Hello! If you follow the installation instructions which come with the program, you will almost certainly not be required to use the CD when you subsequently "play" MSTS.

Did you just buy MSTS? And did you get Revision 1.2?We had a previous thread on this, and it sounded like Microsoft added a little "feature" to 1.2 that makes it want to see the CD before it runs. The original version did not do this.My solution to all these programs that do this is something called Virtual Drive, which I found at Costco for twenty bucks. It copies a CD onto your hard drive, and then acts like a CD-ROM drive. So the program thinks the CD is there. So far this has worked with all the games I have that do this, plus Encarta and Streets&Trips.

RE: MSTS hard drive installation.

Neither does my 1.2....
Only the Warez verions did since they were originally based on a "leaked" beta....
However if you don't have all the routes installed on your hard drive it may, I repeat may, force you to insert the CD if you try to access that route...To force MSTS to install all Routes on your hard drive (takes about 1.7 to 1.8gig) do NOT take the express or default installation but take the custom option and select all the routes or possibly the option is called completely install MSTS????? I'm not sure but its there....Hope this helps...Chuck Schneider

RE: MSTS hard drive installation.

Here is some food for thought guys. I just upgraded my PC to Windows XP. Since the upgrade, it asks for the CD when I start MSTS. It didn't do that before I upgraded. I ran 98SE then ME before upgrading to XP.
The funny thing is the dialog that comes up when it asks for the CD has OK, cancel, and Continue. You can click continue and it starts up without the CD! Me thinks MS is trying to be a pain in the a..!

RE: MSTS hard drive installation.

Hmmmm,I think your refering to something entirely different, which is an XP issue not an MSTS issue. I don't know if others have this same problem with XP but my installation insists that there be a disk (any disk) installed in all removable disk drives (except the floppy disk drive) or it constantly whines about there not being a disk in drive ___. Oh, and MS doesn't see this as an issue, it's a user firendly "feature'. And it can't be a blank disk otherwise all this user friendly crap keeps asking what you want to do with it. God, I'm sick of user friendly "features". I've heard there is something in the registry that can turn this "feature" off but I've yet to locate it.

RE: MSTS hard drive installation.

I have Windows XP home edition and Windows 98se on my two machines, neither system requires that there be disks in my CD-ROM drives, and neither requires MSTS to have a CD in the drive. My MSTS disks have never been out of their folder since I got them except to do a reinstall on a new hard-drive.Looks like you might have something wrong with your XP setup or a faulty CD-Rom drive if it keeps asking for disks in the CD drives.

I can also send you to a site where you can read how CD's and DVD's are mastered as well, and learn about the mastering process. It seems simple but it is not.

RE: MSTS hard drive installation.

Update on my installation ...My computer is a Windows98 machine. I was installing a new
MSTS program (Version 1.2) onto my partition Drive H. After
repeated tries to install the complete MSTS I have come to the
conclusion that their new CD's are probably copy protected.
They have an unusual format so that I cannot even make an
archival copy onto another CD. I can copy the software installation
files to another drive and install off of it, but I still have
to have the original CD to run the program. I down loaded a virtual CD drive program that makes an image of the CD but it had trouble with it. It may take that software as long as 16 hours to make the image because it considers the MSTS disk as a special copy protected disk.If I am correct in the belief that the new CDs require the original
installation disk to play, then we have a very bleak future. I can
envision sitting at my computer five years from now with a stack
of CD's on my desk and every program I want to run, I have to stick
in another CD in the drive.

I used to work in a CD Duplication plant so I can answer this one. There is code in the CD itself that we (the duplicator) insert to prevent copying. It's done during the mastering process before we stamp the discs, and tested. If it passes, then we start mass duplication of whatever. Usually on a CD-ROM or DVD duplication sheet, there is an option to check off whether or not you want copy protection on the discs and for DVD what region you want the DVD to play in. If you try copying it to another CD it will fail. It's to prevent piracy and sh*t like that. People need to make their bones don't they? Therefore the CD can be read from by a CD or DVD-ROM drive but can't be copied. It's like hooking your DVD player to your VCR in the hopes on taping a DVD. That won't work because the DVD player will think you're trying to copy the DVD which is correct so it'll scramble the signal up or cause the picture to fade in and out repeatedly. There is a way around the copy protection but it's kinda technical and I know how to get around it, but unfortunately I'm not telling anyone on how to do it. Some software programs do it, but the result to copy copywrighted CD's can range from near sucessful to impossible. As for the CD's in the drive well, you might have to get used to it. As for the software taking 16 hours to make an "image" of the CD, that's if it's sucessful in doing so.

