I have the Maple Leaf Tracks Kicking Horse Pass and the SandPatch addon. I just bought the Trains Sandpatch on location video friday. From the video and also the game why does CPR have the helper locos in the middle of the train? While on Sandpatch for CSX they just stick them on the back? Does it make a difference. It seems that on the back it would be easier to uncouple the locos on the fly.
Some runs with really long trains and steep grades put as many as 4 locos in the middle of the train and run them by radio .... it's called locotrol and the units are called DPU's (distributed power units).UP does it between Hinkle and Boise (there was an article in Trains magazine a few years back). In fact they run two lead locos, four in the middle and two trailing helpers. They not only help in tractive effort on the uphill ruling grade, but with dynamic braking coming down. It helps keep in-train forces under control ....fewer "break-in-two"s.
I've seen CSX split in mid-train helpers on Sandpatch on a couple of rare occasiions as well, but not very often. They usually just have two SD50's pushing from the rear, then cut them off at SA (Sandpatch).Chris Denbow - Baltimore, Md. CPL - http://cpl.railfan.net/
