am after here is a solution to a sound problem I have with all the default routes. Ever since I got this new computer I have sound distortion at the same spots on each of the default routes. I have posted on this in here before and got lots of ideas and help. The one thing that really helped was to change sound acceleration from full to basic. I still get the popping sound but it doesn't make other sounds like the sander to not loop right. But with basic acceleration I am missing out on some real nice surround sound sounds. For some reason it is only the default routes that do this. My KHP, FBL2 and CTSR have no sound problems at all. So I thought one of 2 things. Maybe disc 1 of MSTS has a problem on the surface or too many sounds are trying to play at once. I did a reinstall of the whole sim and it did not help. At this point I am thinking of buying another copy of the sim in hopes it is a disc surface problem on disc 1. Then again it could be the creative sound card and I just haven't found the right driver yet. Anyone have a driver # that works for them?
Thanks again. I will do some digging in the sounds and see what I turn up.

RE: This is for all the sound-wizards out there.

Hi,That you don't hear the rural sounds is caused by the way the sms files are set up and your sound setting to basic.
When you look in the sms files for rural sounds, you will see that many only contains the Scalability group (SG) 3. That is the slider for the sound set to the middle, SG 5 is the highest and SG 1 is the lowest. You can play a little bit and change some sms files by changing the Scalability Group to 1. When it doesn't give the effect you like, you can change it back.Dick van den HovenThis is for all the sound-wizards out there – image 3

Again Dick, Thanks for the help on this. I looked in the USA2 sound folder. There are a few rural sms files. Do I edit the SG group in all the rural sms files?

Hi,After backing up the original files, you can do that. Otherwise, it is hard to test it. When you edit some files, you need to know where these files are used.Dick van den HovenThis is for all the sound-wizards out there – image 4

RE: This is for all the sound-wizards out there.

I can't thank you enough Dick. After rereading your first post I think I found what I was looking for. In the ttype.dat I compared the USA2 with KHP. KHP only has the default sound for the track and USA2 has many. I have a few ideas to try. After seeing what was in the USA ttype with all the sounds I hope by cutting back on a few that my sound issues will be over.
Thank You again and have a Merry Christmas!!!

RE: This is for all the sound-wizards out there.

Hi,I don't what SoundCard you have. I have a SoundBlaster Live! Value, that came with my Dell some months ago. The installed drivers seem to be old. I found much newer drivers at the Creative Website.
Today I had that plopping sound too and some freezers with the sound still looping. After installing the new drivers, MSTS seems to run fine. I will find out in the next days if the new drivers are really helpfull.Dick van den HovenThis is for all the sound-wizards out there – image 5

RE: This is for all the sound-wizards out there.

I would be greatfull for that. I will keep checking in to see what ya found. I tried something I thought would work but it locked up the sim and crashed. I went to the ttype.bat in the USA2 sound folder and deleted everything but the default line and changed the # of sounds from 10 to 1. This got rid of all the bridge, tunnel and snowshed sounds. Started the sim, selected Marias and after a minute in the sim she locked up. Took a bit to exit out. I have put the original ttype.dat file back in so all is well again. Is there anything linked to the ttype.dat that is calling for the sounds I deleted?
nscalerBTW on those drivers, I tried the "Value" ones and when I ran the dignostics it failed on a few things. This has been a while ago. Maybe know they have fixed it. I have the drivers for just the Soundblaster Live and all diagnostic tests pass. I do think Creative needs to address this and get a better driver out for there customers.

RE: This is for all the sound-wizards out there.

To simply remove the environment sounds from a route delete (or move into a temp folder) the .ws files in the routes World folder.