RE: MSTS hard drive installation.

Thank you Rob. I believe you are quite correct. I was able to
make the image. I did it on a fater PC. It took about 40
minutes. I could access all the programs on the image CD, but
it was not a substitute for the original. I could not run the
program without inserting the original CD. I am not optomistic
about my CD lasting very long. They can get damaged easily.
I do feel cheated. Fortuantely, I did not pay very much for
the product. I will refrain from purchasing other game products by
Microsoft. The hackers will continue beating the system, and
Microsoft will be the looser.

RE: MSTS hard drive installation.

I don't know! Something about all this has My Bull $hit detector strobing...... I have installed MSTS (v 1.0)many times on my machine and a new copy of version 1.2 on my Grandson's machine.... I run Windows/XP-Home and he runs Windows/ME.... I have never - ever run into this copy protection program business ( IIRC it may have been in Beta 1 but was deleted by MS over heated discussion on the beta boards based on very bad experiences most testers had had with the copy protection - user prevention scheme in MSTS 2000... But I am not 100% sure as that happened prior to me becoming a tester ).... I have duplicated both my grandson's and my CD and in fact just duplicated mine again as a test.... It took well under 1/2 hour using "Clone CD".... I put my original back in its envelope and installed OK from the copy....

RE: MSTS hard drive installation.

No Chuck. I am whom I say I am. I am completely convinced
that my MSTS CDs are copy protected CDs. I installed the
software on my wife's new XP machine. Same problem: could
not make archival copies, could not play the program without
inserting the original installation CD. I used the default
installation choices.I have an e-mail query into Microsoft. Hopefully they will
reply. If they do I will consider posting it here. I think
the situation is this. We all have the same version 1.2;
however my software was put on copy protected disks. I bought
the software at Staples. They had a special Christmas sale on
them. I only paid $29.95 instead of the usual $39.95 +
shipping. These CD's are part of a Christmas time distribution.
Perhaps Microsoft was just getting rid of a bunch of copy
protected CD's and sold them at discount to Staples? or
perhaps this is the way they are going to be from now on. I will give Microsoft a little while to respond. Then I will
pursue this further. I am very annoyed at being stuck with
these cd's. I have always been a big supporter of Microsoft.---------To everyone on these message boards and to the people at

RE: MSTS hard drive installation.

OK lets see what MS has to say! It is possible that whatever "loser" in their management "team" came up with the FS2000 copy protection scheme, which is what this sounds like, has been recalled from Siberia... LOL!
On FS2000 all we did was to clone CD#1 and then use that as a "key" when playing the game so as to keep our orginals in pristine condition... People who didn't found themselves with scratched and unusable CDs in pretty short order... MS then had to replaced them because of Customer Relations problems over this whole thing.... We were told on the beta board that they were not going to do this again as the cost both to replace CDs and in Customer Good Will was significant enough that it got above the horizon on Management's radar screen....
Please Let us know what their reply is....Chuck Schneider

From my point of view, if a person has a legally purchased CD product ... respectfully, Whatever and Etc. ... then the obligation to insert the CD each time you use that product has come to be accepted as an imposition. Let’s put it this way: (If i may) When a product I’ve purchased runs without calling for the insertion of its own cd, I like it. That’s an important Plus!

