First Take: Dogskill County RR – image 2

For those sitting on the fence wondering whether to download and install this new route, here are my first impressions having done so.I had no trouble whatsoever with installation. It's the standard "unzip into the ROUTES folder, then run the batch file" type of install. I encountered no missing files or other gotchas... after generating the terrain buffers, the route ran perfectly the first time. The route comes with several activities of the "tour" variety, all of them using default rolling stock. So far I have run two of them and encountered no problems. If you like PO&N, and you like Full Bucket, you'll like this. It is like PO&N in terms of breathtaking vistas, some of them almost photorealistic... high bridges over deep canyons, places where you're almost scared to look down... that sort of thing. All of it gorgeous. It also has a bit of "frontier" feel to it, sort of like Full Bucket. But the cities and towns are a little more developed; it's not out in the desert. If your thrill is running TGV trains at 300mph, this is not your route. In terms of twists and turns, it's like the Cumbres and Toltec, where you either pay attention, or you will die. And even though the speed limit is 35, you look at that curve up ahead and you think, "I'd better take that one at 25."This is one of those routes with people in it. Not a whole bunch, but enough to flavor it. There are folks on the station platforms, guys working alongside the tracks, that sort of thing. There are also touches of whimsy... I think I saw a flying saucer. Maybe two. This is a route that activity designers can have some fun with. I've included some screenshots below of two of the more complex yard areas, one at Coldbud (which I guess is what you get after finishing your activity) and another at that hard-to-understand German word, "Kohlmein." There are a couple of places where this route could use a wye, and it isn't there. It is possible to create trips where "you can't get there from here."Overall, I think this one is a definite "keeper." Some screenshots:

RE: First Take: Dogskill County RR

Hi.First: thanks a lot for your kind post! I'm kind of proud that Dogskill County's seems to hit most peoples taste. This one's quite right:>This is a route that activity designers can have some fun
>with. That's what I designed the route for. Lots of places to load or unload. Three different RR-Companies to serve: DCRR, FobbMan Lumber Co. and Henrietta Mining Co. Repainting rolling stock for all of it is in progress. Will be delivered from time to time with upcoming activity-packs. First act.-pack (english version) using only default rolling stock will arrive as soon as possible at download - area.>I've included some screenshots below of two of the
>more complex yard areas, one at Coldbud (which I guess is
>what you get after finishing your activity) and another at
>that hard-to-understand German word, "Kohlmein." To lighten it up: Kohlmein is pronounced like the english "Coal Mine". But as it is (in german) some kind of (let's say:) "joke with a word", translated it could mean something like "my gabbage".>There are a couple of places where this route could use a wye, What's a wye please? Sorry my english is not SO good (and dictionary out of reach)..>and it isn't there. It is possible to create trips where "you can't
>get there from here." Could you give me a short explanation what you mean? Sometimes posts here are hard to understand. A bit away from what you learned at school (and forgot too soon)...Once again: thanx for your post(s) all of you!!Woelferl

What's a wye?A place to turn the locomotive around. The name comes from letter "Y". One would be very useful at Coldbud (come from Hoddogg, turn loco around at wye in Coldbud, run around to other end of train, then on to Sillycone Dale.) Also at Nothing Gulch (from Silllycone Dale, turn at Nothing Gulch, on to Bulletproof). Thanks for the great route!

RE: First Take: Dogskill County RR

AHHH!That's a wye! Never thought seriously on builing something like that. (Although beta-tester Duke asked for one a couple of weeks ago) We don't have them (I think so) here in GER. A REAL funct. turntable would be something...Maybe I'll add a wye for Coldbud in V. 2. Shure I will ad some wye's in forthcoming yards. But: no chance for doing that in Nothing Gulch Junction. Not enough room for it in between the mountains. But lucky we are: the engine's have all a reverse handle ) !Woelferl

Looks like a great route, and I see a couple of my buildings in there as well so I definitely will check it out. Always like to see how folks use my creations.First Take: Dogskill County RR – image 9

RE: First Take: Dogskill County RR

Hallo Woelferl,
schaut ja wirklich gut aus, werd ich mir runterladen!
As for wyes: we have them in Germany (Gleisdreieck), but we don't need them any more since our diesels are double-headed. Back in steam times they were used frequently, but often they aren't very obvious, and you have to look at the track layout carefully to recognize themWerner