One of the worst for me? Every time certain products run, upon reboot, your system (Win 98) needs reconfigured and does so. Whirring and Clicking. I'm sorry THAT should be “in the game.” That’s a minus! It used to be pretty good when the system seemed clever enough to call for the insertion of the spell checking diskette in drive B. But here’s what I’m writing here about. At Babbages, a few years ago, customers at shelves in the Ohio Valley Mall were talking about copy protection and A Big Time Computer Software Utility Company ... ABTCSUC (I think it was Noton’s when they were at a pre becoming stage with Symantec.)Being a registered user, yours truly was talking about getting a “new” (then) variant on one of their utilities ... probably Norton’s Utilities, I guess it is/was. (Depending on what the meaning of was was? Hello, Bill Cinton!!) Or ... Wye Not? Certain offshoots could be added then if you were a previously registered owner of the appropriate product. As time and circumstance acted like an ocean, I came to subscribe to the axiom of the Shelf Sage (evolved today into ... the role many fill here now) then next to me: “Copy Protection?” He said. “There’s always a way around it.”
Being friendly, that person advised as to how the user often finds his or her own way to get in. Like today ... only we do this exchange here, not at the shelves of the Best Local Software Store. (BLSS)Copy Protection is balky. Creative input demands it even as it necessarily defeats it.My own list of all the passwords asked for by looking it up in the manual ... page 12 of the instructions for example? Then enter some four letter or number key combination. You remember. That game in this house, was Xcom. After thousands of hours of use, I printed up a sheet on the Epson Dot Matrix Printer. . I didn’t distribute that crib sheet ... it was just easier to use by far. It became a little spreadsheet; that crib sheet from then.It is AE. (All Education!) Or the XTree and Xtree Gold approach. Their product was stunning. It was practical as water. They didn’t copy protect. Many shared. Most subsequently bought. It was worth it! Like Quake and like here ... no one could say the authors overcharged!See Xtree today in the Windows Explorer. That was another approach: the evolution so fast there was and is no protection. XTree Gold. X Com. Explorer ... What did you say, Captain? Now in some instances people are called upon to insert their CD when, using the same materials, others are not. This is temporary and might be fixed here by some! I wouldn’t be at all surprised if MS issued free replacements or posted a download patch where this could be by passed.Even a toll free phone call to the company might yield up a password which disables the copy protection on that particular version of this wonderful “game.”Clearly Believing in Dreams Respectfully SubmittedjivajivaPS this is my edit: You know you're playing too much MSTS when you turn off the screen blanker before you load ...

When they can there is nothing like good Customer Relations! That code can't be bypassed unless you know what you are doing. See my post on CD replication. I know how to bypass the code but I'm not telling anyone on how to do it. I only do it for my personal use (very rarely I might add) and besides to circumvent something like that is illegal, but you might be able to look on the Internet for a crack so that the program does not ask for the CD to be inserted. As for a free replacement, that will be near impossible unless you convince them that the disk is screwed up which judging from this little thread it is not. The reason why it asks for the disk to be inserted is to authenticate it. I have a few games that will run off the hard drive but need the CD-ROM disk to authenticate it before I play it (any game that's made by Blizzard Entertainment contains a CD key so you can play it online and to prevent piracy) It's similar to you putting a DVD into a DVD player, the player will authenticate it and check to see if the region codes match or if the region code is listed on the DVD's Title of Contents. as for a phone call forget it. Unless you are having major problems they won't all ow you to disable it (although it is possible using regedit, but then you're putting your computer on the line and that would not be worth it, because if it fails, you can kiss your computer's files sionara.)My version is the original 1.0 version, which I've had to install twice. I do not need the CD to authenticate itPatches to circumvent authentication from Microsoft:
Forget that too. Unless they are ordered by a Court of Law to put a patch out forget it. The only reason patches are created is to fix Minor things. Remember I worked in a CD duplication plant, so I'm well versed on this sort of problem. If you need any more info on this, you'd better ask me and I'll give you my recommendations, but WILL NOT tell you how to circumvent the copy protection device. I stress that out.

Oh come on Rob! You can tell us! We won't tell anyone. (he-he-he-he).
Seriously, I realize there are a number of options that might be
available to get around the system. A number of people have suggested
some, and I appreciate that. What bothers me is that corporate
greed is indifferent to the the satisfaction of its paying customers.
If Microsoft had clearly indicated on the packaging that the disk
had a copy protection device inserted into it and that an archival
copy could not be made then I would have felt that I had been dealt
with fairly. They did not do that and I feel cheated. If they deal
with me fairly, then I would buy more of their products. Flight
Simulator for small planes looks interesting to me. But I certainly am
not going to buy any more of their products until I know that I am not
going to be deceived. Also, I will not knowingly buy a software
product that requires me to insert the CD every time I want to
run it.

As far as I know they do that on DVD's, but recently someone circumvented that and it went to trial and the courts ruled it was free speech to circumvent copy protection. Whether this has an effect on CD-ROM's too remains to be seen. Windows XP has an activation thing, so does Office XP and Office 2000 versions sold in Austraila. Some audio CD's made in the European Union have a function on them that renders the CD useless if you even play it in a computer. If I were to give advice on something like this i would say to look on the internet for a crack. I can't tell you legally how to circumvent the copy protection thing. I told my employer when I left them on good terms that I would not teach anyone how to circumvent the copy protection. Trust me working there was a blast, I got to listen to CD's before they came out and test drive the computer software and DVD's off the duplicator. I had to keep my trap shut about it thought, it was tempting but I didn't do it
I can feel your pain (take this from a guy with the Star Of hell and 666 on his right arm and he likes Trains and model Railroading, go figure), but they did that to prevent piracy. Like the saying goes, no 2 snowflakes are alike. Like in my earlier example, the games that are made by Blizzard Entertainment, such as Diablo II, WarCraft III and StarCraft, all require you to insert your CD-Key (which is on the case or inside the CD) during the installation. Once that's done it's copied onto your hard drive and if you play it online it checks the CD-Key to make sure it's not duplicated. This could be a feature you might have to live with and us all for the rest of our lives. Corporate Greed is rampant these days so I'm not surprised. I'd highly advise you not to tweak your Registry settings so you can circumvent this. It's not worth losing your computer. If you have anymore questions, leave me a message. Some CD's allow you to make one copy soley for archivial purposes, but people have done that and duplicated it for their friends. I've done that too.

Some of them work on some computers (tested this yesterday), but they may not work in DVD or car stereo or even on regular cd-player. Who can play those if cd-players disappear and DVD works like computer CD-ROM, which means you can't play the cd? I'm not sure, but I heard that DVD uses the cd's like computer drive.Anyway, I don't understand why the record companies are persecuting their customers. They should be thankful when/if someone buys their cd's, instead of punishing them. I will return those plastic discs (they are not real cd's, as they don't follow the standard) to the store after copying.

It has produced a generation of spoiled wastrels who think they are entitled to everything just cause their Mom's gave them everything and there were never any consequences for breaking rules...
(Oh I forgot you can get a "Time-Out" - LOL!) Something about punishment traumatizes the child. So now they grow up and traumatize society because they can't understand why real-life is different than Mom's house!Personally I think a lot of this drives the "Hate the USA" movement. In my experience the people most critical of us envy the society and material accomplishments of North America but don't want to make the investment in "Sweat Equity" (Hard Work)and Tolerance (and we really do try at this - even though at times we are not successful - think I'm wrong lets have an "open air mass in a park in Rijad" or better yet hold "shule" complete with Rabbi in the same place - now lets do it in down town DC - let me know how you make out) to achieve what we have.. My step-father got off the boat from Sweden as an infant and my German-Austrian-Alsatian Grandparents got off the boat as teenagers! The funny thing is they would all say basically the same thing when visiting family from the "Old Country" would say something critical about the US... "Last time we checked there was no mass migration FROM the US to the Old Country!")Let's call a Spade a Spade (in playing cards) shall we?

WHEN YOU COPY A CD AND DISTRIBUTE IT (to your friends) WITH OUT PERMISSION FROM THE PUBLISHER YOU ARE STEALING! NO IF ANDS OR BUTS ABOUT IT! IT IS NOT CORPORATE GREED BUT THEFT!If their weren't so many "thieves" around Copy Protection and/or activation wouldn't be necessary. That's the way it was in the very beginning as I recall. But the thieves ruined that in quick order! If you can't afford it you can't get it! End of story!
Find an alternative!
(Food is another story and the developing world donates a lot of it to the 3rd world - some 30% of the US-Canadian Grain Harvest in bad years! So don't try to justify software theft by the "Starving Kids in Slobovia" argument....)
And where is Piracy most rampant? Try the China, Russia and India in that order which each have about 100 legal copies of Windows/XP! (Exaggeration for effect but essentially true)...

I thik it more or less has to do with legal issues on how one defines theft for comptuer software. I will have to study your message a little more and respond to it after I finish wrapping gifts to put under da christmas tree.

RE: MSTS hard drive installation.

Theft has a legal definition period...
Its Black and white,
"Take something that doesn't belong to you and its theft!
If you didn't pay for it and you don't have a license(note: Freeware grants a license) then it doesn't belong to you and you stole it!
There is no ambiguity here!
Unless of course you are Billary!Based on your answer I rest my case on Dr. Spock, outcome based education, Billary and situational ethics!

RE: MSTS hard drive installation.

but there is no way of telling if it's legal or not. It is illegal to look into ones computer for bootlegged software without a warrant and if you have Kazaa, you can type in anything you want and it's on there. as long as you include all the legal rights and so forth it's still legal and no I'm not starting a holy war on this. Before i had Windows XP, I had Windows 98, 2000 and Me bootlegged, because in Canada it's legal to do if it's on the Internet. I also had all three 2 months before it was on the shelves too but refrained from installing them until the night before. I don't have the discs anymore because XP is more stable then the other 3.
I love the Billary thing.

RE: MSTS hard drive installation.

Sure there is a way to tell....
Ask you to produce a license!
If you don't have one (Bill of Sale or Freeware License)
It is a valid legal presumption that you stole it since you have no proof of ownership....They won't come looking into your hard drive with out a warrant! You give up a lot of information every time you "include" your system configuration on any electronic registration...
Remember some vendors will not allow you to download patches unless you are registered....
Then there is the old "annonymous sorce" who reports you for Kiddie Porn... Once they have your machine or access to it all bets are off... I don't think what you did was legal in Canada either since it was not Microsoft who posted "free" windows on the internet but some one else who was not a legal Microsoft agent (Can you say Warez)... I wonder where these silly ideas come from...
"If its on the 'net then its "allie allie in free" or something like that?" Or, If Hillary doesn't actually see Bill with Moanica then it didn't happen no matter what kind of dna or 3rd party testimony exists - gee I wish I could convince my wife of that )So based on your above statement you could be legitimately called a thief also...Chuck Schneider

RE: MSTS hard drive installation.

I'm starting to like this in a good way. It's now become a debate on what's legal or not. I'll admit they were not legal, but Warez sites do post alot in fact too much. I've used them only in dire cases and since I moved to (whatever state i'm in now) I never use them.now for the DNA thing wasn't well I can't use words like that can I? If Bill cheats on Hillary with Monica don't you think I'd see then on Springer one way or the other? You can never convince your spouse. I've tried that and my wife sometimes says I'm full of it.I'm off nighty nighty Children of the Corn. Going to watch The Sunday Night Sex Show on oxygen. I just don't like the disclaimer. it should read This show is about sexual health so shut up and like it. But then again that's beyond this scope

I know! Their a$$es are still on fire over the user community reaction to their user prevention tool/aka copy protection on FS2000.....
That is why I'd be surprised if they had implimented it on here....Chuck Schneider

MSTS hard drive installation – image 15

LAST EDITED ON Dec-21-02 AT 03:30 PM (EST)

I made copies of the cd's as the originals caused problems every time. CloneCD & Plextor did a great job (albeit slow on disc 2). Disc 1 may not have protection at all. And I don't need to put the cd to the drive when starting MSTS.
If any program needs it, I will definitely search a crack or some other way to stop that. I have better things to do that browsing my cd-box every time I start a program.

RE: MSTS hard drive installation.

Cloned CD, CD Anywhere, Virtual CD, and a number of other cloning
programs do not currently have the ability to make an archival
copy of the Christmas release of TS that I bought. They copy the
software, but are unable to copy the key that makes the program
think that the required original cd is in the drive. This is a
new device or else the above software would be able to do the job.As for Flight Simulator not requiring the CD to run the program...
Well, that is true of the older (pre-Christmas) CDs, as it is true
of MSTrain Simulator. The new CD's of TS however are protected and
it is quite possible the new Flight Simulator CD's are as well.

Do you mean that they have added that stupid cd-check? I bought my copy in the mid-2001 and it doesn't check the cd (it the euro-version).

This is true. I just got my copy of Train Sim, it's version 1.2 and it's copy protected with SafeDisc2 version 2.70 and there are no cracks out there yet. So get used to having the CD around!Warren

Thank you Warren. You have confirmed what I have been saying.
I thought I was the only person stuck with this thing. Shortly
there are going to be a lot more people protesting it. Thank
you.

XP-Pro and only the editor/tools goes looking for a CD, and then, in a random fashion. talking books are acceptable, continue also works to bypass the CD requirment.I live with it, Uncle Billy like "features" in his software.Happy Holidays,Bill

I like this, this is full bnlown out on whether you have to insert the CD into the drive.
i'm a little hungry right now, so I'll wath this thread more carefully.Get used to plunking your CD in unless you have MSTS 1.0. I know I do
And if I didn't I can bypass the Please insert Disc 1 into Drive F requirement

After a few days my XP just quit asking for it (and it was the editor only). I didn't do anything, but I'm sure it did, and now it doesn't.

RE: MSTS hard drive installation.

I'll probably have to call the duplicator since I know who stamped the discs, because I have worked for them. After the holidays or on Friday I should have an answer for you. It's easy to tell who manufactured the discs so I can tell you who stamped then and what happeend, but I know my version of TS does not have to be in the CD drive.CD's last a very long time, from teh first play to thte 1000th play without deterioration. Only reason I'm doing it this way is because i have 5 CD's to make of MP3's for someone plus I wanto to remix some songs that I downloaded.Rest assured I'll haev an answer and no I'm not giving the number of the duplicator out
